As a Californian, and a democrat, I too, am outraged. I hope you can get your message out to African-Americans in your community. Please don't let Blago use you all in this manner. It's not about race; Blago is attempting to save his own ass.”

“Give me a break. Olberman may be biased, but at least he isn't stupid like Gregory. However I hope that this is a step in their eventually goal of replacing Chris Matthews.”

“The Obama administration should make eliminating fuel subsidies in the developing world, especially China and India a priority. If not, the billions we will be spending here, though generally improving the economy and quality of life here, will mean nothing in the grand scheme of things if those countries are not spurned into action.”

“This article is bull. So the good people of Pennsylvania and Ohio aren't going to vote for Obama because he is too smart and reasoned and doesn't act like typical politicians? Get your facts straight. Primary victories DON"T translate into general election victories or loses. Pennsylvania hasn't voted for a republican since 1988! What reason do they have now?”

One Man's Quest To Save $100 From The 'Gas Tax Holiday'

Commented May 06, 2008 at 02:02:13 in Politics

“There are major differences between the Illinois and Federal gas taxes. Illinois is essentially a sales tax that is a percentage of the cost of gas and is payed by customers themselves at the pump. The federal tax is a fixed amount. Also Illinois didn't reimpose a new tax to offset the suspension of the gas tax. Plus, since prices were way higher then forcast the illinois highway fund was already overfunded by the middle of the year. And even with all that most consumers saved squat. 60% of a 5% tax on a $2 gallon gas only amounted to 6 cents per gallon or less then a dollar per tank. He also fails to mention that since the federal tax is an excise tax payed by producers and not consumers, the chances of those savings being directly seen by folks at the pump is very unlikely since the oil companies and gas stations wouldn't have any incentive to lower the prices as it would only reduce their profits. Furthermore, a new windfall profits tax would only get passed on to the consumers and offset any potential savings brought about by the suspension of the federal gas tax.”

woodchips replied on May 06, 2008 at 09:31:39

“You make a very important point that seems to be missed by most people: Any new tax imposed on the oil companies will inevitably get passed on to consumers.

As much as I could use a few extra dollars, I'd rather keep paying the tax to support badly needed highway maintenance and the jobs that go along with it.”

John And Elizabeth Edwards: What Do They Like (And Dislike) About Dem Candidates?

“Elizabeth Edwards, bless her soul, needs to realize that a government mandate to purchase insurance SCARES people, myself included. I'm young and broke and can't afford a health insurance policy right now. Until I know what those subsidies are going to be and what kind of coverage I'm getting, I am not going to support a bill that could jeapordize my financial stability. Those "15 Million" people that Hillary claims would be left without insurance in Obama's plan are just the ones who are estimated to opt out of buying it for those very reasons. Also, Obama's plan is far more likely to get through congress because it doesn''t have a mandate. Hubby John should be able to explain that to her. The argument for or against having a mandate at this point is purely academic without further information on the kinds of subsidies and policies people will be able to buy. If Obama's plan passes and turns out to be a success, be sure to see a push for a mandate a few years later.”

“My dear, if you were in a head-on collusion with a drunk driver and ended up in the hospital with broken bones, neck or back injuries or brain trauma, you will have wished you had paid for insurance. That's why they call them accidents!”

“There is a side note to that it is not just the young who would opt out! People that make a six figure income will also opt out there is no need for them to carry insurance if you have the money in the bank to take care of your health! I don't need it nor do i want it! why should I be forced to buy something I do not want or need sounds more like a dictatorship!”
