9 Reasons Why Being An Adjunct Faculty Member Is Terrible

9 Reasons Why Being An Adjunct Faculty Member Is Terrible

“My youngest son just graduated and I discussed the teaching methods with him. I was not impressed. The instructors/professors were not there for him or any other student when needed. In addition, many taught to a social agenda along with their subject matter. I was amazed at what my son was telling me. Then there was the inflated cost. I quit teaching part-time due to demands of my day job. In retrospect, I am sorry I dropped out because I enjoyed it. After I retired, I approached the same university about part-time teaching. No go. They had a waiting list. However, they were looking for folks to teach students online. I know this is the coming thing, but I wanted to teach in the classroom where students as well as instructors interact and learn. Also didn’t like the grading system. No test, grading was based on research papers and all interaction was/is via email. I didn’t inquire about the pay, but I bet it wasn’t up to scale.”

“White House said a decision was made to go ahead with the transfer (terrorist) despite the legal requirement of 30 days advance notice to Congress. It is great that this soldier is now home after 5 years. Nevertheless, this Administration continues to defy laws and make up their own rules when it is convenient to them. In addition, the Democrats keep in lock step with the Administration and support these illegal activities. Obama has to be an embarrassment to them and they will pay the price in the next election. See some are starting to distance themselves from him and are making mild (operative word mild) objections.”

“Like I said we all know the subversive elements are among us. I didn't mean to single out any group. I see no problem with letting folks with minor offenses join the military. My son joined with a minor drug offense on record and did just fine. However, we must be watchful of gang members, felons, and others where there are indicators without violating their civil rights. Being observant is not violating civil rights when indicators point to potential criminal/subversive activity. Authorities should not make the mistake and overtly act before there is sufficient cause to do so. Gang members, criminal organizations, militia groups, and radical religious groups should be on the priority list to watch. There were many indicators that Lee Harvey Oswald, Timothy McVeigh, the Boston bombers, 911 hijackers, the Ft. Hood shooter, recent school shooters, and others were up to no good. Authorities failed to follow up because of 1) lack of resources, 2) incompetence, 3) legal restrictions, and/or 4) political correctness. There are folks in the country whose whole mission in life is to radicalize and/or convert weak soles to their cause. Some are well intended while others have criminal intent. Both are potentially dangerous to the well being of this country. However, too many folks want to skirt the issue and blame it on Bush or something else. Well Bush is history. Obama is now. Obama is looking for votes and agenda advancement without regard to what harm it might do to this country.”

“I don't support Obama but I don’t see a real problem here if these folks speak fluent English, graduated from HS or better, are not criminals, CAN PASS A STRINGENT SECURITY CHECK, AND MET THE TRAINING AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS. They should not get special treatment, have a quota, or taken over a qualified (real) citizen. I worked and served with some of these folks – most did just fine while others couldn’t adjust expecting special/tender treatment. Some times language was a problem (real or otherwise, you know when it was convenient).”

“This is nothing new. It has been done before. I wrote the Army regulation that supported it back in the 80/90s. Most will become good soldiers and citizens. I just hope the background checks are thorough and political correctness stays out of it. This could be a way to compromise our security and train those who would later harm us. We all know the subversive element is among us. Remember the American bomber in Syria, the Boston bombers, the Ft Hood incident, and those waiting to happen.”

“And let's not forget upstanding Americans Lee Harvey Oswald and Timothy McVeigh. Both would have adequately passed any background checks...and did...and neither were Islamic extremists. Let's also not forget the gang members who enlist into today's military...thanks to the Bush policy to allow felons into the service. They are/were all US citizens. What of those upstanding sovereign citizen militia members who join the military to gain training to take back home?

I hear what you're saying, but your kind of saying it wrong, and with a certain Muslim-colored tinge of PC.”

