“It's still the best bargain in higher education.

Fellow Californians, it's time to stop whining about what you're not getting and start thinking about what you're not paying for. Until California scraps Prop 13 and has a Constitutional convention to get rid of the 2/3 majority rule to raise taxes, there will be more of the same and education--both K thru 12 and the UC/CSU system--will continue to suffer.

Face it. There...Is...No...Money. And there won't be until there are more ways to bring in revenue.

And the Republican candidates for Governor in 2010 want to cut taxes more. Are they insane?”

MartyinLA replied on Nov 20, 2009 at 20:47:29

“I agree. None of these articles about the fee increase compare how the increased fees at our first class university system compares to other lesser quality universities in other states. The new fees are on par with most. The articles also neglect to mention that CA ALSO has a State University system, in addition to the UC system, that has cheaper fees. Students with a UC degree will make way more in their life times than others, so why should we cough up more? Do the students want CA to eliminate a campus or two so they can continue to get subsidized to the degree that they have been? By the way, I'm a Berkeley grad and can tell you that that has opened many doors for me, and even if it hadn't, it was a great education.”

“That's a bit of a stretch to compare Spitzer to Einstein, but OK, let's go with that.

I am not making this assertion based on what he did or didn't do to his family. I'm making it based on his illegal actions. I could care less who he sleeps with.

What you call realism I call cynicism. It's a sorry state we're all in if we all shrug our shoulders and say "no one's perfect". Not asking for perfection. Just a little integrity.”

“Aren't you tired of rationalizing the bad behavior of our supposed leaders? I know I am. We all deserve better and need to stop enabling these narcissistic jerks with our votes, no matter how smart they are.”

gbrooks replied on Nov 19, 2009 at 15:20:11

“Of course I'm tired of it, but these are also human beings with flaws similar to ours. I believe we need to be able to separate our emotional responses from our logical ones.

I don't know that Spitzer is a narcissistic jerk, and neither do you. I do know that he's slinging some heavy truths on this topic, while he is flawed in others. Nobody is perfect and it's an undeniable fact that men are hardwired to sleep with multiple women. I wouldn't deny Einstein's theories because he wasn't nice to his wife, nor will I deny Spitzer's potential because he messed up in his personal life.

I am female and do know what kind of devastation Spitzer brought on his family, but, as I said, he is knowledgeable and seems to be brutally honest about what our government is doing. I think the colloquial phrase is that you shouldn't throw out the baby with the bathwater.”

“That may all be true. But even if it is, the man was an attorney general who's job it was to uphold the law. He knew better and did it anyway because he thought he was above it all or worse, thought his bevy of sycophants would protect him.

You can't just sweep that under the rug because you like his politics.”

gbrooks replied on Nov 19, 2009 at 15:01:11

“I do criticize him for his actions against prostitution and I don't sweep it under the rug--in my ideal world, he would try to make that right. But the world is not ideal and what he is saying about our economic situation is worthy of my praise.

I would not vote for him if he ran on some crazy pro-family platform, I would vote for him if he ran on a platform of economic reform. I'm a realist.”

Carly Fiorina, Meg Whitman, Christine Todd Whitman, Jan Brewer, Olympia Snowe are just several I can come up with off the top of my head.”

“Exactly. Say what you will about Microsoft, Gates built that company from nothing over the course of 30 years. And now it employs tens of thousands of people around the world. And let's not forget that Gates puts his money where his mouth is in terms of charitable giving. The Gates Foundation gave out over $2 billion in donations to various global causes and the endowment is worth nearly $35 billion. http://www.gatesfoundation.org/about/Pages/foundation-fact-sheet.aspx

At least there are some wealthy people out there who understand it's their duty to give back to the community that helped them succeed. I wish more of them would follow suit.”

I'd like to withhold my taxes also, and spend the money when and where, as I see fit. This country and its' people would be better off if Gates & Buffet payed their taxes like everyone else and weren't allowed to avoid them through "Foundation" shelters. Save the phony PR, Gates is out for Gates.”

There's no doubt these guys are smarter than the average bears; they spend all their time figuring out how to game the system to their considerable profit. But more productive? I guess it depends on how you define the term. Do the services they provide put more people to work? No. Do the services they provide infuse more money into the economy? No.

From where I sit, GS is the opposite of productive. They keep sucking taxpayer billions OUT of the economy and increasing our deficit. Am I missing something here?”

“The only shocker here is that nearly 40 years after the feminist movement, we're still subjected to the same old sexist crap. You can have sexual harrassment policies until the cows come home, but unless management enforces them, it puts the onus on the female worker to decide whether or not the behavior is egregious enough to risk her job.

It's been my experience that bullies in the workplace are rarely dealt with swiftly or justly. More often than not, the complaining party is the one who gets sacked as a trouble-maker, and HR is only there to sweep it under the rug, protecting the company from lawsuits and not the victim.”

“This is the same BS argument Wall St. gives for paying more in bonuses than they make in profit.

I really do believe there needs to be a federal audit of higher education institutions and why annual increases in tuition consistently outpace the consumer price index. Further, why are those tuition prices at all of the top private colleges and universities within $5000 of each other? Are you telling me that Harvard, with $29 BILLION in its endowment coffers needs to charge the same amount in tuition as a small private college like Lafayette who is likely to have far less? That Yale's total fixed costs are EXACTLY the same as Princeton's? Or that NYU's total fixed costs within the most expensive city in America is the same as, say Cornell's in rural upstate New York? Absurd.

No, they hide behind the excuse that big variations in tuition costs would mean they wouldn't get applications from the best and the brightest. Hmmm. I think the capitalists would call that "competition".”
