there are real lessons to be learned from History, and usually not the obvious ones. I sincerely hope Mr. Obama reads this article.”

“Obama already effected that by going to Iraq. His withdrawal plan was all but endorsed by the govt there, and that forced Bush to get real with a plan to withdraw. It is now a written agreement. Gates has said it can be done in 16 months, so what is the problem?”

MomfromTexas replied on Dec 08, 2008 at 09:50:11

“Oh, and BTW, don't you love how Bush is taking the credit for Iraq going along with Obama's plan?”

“Yeah, I think everyone should let the guy get into office and govern for awhile before passing snap judgments. Then again, I suppose blogging is all about the snap judgment.

In any case, this man Obama seems to be the most serious, qualified, deliberate and responsible leader in my lifetime. He is the leader of all of the US, but I don't believe he's "sold out". I applaud his keeping Gates at DoD, it is the right thing for the Pentagon - and Gates is a reformer who wants to cut spending on boondoggle big systems.

To those on the left, which let's face it is a spectrum not a place, I'd say: eight years of Epic Fail. Give the new guy some time.”

Powell: GOP Leaders Spreading Muslim Rumors

Powell: GOP Leaders Spreading Muslim Rumors

Commented Oct 19, 2008 at 15:53:56 in Politics

“having watched it, I really have to say I was to my surprise brought to tears as Mr. Powell gave a stirring rebuke to his party's demonization of Muslims. He in fact told a story of a fallen US soldier, a 20 year old Muslim, who was 14 when 9/11 happened and joined the military as soon as he was able (this was the tear-jerking part). He went on to say that there are 7 year old Mulsim Americans out there now, and why would you send them the message that they can't be President some day?

I found all of this to be more important in the big picture than the endorsement, important as that was.”

“the part that was best IMO was when Powell talked about a fallen American soldier who was 14 when 9/11 happened, and joined the military as soon as he was old enough. He died in Iraq at 20. He was a Muslim.

thanks Colin, thank you for taking up for the idea that 'Muslim' is not synonymous with 'te rrorist'.”

“I agree, Hexham, that was so amazing. General Powell was able to verbalize what millions of us have been thinking for the past few months, and Powell was able to communicate exactly how the republicans are tearing this country apart and the racism and division the republicans have been injecting in this race. Thank you Colin Powell for putting all this out for the Repubs to ponder.

And how great it would be to have General Powell in an Obama administration.
General Powell also is close friends with many of the most distinguished Republicans in this country, and I'd bet 5 bucks that many of Powell's colleagues feel the same way, and support Obama.”

“biggest gains have been in Florida, Virginia, both swing states. The once-mocked "50 state" strategy of Dean is now seeing fruit, but the registration drives of the Obama camp are like nothing seen before. Obama is quietly putting together the greatest ground game in Presidential election history. Indiana and Missouri, once thought safely red, are now "swing" states largely due to Obama registration drives. Ohio has seen siginificant Dem registrations too.”

“Thank you for responding to my question. I guess my next question is, how many of the new registered Democrats in Virginia, Florida, Missouri and Indiana have already been purged from the voting rolls? I do not trust the Republican party.”

“This is something that we should all be forwarding amongst our freinds. This picture, and the text below it, are downright spooky. Amond of the "Treasonous Acts" listed are being "Anti-Christian", a charge that is still being used today. Others, looking back, are obvious on thier face as untrue, paranoid, or silly (or all three). Let's be clear; what Palin-McCain is doing is wrong. They are no longer trying to win the election, they're trying to win the post-election by keeping an angry base motivated against the success of an Obama Adminstration. They are literally putting Party First.”

“doesn't go far enough. you're buying into the idea that McCain became a reformer. He only became someone who described himself as a reformer. He was still adamantly a "deregulator" by his own admission. And you failed to link Phil Gramm into the deal.

“thanks SBG. As a 40 year old Gen Xer, I have to agree with you on this. Apathy was cool in our generation when we were 20-somethings, mainly since we are the "reverse bubble" generation. Nothing we do seems to matter since we are smaller in number than the groups ahead of us and behind us. I'm quite proud of what the Gen-Y/Z are doing, very happy to see y'all get up and get riled about it. Now excuse me while I go listen to a Foo Fighters disc (Yyou know Dave Grohl was Nirvana's drummer, right?). Cheers.”
