“Of course I realize that, and that was the point of my response to Dinrn in his/her comparison of the plague of the Middle Ages with this 21st century measles outbreak. Obviously today's medicine is lightyears away from what was available then. At that time, it wouldn't have mattered which you chose to turn to. Neither faith or science offered much help in that regard, so a parent who chose to take their sick child to church instead of a doctor wasn't being neglectful the way someone refusing medical care is today.”

“My point was that the science of the time had about as much success as religion did in curing plague. But thank you for your kind response nonetheless.

By the way, water, clean or not, has nothing to do with the spread of plague.”

“No, your analogy does not fit.
Juries have to apply the law to the evidence presented to them. They can not convict someone based on emotion. Think about it- if you were accused of a crime, would you want the jury to "feel" which side is telling the truth, or go by the evidence?”

Obama Calls For Review Of 'Stand Your Ground' Laws After Trayvon Martin Verdict

Commented Jul 19, 2013 at 21:32:16 in Politics

“The burden of proof was on the state to show that Zimmerman either assaulted Martin or shot him without physical provocation. The injuries that Zimmerman received, the neighbors' testimony as to what they saw and heard, the expert testimony, and the testimony of Martin's friend with whom he was speaking on his cell phone, did not support that.
Zimmerman was charged with 2nd degree murder, not with following Martin.
However, had Martin called 911 to report that some guy was following him, it could have had a different outcome. Zimmerman had already called the police himself, so they would have known that the two calls were related and prevented this horrible tragedy.”

“Black teens in the south do not call the police,,  In fact,, teens anywhereare unlikely to call the police,, It doesnt occur to them.. But by your reasoning,, I can , appoint myself the masked avenger, stalk you with a gun,, confront you ,, start a fight,, and if I lose I can kill you and claim self defense.”

Commented Jul 19, 2013 at 20:25:55 in Politics

“It is not against the law to follow someone. (Yes, over time, there's stalking, but that was not the case here obviously.) It may be creepy, mean, prejudiced, scary...sure, but following and watching someone is not against the law. It may make the subject uncomfortable, and there may be words exchanged, but where it becomes criminal is when it becomes physical. In this case, the evidence was more supportive of Zimmerman's claim that Martin assaulted him, banging his head, etc. That's what made Zimmerman's actions from that point on "in self-defense". Had he shot Martin from a distance, with no physical attack having been initiated, and claimed that he did it because he "felt threatened" by Martin for whatever reason- then Zimmerman's defense team would have had to use the stand your ground defense. But they did not because the evidence did not show that was the way it happened.”

BlueKoi on Jul 19, 2013 at 20:58:38

“By your logic,, whoever is left standing to tell the story is the innocent victim. .. Since there is no evidence at all that Trayvon attacked Zimmerman except Zimmermans word,  ,, I repeat,, THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT TRAYVON ATTACKED ZIMMERMAN,,  NONE,,, And yes in many more civilized state ,, following a child around is against the law and will get you arrested ,,”

That's dishonest and misleading. He's the president; he should be speaking with integrity.”

“The law does not say "if you feel threatend go ahead and shoot". There has to be an actual threat. The evidence was more supportive of Zimmerman's claim that Martin physically attacked him, while he had been following Martin in order to give his location to the police.
That physical attack brought in the self-defense issue. Had Zimmerman shot Martin at a distance, that would not have been applicable. The prosecution, for who knows what reason, over charged and then kept trying to dial back when it was becoming obvious to all that they wouldn't likely get a 2nd degree murder conviction.”

“Until we have security cameras and microphones covering every possible location so we can rewind the tape and see/hear exactly what happened at any given moment, this is all that is humanly possible- a trial in a court of law.
But if by "the b.s.law" you are referring to is the stand your ground law, it wasn't used in this case. It was a regular self defense case.”

free thinker 3-5-7 on Jul 17, 2013 at 13:30:56

“True, but juror B37 sure thought it was, check out her interview on CNN, and I didn't know you could pursue someone with a gun provoke conflict then claim self defense when you murder them. Oh Trayvon attacked him? There is no DNA from Zimmerman on Trayvon, so it's pretty hard for me to believe he bloodied his nose and beat him to the point where he though his life was in danger and Trayvon not have ANY of Zimmerman's DNA on him. I still don't know how he could have been reaching for Zimmerman's gun either if it's holstered behind his back. But hey a child is dead and a killer with his murder weapon is free to "watch" again Killing kids isn't cool.”

“Alan Dershowitz told the BBC that the verdict was "right" and that there was "reasonable doubt" as to Zimmerman's guilt. In regards to the prosecution, he said "She (State Attorney Angela Corey) submitted an affidavit that was, if not perjurious, completely misleading. She violated all kinds of rules of the profession, and her conduct bordered on criminal conduct. Halfway through the trial she realized she wasn't going to get a second degree murder verdict, so she asked for a compromised verdict, for manslaughter. And then, she went even further and said that she was going to charge him with child abuse and felony murder. That was such a stretch that it goes beyond anything professionally responsible. She was among the most irresponsible prosecutors I've seen in 50 years of litigating cases, and believe me, I've seen good prosecutors, bad prosecutors, but rarely have I seen one as bad as this prosecutor."”

“"No one can be kept from voting in this country, period"?
So you are saying that if there is a law against something or a law concerning something that nobody can ever break that law?
That means we should have no jails, no police, no prisons, no courts.
If there is a law against it, no one will ever break it.
Thank you, Moses.
