An Inglorious End to the Promise of Reform

“I agree! Can Americans be forced to pay a private company for a service? Is this constitutional? This is not a nonprofit organisation. These are coporations. We have really lost our say in this country.”

“Since ins will be subsidized and provided outright based on need, it can be characterized as a tax. Payment ("fines") will be made through the IRS on your 1040. You will check a box that you had insurance and receive a giant "deduction" (ie, if you didn't, you will require a tax payment). Social behavior, from returning to college, efficient energy home improvements, mortgage for primary residence, and donations to charities are all "incented" this way. Soon, having health insurance will appear on your W-2 or 1099.”

“Nurses are the heart and soul of health care. Obama and the Dems have failed us. I am leaving the democratic party. I am tired of my America being sold to the highest bidding corporation. I am having a problem with being proud of my nation, my government. I would leave if I had the money.
But being an indentured servant in the US, I will probably never be able to save up and leave. Fuedelism is coming.”

“The Democrats let the people who supported them most, down.
It's a deep disappointment.
Some that we trusted pulled the rug out from under us.
The corruption is getting so bad, it will probably take a revolt to stop it.
The Democrats had a mandate, and they could have strengthened their party, allowed the public to see how inept and corrupt the Republicans are, and how in touch and effective the Democrats are.
Instead, the Democrats joined the defunct Republicans and landed in the same mud, the other party was in.
Now their credibility and reputation is sinking to the level of the GOP.
Good job guys.”

“I sell health insurance. It is a racket. I would much rather sell some supplemental health insurance, to cover medicare gaps at a reasonable or no premium. I am sick of telling a young healthy family of 4 that they have to pay 5-600 dollars for health insurance. It is a national racket that we let happen. Vote out every member of congress that will not vote for reform. This is something the American people should be demanding! Health care can help our economy and let people move on to starting creative businesses. Why are we stalled? I want to be proud again. I like that feeling. We used to be the most creative nation in the world. We are number one at war toys and incarcerat ion....we should be so ashamed of ourselves that we protest the way we did in the 60's”

“So why doesn't corporate American support a single payer health system? Wouldn't this mean companies would no longer be on the hook to provide health coverage to their employees? Could it be because employees would no longer have any reason to remain at dead-end jobs just to keep their health benefits? And force companies to finally compete for qualified workers by offering higher salaries?”

The Cost of Corporate Communism
Commented Oct 07, 2009 at 15:48:32 in Business
“Why are we using the word recession? Shouldn't depression be used? It will be years before we get out of this. How did we let a few Corporations control us? Why do we not vote? We are all slaves to the corporations. We have lost our voice. A little socialism would do us some good now. For the people! As far as health care I would rather a government for the people, not corporations fat cats decide if I can have a procedure done or not. I think they have worked us so hard that we can't think about where we are going. We work to survive. We have no leisure time, which is healthy. We have no health care which is healthy and we have no say which would be healthy! Why are will still fighting a war. We need to get our voice back and take control of our nation.”

“I totally agree with you harborfish; technically we're in a recession but the effect of it to the average person who has lost their job, their home & their self-esteem is that of a depression. And speaking of such, the use of anti-depressant drugs is way, way up. No wonder.... .the corporations rule the country due to their donations and lobbying efforts and our elected representatives (for the most part) are listening to these special interests and ignoring the will of the people. I want to throw up every time I hear about the "debate" on health care reform. What "debate"? The fix is in and it's due to the $1.4 Million a day being spent by the private insurers and big pharma. This is a very simple issue to correct; just allow Medicare for everyone and to hell with the private companies; why should us citizens care whether or not these companies earn a profit at our expense? If Reagan hadn't promoted HMO's way back when, these companies wouldn't exist anyway! Finally, if we can't solve this easily-solvable problem, where the hell are we on the other important issues of the day? Screwed, that's where!”

“Where in the hell can our nation go if we don't have a free press? If information is fed to us by corporations that have an agenda, what can happen to us? This certainly shed a light on how stupid and dumbed down we have become. News should not be entertainment. News should inform us without corporate interests involved. News should educate us and bring us together to make positive decisions. This is very frightening, and I thank JON and Comedy central for uncovering this and forcing us to look in the mirror. It is our responsibility as Americans to demand truth, or freedom will forever be lost. Our founding fathers, especially Ben Franklin are probable rolling in the grave.”