“Well if Obama and the Democrats would put forth clean. Clear, and straight forward legislation (funding, facilities, oversight, etc) without all the dam junk embedded to make sure Republicans reject the legislation, it probably would pass. You know easy to read and understand 100 pages. And by the way read it before voting. Democrats embed unrelated junk and the blame the Republicans for holding things up. I can never understand why Republicans won't counter, explain rejection of the junk, and use supporting media to make the point. Note I said supporting media. I know the government media would never point this out. When Republicans embed junk, the government media immediately jumps on it. You know a double standard.”

“John Boehner is correct. A standard scrap-goating. Typical government ran operation distractin from reall issue. The problem is a combination of poor management, lack of talent, inadequate staffing, funding, and inability to react to surges caused by our little wars. Firing Shinseki does nothing to solve the problem unless all other issues are resolved. I know there is waste in the system and it should be weeded out; however, the government effort to promote ‘do more with less’ is a failure and total BS. I know I lived through it before I got tired of the long hours, constant pressure, and pushing people to the breaking point. It went from ‘do more with less’ to ‘do more with nothing’. Staffing went from a 4 or 5 person job (policy developer/coordinator, writer/editor/publisher, system design/analyst, programmer, and testing) to 2 employees (policy developer/coordinator, writer/editor/publisher, and system requirements delegated to 1 person and analyst, programmer, and testing to 1 person). Yet the expectation was the same output in a hurry up time period. Problem was these folks were never trained nor had the skill sets or desire to take on the extra responsibilities. Morale suffered, excellent workers became average workers (or less), resentment set in, and retirement and turnover became a problem. I suspect that this has been the problem at the VA for a long time. Watch, nothing will be truly solved. It will all be smoke and mirrors; however, politicians will scream success and the media will support the cry.”

“He stranded himself by being a traitor. He put American lives, foreign affairs, defense structure, intelligence gathering at risks. He could have restricted his release but no he had to do maximum damage. I wonder if he was a spy all along. Countries gather industrial and defense intelligence on the US everyday and to include American citizens on American soil. Our so-called friends do it. You know dam well that foreign and domestic groups resident in the US that are attempting to undermined our ability to defend this country, destroy our economy, and force their culture into our lives. As conservative I realistic that we have to do something to counter these intrusions and protect ourselves. The problem is the risk of government/politicians using collected info to destroy citizens and groups who disagree with their politics. We already see the current Administration using government agencies and media to destroy the opposition, so what is stopping them from going one-step further? What is stopping them from releasing the info to third parties and claiming innocence? The current Administration is doing a sleight of hand stating that the communication companies will collect and story the data. Guess what, the government will still have access to it; therefore, no real change. What is stopping from withholding the data out of political correctness or other reasons. Then there are people like Snowden working for these companies who for whatever reason decide to steal and release the information. Bottom line where are the real controls.”

“The VA scandal is a slap in the face of all military members past, present, living, and dead. It doesn’t end there. I spent 22 years in the Army and another 22 years in government service. I worked hard to support our military. Like many others, I served. Most of us are proud of our service but are sad about how we are/were treated. I came out of Vietnam with the liberal mob calling us baby killers. I watch our government continue to cut our military ever chance they got and then expected military to deploy and fight restricted by foolish rules-of-engagement and limited resources. Military members came back from our little wars/police actions wounded in mind and body and where push aside without the support they needed. Then came another low blow. Some politicians and civic leaders branded our returning soldiers as potential radicals and terrorists. Now our current President shows his disrespect by not visiting France to honor those who fell on the beaches. Then there are indications that the current administration is building a civilian force at the expense of our military and defense capabilities. The question is ‘why’?”

“Look DNA science disproves the Noah's Ark story as it is told in the bible. Think about it and consider all the animal, fowl, insect, and human life that existed in the past and exist today. There is evidence of a major flood in the Middle East area and Noah’s family may have in fact survived the flood along with some of their domestic animals – who knows. However, the bible suggested the whole world was under water and only Noah’s group survived. It is unlikely that this little group grew to populate the whole world. Inbreeding alone would have destroyed this group. Consider the story of Adam, Eve, Cain and Able. Only 4 humans existed in the whole world. Then Cain killed his brother, was driven into the wilderness, and there found his wife and started a new family line. Thank about it, if only 4 humans existed at the time, who or what was Cain’s wife. The bible is full of disconnects as outlined above that just do not have any logical explanation. Many civilizations left verbal/written records of God or Gods and their relationship with such Gods. The question is did God and/or his representative (angels) live among human sometime in the past? Did these Gods/representatives have different agendas/conflicts considering the diverse and sometimes cruel rituals and wars recorded? And why did God/angles disappear and where did they go? Answers anyone?”

