“You are buying too much into the Republican frame. Obama isn't running from anything, he has several balls in the air and each requires some amount of attention.

Being careful, thorough, and listening to the concerns of lawmakers and the people is not a weakness. It is intelligence.

The bill in the House is a good one. Obama needs to back it strongly and remind Senators that the majority of the American public want this reform, including a public option. Any Democrat who does not back said plan will be facing re-election alone, without his help, and anyone who has shown a tendency to side with the republicans may be facing a Presidentially supported candidate in the primaries.

Message in short, neither the President nor the American People will be held hostage over health care reform. Pass it on pass on.”

“Non-compliance how? He presented him with two forms of identification. As long as Gates did not assault the officer that should have been the end of it. Disorderly conduct? It was private property. The officer was in fact told to leave the premises. Once it was discovered that Gates was the legal resident that there was in fact no crime, the officer was compelled to leave. Gates could have been verbally belligerent, but as long as he did not threaten or assault the officer, he was on his own property and within his rights.

All charges were dropped because there was no case and they realized it wasn't just some random black guy but in fact a well known and extrmely well-connected African American intellectual and they were about to face a PR disaster. If it had been me however I'm willing to bet I would have had to go to trial or plea-bargain for community service. What we are seeing here is that race starts you in a hole, but money and influence can dig you out of it.

In this particular case there was a test which appeared to be biased (whether it was or not is up for debate), the city threw the test out. That did not disqualify the White firefighters, it simply removed that particular qualifier.

Now I'm not sure that the City was morally or ethically correct in their action, but legally they were within their right (seriously the State and Federal Constitutions are pretty clear about this). This was a clear case of politics over law.

“If birth order and genes play any part in someone's sexual orientation then they are born a certain way. The question is how much impact does a permissive versus bigoted environment play in whether a person will express that side of them self or repress it?

You're a bigot. A White person who doesn't believe that a Black person should be able to marry a White person, or vote, attend the same school, or enjoy any other equal rights would be considered bigoted.

A Gay person no more chooses to be gay as a Straight person makes the daily decision to be straight.

The things you state about Gays wanting no one to be married is no different than the same kind of militant talk from certain segments of all groups of people. The less power a group has over facets of their own life the more talk you will see.

There is only secular marriage as far as our government is concerned. No religious figure can marry two people without first being recognized by the government, just like non-religious people.

As to the "breeders" comment, it's a retaliation for people who say homosexuals cannot have children and that is proof that they should not be allowed to marry since that is the "reason" for marriage. If that is true then the phrase should be worn with pride, but of course you know as well as I do that it i a logical fallacy.”

Remember up until a couple of months before the election support for Same Sex marriage was over 60%. It still is. This is a good choice. The writer seems to think that because the last few years of McChrystal were in anti-terrorism rather than counter-insurgency as being proof of the wrong tack being taken... Two things, there is no counterinsurgency to speak of in Afghanistan these days... it is mostly Taliban and Al Qaeda forces using terrorist tactics. 2. Part of any anti-terrorism program you always include a political side that seeks to manage local conditions minimizing blow-back as well as developing a network of informants that will feed you intel.

Whether McChrystal is the best person for the job I don't know, but his training and history certainly look like a step in the right direction to this progressive vet.”

“The poster has it exactly wrong. Suspending investigations would in no way shape or form prevent Choi from being fired. It was an investigation that discovered his sexuality (which was the way it used to be done) it was Choi's own words. No investigation needed, nor one opened. What the President would need to stop is the prosecution of the case, the courts martial that would make the ruling that will end up with Choi being separated from service... and I'm not sure if the President has that power.

If he does I hope he will do so, and then proceed to take steps to prevent any further courts based solely on a military member's sexual orientation... but ceasing investigation of a case with an open admission of of defiance of military policy would do absolutely zero.”

“It doesn't say anything about the draft either, but the passage to allow the government to raise and support armies has been interpreted by the courts to allow it to conscript troops rather than just raise the call.

So yes, promoting the general welfare would easily cover health care.”
