“To suggest that the "Willie Horton deal" wasn't racist is just plain silly. Are you old enough to recall the election of 1988? Lee Atwater, the author of the Horton ads admitted, prior to his death, that the ads played upon racial fears.
Sure Dukakis did grant the furlow program that did allow for temporary release of Horton, who then did not return after raping and stabbing a victim. The republican ad hit men saw this as the perfect vehicle to link Dukakis to white voters fears of Black offenders. And it worked.
Look it up.”

hp blogger Nelson Montana replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 11:43:37

“Gotta call B.S on that one. If Willie Horton were white, what difference would it have made. Dukakis granted furlows to violent criminals. How is that defensible?”

“What? Do you even recall the facts of Horton and the ad used. Clearly it had a racial component to it. Were you in grade school when the ad ran? Dukakis was responsible for the furlow program that allow for Horton release. But the attack ad was one designed to generate fear based on racial bigotry, and it worked.

Agreed some dudes..... but let's not rewrite history to give the attack ad merchants a walk.”

The Constitution allows for bond in cases (except treason and capital murder) because one is accused and not assumed guilty, as O'Reilly does. Bond is an instrument to assure one's appearance at trial, not a means of keeping one accused of a crime in jail. A 150K bond does not seem excessively low.

O'Reilly has a history of mistakenly asserting facts overly low so that his arguments appear more reasonable.

I am not one to make judgments on Huckabee”

“Have you considered that she may have quit the race because she knew she was not physically fit enough to run three miles. I believe that she has a much weaker constitution than her crazy fans think. She quit the governorship because it helped her avoid the hard work and ethics issues and gave her an easy opportunity to earn mega bucks with a book that was ghost written for her. I doubt that she has kept any real exercise routine. Why let that image of her as a runner be damaged by a very poor showing in a 5 K (easy) race?”

I would bet'cha that any and everyone who actually strives to stay fit or is in the business of fitness takes her quitting as a sign of someone who ACTUALLY runs consistently...she is not a consistent person who is into fitness, but more of an example of someone with good genes who can keeps their diet under control...ANYONE of her age who claims to "run" as she says she does, could have easily trotted under 3 miles, and stayed in the middle of the pack of 3000 so the fans couldn't get to her...she's such a fake'n-lair!”

“Tom Vilsack was governor of Iowa until very recently. His connections as a lobbyist were very tenuous at best.

To consider the list of cabinet appointments alone and to see that you can only point to a handful of lobby types that were appointed should tell you something about President Obama's commitment to limit the influence of the corporate lobbyist.

If I recall the past president had a habit of appointing the fox to guard the hen house; one example I recall was a corporate lobbyist associated with the mining interests to later serve in a post created to monitor mining safety.

Or how about that guy from the horsing industry he named head of FEMA. How did that one work out for us?”

“His vote on immunity for the telecoms was case while he was in the Senate before he was elected. It was during the campaign - thus any voter had knowledge of this prior to casting his/her vote. Hardly a matter that a voter can now fault him for as a broken promise.
President Obama has not changed post election as others.”

vorpalmusic replied on Nov 28, 2009 at 09:38:57

“You're right that the telcoms thing was pre-election; so that it means it magically doesn't reflect on his character any more?

He renewed the Patriot Act as a President and it speaks to the same issue. It's like a double broken promise, one during the campaign and then again a month ago. He called the Patriot act "shoddy and dangerous" and pledged to dump it, then renewed it.

Here is a link about his promise on telcom immunity.

“Barbara, I love you, I voted for you when you ran for Senate against KBH. I even gave money to your campaign. But this is just not a reasonable complaint (it is a feel good/fun read) Any constitutional scholar or even shade tree lawyer would know to interpret the section in question "b" along with "a". The first question is can they be harmonized? Yes, the first establishes what the voters intended "marriage" to be and the second is sort of an unnecessary addition to prohibit that the state or any of its subdivisions from creating anything similar to what is defined in section "a". Bigoted? yes. Poorly written? yes. Outlaw of traditional marriage ? No.
Keep fighting Barbara. You are a good woman and a great lawyer.”

WhitneyKyle replied on Nov 27, 2009 at 10:36:18

“You conveniently ignore the phrase "or recognize'. Therein lies the problem. The language is clear, but it wasn't the intent. Had they used the term "and recognize' they would have not outlawed all marriage by accident, but the didn't did they? This is not an issue of vague language. It is an issue of clear language, but not the intent intended. In America you cannot just declare that laws mean other than what they say, especially if the wording is clear and exact.”

Do you agree that the distrust shown to the U.S. during the last years of the Bush/Cheney administration was a direct result of that lack of respect and cooperation?"”