“It is our duty as American Citizens to ALWAYS question our government. When Bush was elected I was made to feel as if I didn't love my country and I was unpatrioti c., because I questioned the administration. Especially when Dick Cheney had the closed door energy conference. Why were media or any other admin allowed to know what was going on? This should be under investigation and I don't see anyone getting mad or upset about what happened or was said behind the closed doors. I feel that whatever happened has allot to do with what we are going through now. I understand the republicans feel they are backed into a corner. But if they go by their own mantra then they are now the unpatriotic people, and they do not love their country. I want to let them in; however I just have no trust, and I feel that I was a victim of their secrecy.”
Airline Service is a Sham: Memo to Doug Parker of US Airways, Your Company Tops the List

“continued. ...The people I worked with at this major company were the most professional people and experts at what they do. Yet the execs and board of directors felt it was better to not ever acknowledge this. Our pilots were the best out there and if it weren't for them (they were union) we would not see any raises on the ground. We also started a very wonderful subsidiary, it was stylish and made money, people loved it! Management scrapped it. WHY MAKE MONEY. The peons might ask for a raise. And the government may not give us money when we whine. The Banks and Car Companies must have taken a lesson from the Bigwigs at the airlines because they were the best at duping the American people and government to supply CEO's, Execs and Board of directors with the money to screw employees while they line their pockets and jump ship. Quality only happens when it is demanded by the consumer. Quality also only happens when a company treats its employees with respect, fair wages and dignity.”

“I have worked for a major airline in corporate customer service for 14 years. The changes in the industry in that 14 years were incredible. I will not side with the CEO's or the stockholders and board of directors. I have seen paycuts and job slashing like you would not believe. Some of the jobs lost were with a weeks notice to mechanics who have families and homes in my area. Either relocate or leave! Yet the Fatcats took the golden parachutes and bankruptcy proof pensions while the workers, the people that actually ran the company took cuts and schedules adjustments after years of loyal seniority.
The flying public are not to be entirely excused. I have had compensation demands and threats for legitimate flight interruptions and cancellations. I had a problem with compensating whining passengers for not taking off in a blizzard. Imagine the compensation if we did take off in a blizzard and something happened. Yes flying is more affordable, First Class is now a joke, just a wider seat and a free cocktail. In spite of deregulation the airlines are still very much regulated. ...except for upper management compensation. I worked for a non union airline and we took the biggest pay cuts. Yet in good times, our pay was the highest to keep unions out. more to come”

Why Health Care Can't Wait
Commented Feb 11, 2009 at 08:56:35 in Politics
“45 million without health care....Th is number has been around for a long time. I think it is at at least 70 million. Health care for all Americans should be our top priority. I just don't think things will improve until it happens. We really have nothing to lose by giving it a real try. The health and pharmaceutical industry lobby needs to be ignored. We were at one time the greatest nation in the world. We need to get back on top and until we take care of each others basic needs it won't happen.”
RightWingMarine replied on Feb 11, 2009 at 10:19:52
“is this cradle to grave no insurance? This 45 you cite or the 70 million you make up are not permitted to buy their own insurance over the course of their entire lives? Could a portion of these be young people who are in good health and decide that they would rather have the money in their pocket rather than pay for insurance they might not use? Why can't they make that decision? Why should the govt step in and buy insurance for people who choose not to buy it for themselves?”
LeeHInAlexandria replied on Feb 11, 2009 at 09:36:59
“Lets look at the 45 million figure for a moment. About 23 million of those are illegals. Why should they get health care to begin with? That leaves 22 million. Approx. 9 million or so are young Americans who choose not to get health care. That leaves 13 million. Approx. 6 million are children whose parents could sign them up for state-sponsored free health care anytime they choose. That leaves 7 million. The seven million? Many of them are parents of the 6 million kids I mentioned and could sign up for state-sponsored free health care anytime.

“Delta must be threatening their employees with paycuts and firings again. I worked for them for years. The board and upper management change policy all the time. Either believe the customer and work with them or they demand employees collect the money. Depending on the money cycle. I am sure an executive is planning a golden parachute retirement. Delta is one of the only nonunion airlines out there. The only ones who got us anything were the unionized pilots. They are the greatest. Delta employees for the most part are wonderful but the guys in the ivory tower are very threatening to them.
On the other hand perhaps the people with larger bags were employees or part of upper management.”
