Education Crisis in Los Angeles Illuminates Racial and Economic Divide

Education Crisis in Los Angeles Illuminates Racial and Economic Divide

“Thanks for your comment camb94. I agree that the crisis is far from over, and as one teacher pointed out, schools in the LAUSD are bound to be impacted by this financial squeeze for at least 3 years. As for the Title I funds: I am aware that these schools receive dedicated funding for programs such as after-school tutoring, improving test scores and drop-out prevention, but I have yet to see this have a significant impact on the most affected schools in the city. Drop out rates within the LAUSD are still extremely high, and test scores are low. And with class sizes increasing, so too will the pressure on after-school programs. In context, Title I funding doesn't seem to go a long way. Almost 70 percent of economically disadvantaged students are considered "not proficient" in English by 10th grade, and the LAUSD has failed to meet targets for proficiency in mathematics.”

Welfare Policy, Leg-Up Versus Hand-Out

“I think the rest of the world is skeptical about a $700 billion bail-out that would distribute wealth upwards and squeeze middle-income families. It seems a backward set of priorities in a country with 47 million people living (and dying) without the basic necessity of health care, to pour a massive amount of government money into struggling banks. Quick to help out the capitalists, slow to offer relief to struggling American families - the economy is affecting us all!”
