GOP Using Health Care Debate To Raise Money From Doctors
Commented Oct 08, 2009 at 22:45:57 in Politics
“I got the fax last week. It had a long list, in 3 columns, of doctor's names and my name in the top right column. I tried calling the number of Congressman Rice, who sponsored the phony ad. Instead I got a call center in Ohio who denied association with the congressman. They offered to "take my name off their fax list". I told them I wanted to speak to the Congressman and I wanted them to send a letter of apology and a copy of the fax with my name removed. They hung up. I called the congressman's offices in Georgia and in Washington, DC. They, too, denied they were involved, even though their boss's name was on the cover letter. They said it the was the physician's lobbing group which was an arm of the Republican National Committee. They referred me to the lobby group. The number turned out to be the call group. I called the DC office again, this time with raised voice and threats. I got a frantic call from a woman who worked "part time" for the representative and "part time" for lobbyists. She designed the form. I told her I was going to call the other doctors on the list. She told me the other names were false - "made up". She seemed apologetic and worried. I got a fax/letter soon after "apologizing for my frustration" and a promise to take me off the call/fax list. No word from RIce yet.”

“You sound very angry. Not sure why you feel you need to attack me; you don't know me and you did not seem to read my posts. Things are not black and white. All obese patients are not the same. Some are truly self-indulgent, eat to excess, fail to follow treatments. These behaviors lead to excess medical costs. Do we treat them the same way as someone who works to take care of them self? How about a smoker with emphysema who needs oxygen and keeps smoking? How about a diabetic who doesn't take their medications and ends up with heart disease? The list goes on.”

“As a reply to all the comments: I'm in private practice. I spend a ton of time with each patient. I've tried every type of therapy for smokers, obese, those who won't do a minute's worth of exercise. We offer all kinds of counseling. We recognize those who are obese due to genetic or deep-rooted psycholigical factors. I am very respectful of all people. That's why I'm in primary care. I care. Nonetheless there are many patients who are reckless with their health. A health care system that does not address that in this country is going to bankrupt us. There should be a premium placed on those who wish to ruin their health and ask the health-care system to bail them out.”

“I'm in private practice for over 20 years. Most obese patients do little if nothing to try to reduce their weight. They develop enormous numbers of medical problems and are a huge drain on the system. Special blood pressure cuffs, chairs, hospital beds, stretchers, pajamas... the list goes on. Most of them develop "disability" earlier than non-obese patients. We are already overpaying for their self-indulgence. Although I strongly believe in universal coverage, preferably single-payor, I do think we have to address problems like self-induced illness. if those folks who abuse themselves do not have to pay some kind of premium for care the system will go broke and those of us who try to live a healthy life will suffer.”

“And so what did you prescribe? A so-called "remedy" (diet) with a 98% failure rate? Do you recommend procedures that are proven to fail for your other patients? Given your negative attitude, it isn't surprising your patients aren't turning to you for help with their condition. You've decided they aren't worth the effort to treat before they even walk into your office!
The ignorance of the medical community in re: obesity is appalling. It's one area of medicine where we are back in the days of leeches and bleeding. Add to that the fact that insurance companies will deny fat people coverage but will do nothing to treat them if they do have insurance. Obesity is a very complex and difficult condition to treat successfully. Treatment is very expensive, involving various courses of treatment running the course from psychiatric to physical therapy and a lifetime commitment to intervention groups. Think of it as severe alcoholism where the drinking must be limited instead of stopped. Ask an alcoholic how far they would get if they had to take four drinks a day and still remain in recovery.”

“Don't know what kind of private practice you're in, but after 20 years you should know that overeating is not simply a "self-indulgence", but rather a result of deeply seated psychological problems. Unfortunately, society and the medical establishment don't address it as such (in majority of cases). It is obviously more profitable to resort to an extreme measure of making one's stomach smaller by surgery, than it is to offer long term psychiatric counseling that would attempt to reveal true reasons of overeating and eliminate them.”

Obama Far More Popular Among Jews Than Lieberman
Commented Jul 22, 2008 at 07:26:03 in Politics
“Anti Semitism, racism, bigotry and stereotyping ultimately bring out the worst in the person who practices these policies. As the lone or rare or "token" Jew in the Senate, too many people of all persuasions ASSUMED that Lieberman should act a certain way or fit a certain mold. Since their assumptions about what it is to be Jewish were mostly wrong, Lieberman ultimately disappointed many people when, in fact, he was acting as Joe Lieberman, not as "Jew-Man". Same with Blacks. Look at how Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are hung and accused in the public eye, due to misconceptions of "how a black man should be". Look, too, at the initial response to Obama, even in the Black community. where long held stereotypes kept many from seeing that here was a different, intelligent outside the box thinking man. Even Bill Clinton reduced him to "just another Jesse Jackson" and blacks themselves initially thought "a black man can never win". Over time, with VERY slow progress, we learn to see people as individuals, not stereotypes. We admire Obama because he is smart and has good ideas, not because he is Black. We disagree with Lieberman because we think his ideas are goofy and misguided, not because he is "a Jew". Some of us learn. Some don't.”

“For one thing it points out the fact that "Jews" are no more homogenous than "whites" "women" "blacks", etc. As a baby boomer main-stream American Jew, Lieberman is an embarrassment to me and most of my colleagues. As are bigoted ultra-orthodox Jews. It is part of a deep, internal struggle within the Jewish community. In the eyes of Hitler we are all the same, but in our own eyes and in the eyes of anyone with a brain, we are all quite different.
The idea that the evangelical support of Israel is "good" in that it funnels tons of money through private donations to Israel, is obviously a difficult subject. The Israelis are not dumb and are happy to have the money. On the other hand, the ideology is so bizarre, that in the long run it is wiser to cut and run.”

Your trenchant observation puts Lieberman in an even worse light. Hagee's perverted theology sees Jews exactly as Hitler did: you are all the same. The Rapture can't occur, in Hagee's view, until the Jews are back in their homeland. His beliefs don't account for the differences among you, or even your basic humanity. As far as Hagee is concerned, just as long as you're all back "home" so you can be cast into the lake of fire while he and his fellow fanatics rise up to heaven, it's all good.”
