“Yes, a number of doctors in the US are highly overpaid, and have come to expect an ever expanding extravagant lifestyle. This doesn't apply to all doctors, and family practicioners make far less than heart surgerons or cancer specialists. Why is that? Prevention, and medical management should be the focus, not come see us when you get cancer or have a heart attack. We're completely screwed up.”

“COBRA is a programs that guarantees you can continue insurance coverage with the insurance company you were insured with while you had a job. Nothing pre-existing about it, as it's not NEW coverage and there is not a break in coverage if you pay the premiums, which are the FULL COST of the insurance plan. I'm a government employee and COBRA for a family plan is $886 monthly on the CHEAPEST plan. You're right, nobody can afford it, even with a 65% subsidy.”

“Which middle class is that? The one that is in debt up to their eyeballs because they have to have a big new truck, a bunch of expensive "toys" and a McMansion, or the one that borrows carefully, lives in a modest house and doesn't get a new car, truck, boat whatever very often?”

Nonamnesiac replied on Nov 12, 2009 at 16:00:01

“The Middle Class that as a result of deregulation was bombarded with "free" credit offers and exhorted to purchase homes, Hummers, and hot tubs by predatory lenders. The Middle Class who was forced into giving up legitimate fixed pension programs for 401(k)s that ended up evaporating. The Middle Class who were told to shop as their sacrifice for 9/11. The Middle Class that was forced to pay more and more for mediocre health care as opposed to having it provided to them through taxes on the wealthy. The Middle Class that funds the multi-million dollar bonuses for destyroying the economy currently being given to people who should be indicted and incarcerated for destroying the economy -- except they were smart enough to buy the politicians (including Obama), academics and a private army to make sure they would not end in jail. The Middle Class that saw their jobs sent overseas and their unions broken by thugs who violated the Rule of Law without penalty.”

“He lost me at adjusting the principle owed enough to give people who are "underwater" equity. Why? So they could turn around and BORROW AGAINST IT AND OBTAIN MORE DEBT?! No thank you. While the Obama plan may not be working, because I have read several places that fees to implement the "fixes" are just tacked on resulting in more debt, I don't believe that John Geanakoplos has the right answer either. Frankly as a taxpayer who is not submerged in overwhelming debt, who lives fairly frugaly and has lived in the same home for 12 years I'm getting sick and tired of being expected to bail people who owe too much money out of debt!”

And anytime someone tells people things they don't want to hear, but probably secretly suspect are true, they are labeled as "doomsday" sayers. Commented Nov 10, 2009 at 15:08:02 in Business

“"Dunkin' Brands emphasized the fact that its franchises across the country are small businesses, and said its lobbying is on behalf of its franchises and "our nation's entrepreneurial spirit." GOOD GRIEF. Only Republicans and rednecks can't see through that BS. Dunkin Donuts is NOT SMALL BUSINESS. Small business is my husbands sheet metal shop, co-owned with his 3 brothers, and employing three others. Small business is my self-employed father. Dunkin Donuts is corporate America.
If you truly want to support the US economy stop giving all the tax breaks to the mega corporations and give them to small business. Small business employs far more people than the corporations, and their profits are spread more to the average worker.”

"This Loan Is An Example Of What Went Wrong In America"

Commented Nov 05, 2009 at 19:42:59 in Business

“Good grief, no wonder our economy and the country as a whole are going to hell. What the "lending institution" did sounds like it was illegal from start to finish, (somebody better be going to jail); but the fact that these people didn't read or didn't understand what they were signing doesn't absolve them of responsibility. Unfortunately but they played a part in their undoing and have to face the consequences. What happened to providing 3 years worth of income statments, tax records, debt listing and detailed credit histories??”

they also paid off another house, which now IF they walk away form this loan, they will have paid off free and clear.

pretty savy for people who can't read and imply they were "taken" by the system.

Food Stamps Will Feed Half Of US Kids, Study Says

Commented Nov 02, 2009 at 18:28:02 in Politics

“One of the ways that people with a liveable income get food stamps, free or reduced school lunches is by having a large number of kids. Here in Utah, where large Mormon families abound, I have known several families with 8 or 10 kids, So while my husband and I both worked, paid day care and had the stress of two working parents, several of my neighbors got free school lunches for their kids and food stamps or WIC.

There are many people who truly need the assistance, and for some of them the assistance they get barely meets their needs; but there are dishonest, lazy or over-multiplying families who take advantage of the system. And yes it does speak to a general lack of ethics (often among the "religious") responsibility and decency in our society.”

“The last thing we need in America's cities is another Wal-Mart. Ever looked at where most of their merchandise comes from? China. So while jobs in America continue to vanish we keep right on sending jobs to China, and supporting their economy instead of ours. I do still shop at Wal-Mart occasionally. We live in a more rural area and sometimes unless we want to drive 25 miles to the next county we don't have another option. However, since the local Super Wal-Mart put the pet store, and a few other local stores out of business I really try to buy local, and that means supporting small local businesses. I also look for organic produce, of which Wal-Mart has almost none. It's not just about price, it's about jobs, it's about local economies as a whole. Americans need to think a little about what we spend and where and why.”
