“Sadly, Obama hasn't lived up to my expectations, especially in regards to human and civil rights. He's too centrist, and that's just not enough to fix a nation who's been twisted to the greed, apathy, and lies of the Right. He's too busy playing "Rock Star President:" playing golf with Tiger, basketball with LeBron when he should be repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," trying to restrain lobbyists, etc.
Lobbying IS just legalized bribery. We DON'T have a democracy. We vote, but it's as effective as an election in Iran (so who are we to judge THEM?).
We need a progressive president next term. One who will stand his ground and be so wishy-washy (the writing was on the wall once all the ex-Clinton people were appointed to his staff.) Through all the self-serving, preserve-t he-status- quo bums out.
Howard Dean in 2012. I want to hear a clear, loud Yee-haw from inside the Oval office. The sound of true change -- no matter how crazy people try to make it sound.”

Graydon Carter's Advice For Newspapers: "Give The Public A Reason To Read Them Again"
Commented Jun 03, 2009 at 12:32:57 in Media
“There's no shortage of corruption and ineptitude to uncover in our society. If newspapers would get back to doing what they were designed to do -- inform the public -- then readers would remain loyal.
One of the problems with media is consolidation. Once a newspaper becomes a cog in a giant machine, instead of it's own, local, independent entity, then the needs of advertisers becomes more important than the needs of the public, so investigative journalism gets thrown under the bus as profit becomes the driving force.
It's time to break up the big media companies and take back ownership OUR airwaves and OUR right to know the truth.
If newspapers would start showing some backbone and start ruffling some feathers by asking hard questions they will find readership. (Though I'm not ready to forgive the New York Times for all their politically correct missteps for the last 8 or so years.)
The secret lies in two words: Question Authority. It's what the Founding Fathers intended.”

Theater Director Quits Amid Gay-Rights Anger

“The guy has a right to give money to any cause he wants. He shouldn't have to resign because of it. I am very liberal. I'm against Prop 8. It is unconstitutional. But I am more against the oppression of an individual's right to be heard, no matter what the issue. Why must we all act like babies? You spend your money and vote the way you want; let him spend his money and vote the way he wants. Agree to disagree. Is that so hard? How can you be against discrimination when it aligns with your beliefs, yet discriminate when it doesn't. I'm sick of all this hypocrisy: from the Right and the Left.
Getting this guy fired doesn't change anything, but it tears at the fabric of our society. I'd like to see some gay people and Prop 8 opponents do the right thing and speak up for this guy. There IS a higher road to take. And there is a higher goal than gay marriage: the return of civilized discourse in America.”

“Every time I read these U.S. election system horror stories, I have new respect for Elections Canada which runs our federal elections. As Canadians keep electing minority governments, federal elections come up quite often. During the October 14th federal election, I voted with a paper ballot and a pencil. It was wonderful and the results were on televison that night. I caught a chap on CNN the other day explaining how you can rig a voting machine to misrepresent votes. I don't blame Oprah for being upset.”

“All I can tell you is what I've seen in Florida. After 2000 a panel recommended optical scan voting, but let counties decide individually. Congressman Robert Wexler filed suit because the touchscreen systems sued left no way to do a manual recount, which is required by Florida law. Wexler wasn't necessarily suggesting that touchscreen machines be scrapped, but he did want them to include a printout that would only be used if a manual recount were needed. The suit was thrown out in federal court in 2004, and the judge said there was no legal reason to scrap the machines, though he did say that having a paper record of votes was "preferable".
There were serious issues with touchscreen ballots in Sarasota County in 06, and Dem. candidate Christine Jennings unsuccessfully sued to redo the election. There were some problems in 04 with the touchscreen ballots in Palm Beach County. I know PBC has now switched from touchscreen to optical scan. Now they're using the third voting system in as many presidential elections, so people may not be familiar with them. I don't see that being an issue, but people are worried.
When Charlie Crist was elected governor in 2006 he endorsed the optical scan system, albeit too late for the 04 and 06 elections. I don't know if that helps answer your question, but the Wexler and Jennings suits are the legal precedents I know of, and both upheld touchscreen systems.”

“I'd like a free-market, Capitalist GOPer to explain why American car companies can't compete on the world market. They've had their tax breaks, their lobbyists defeat raising gas-mileage standards, etc. There even was a precursor gas-crisis in 19772 that was a warning to them. But what do they do? Instead of building more efficient cars, they find loopholes that classify cars as trucks so they don't have to meet fuel standards. They lobby for this and for that. I don't see the innovation, the flexibility, that free-markets are supposed to bring. In addition, they urge the public to "buy American" despite offering a subpar product. Great. Bring out the patriotic jingoism when you can't deliver the goods.
Stop drinking the Kool-Aid, folks. All this socialism is dangerous, Capitalism is the only way bullshit is a way for the Corporate elitists to keep fleecing the American public. Why should I "buy American" if the Japanese and Koreans make a better product? THAT'S Capitalism.
The fallacy of laissez-faire, is that companies will change and adapt better without government intervention because there is profit in it. The reality is that they'd rather resist change and cash in short term than make strategic long-term decisions which would keep them profitable. And never, is the well-being of the community or nation brought into the equation.
