“Good point. Another case of tunnel vision, with devastating consequences. After readiing Garrido's statements that were made after his prior arrest, I'm shocked he was ever paroled. He is one sick and scary dude.”

“I don't work in law enforcement, but I'd bet that an "Investigation 101" course would teach these simple questions to ask when someone is kidnapped in South Lake Tahoe:

1) Have there been any other kidnappings in the area? Where? When?

2) Were the crimes solved? If so, who were the perpetrators?

3) Are they currently in prison? If not, WHERE ARE THEY?

Garrido was on parole for his prior kidnapping and rape crime that occurred in SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, and his whereabouts should have been readily available to law enforcement. The screw-ups of the last three years are very disturbing, yet why wasn't this case solved right after it happened? The mind boggles.”

newtom replied on Aug 31, 2009 at 14:48:14

“The problem with your logical theory is that the authorities suspected Dugard's step-father, Probyn, from the moment the crime was reported until the day Garrido admitted being the perpetrator. They had their suspect and they worked hard to prove he was guilty -- ignoring all other leads and tips (of which there were several) that would have lead them to rescue Dugard. Meanwhile, they have ruined Probyn's life while this horror continued for more than 18 years.”

“From what I understand, the African-American community and the Cambridge police have been at odds for some time. Officer Crowley, while probably not a racist, could and should have done more to diffuse the situation, once he found out that Mr. Gates was in his own home. Mr. Gates had just flown in from China and was jet-lagged and likely more prone to becoming emotional. I think a person of his stature should have been treated better, especially given the history between the community and the police department.”

OldFreddie replied on Jul 24, 2009 at 00:54:54

“You undermine the entire argument that treatment by law enforcement should be fair and unbiased when you state that a "person of his stature should have been treated better". Well known people break the law, celebrities break the law, politicians break the law. Should they be given better treatment because of who they are?”

M1 replied on Jul 24, 2009 at 00:53:12

“All people should be treated the same regardless of stature.”

AllieMD replied on Jul 24, 2009 at 00:44:22

“'a person of his stature should have been treated better'

You're advocating that police officers should alter their behavior based on the perceived social stature of an individual they are investigating?????”

“Not just the african american community, the students too.I lived there 10 years and the cops are thugs to everyone.”

blindjester replied on Jul 24, 2009 at 00:40:59

“I agree with you.

I don't want anyone to smear a cop without knowing the facts-------his reaction may have had nothing to do with race; how would we know?------but he could have done better calming the guy down.

A black man isn't wrong to fear bigotry in a situation like that, and that would make his anger all the more intense. I can't blame him.”