“The bible was written in the imagination of man during the time of their social and political environment often centuries after events supposed to have happen. In other words hand me down stories that probably changed at each telling. These men and probably women had messages tailored to different audiences to gain followers just like political groups do today. It was and still is a marketing process. These religious/civic leaders claimed God inspired the message(s) and writings. If God does exists, and I believe he/she does because it is hard to imagine that the universe and earth in general just happened. I believe there was/is a planned evolution lasting over billions of years and I believe it was a general plan, not a detailed plan. The question is why and what is the end game? In summary the bible as we know it outlines a code of honor, suggests rules for relationships with others, and in general how to live a decent life. Today this code is being twisted by all sides of the religious spectrum (believers, different sects, and non-believers) and as a result good order continues to break down and deep ideological differences continue to divide countries and groups within. The result is everyone will eventually lose as good order continues to erode and some insane government or group(s) unleashes the demon through weapons of mass destruction or just plain genocide. If one looks close enough, we can see these groups evolving today.”

“I understand the concept of 'majority'. I too have a problem with the 'electorate' concept at the Federal level. Popular vote rules at the state and local levels. I believe the majority should have the primary say in government matters with input from and consideration for the minority. I do have a problem with sections of the country telling the other sections how to live their lives. I believe in states’ rights with less interference from the Federal government. Right now progress is being held up by ultra-liberals and ultra-conservatives that are in fact in the minority. The problem is citizens listened to unrealistic promises and allowed an ultra-liberal in the White house and gave them leadership control of the Senate and temporarily the House. I also understand it would be just as bad if the ultra-conservatives gain control. What I don’t understand is why the moderates from both parties won’t step up, push them aside, and get this country back on track. It is as if we are two or more different countries divided by race, gender, religion, and other agendas and the current Administration, elected officials, and civic leaders seem to want to keep it that way. I don’t understand this trend toward destruction and why citizens are don’t understand their pending loss.”

What is the definition of your 'will of the people', rule of the minority, maybe?”

“I suppose it depends on what you mean by "majority". In a federal republic, a "majority" compile of winning a majority of seats as opposed to a popular majority. Point being, the American people spoke resoundingly in 2008 and 2012 giving President Obama's vision the mandate. Each time the GOP has obstructed relentlessly, thus the will of the people has been thwarted by process and procedure. The concepts are simple if one choose not to view them through purely partisan lenses.”

“I know, you feel it is ok for Democrats to be obstructionists. You claim will be ‘they don’t’. They block every Republican attempt to modify legislation so turnabout is fair play. I don’t believe that Obamacare should be completely trashed but some changes need to be made to make it more efficient and fair to all concerned. The last time I read polls, the majority of citizens didn’t support Obamacare as it is currently constructed. Shouldn’t these folks and their representatives have a say in its content and application? The Democrats made dam sure they didn’t when the legislation was developed by whom we really don’t know. I suspect by staffers, hang-ons with political agendas, and those who would be enriched rather than fairness and efficiency. All reports say Democrats representatives didn’t read or understand the legislation before it was passed. The 1,000+ page legislation sure couldn’t be understood by citizens or even those who have to implement it. I keep reading about surprises and inconsistencies that keep croping up. Ever wonder why the current Administration keeps kicking some provisions down the road. They know the legislation is damaged and don’t want the public to catch on and feel the pain until after the elections. What happen to you can keep your insurance and doctors and other promises that all of sudden are not there? What happen to cheaper premiums? It was left out that this was just for a select few; others just would have to pay the price.”

RichPort on May 16, 2014 at 11:04:11

“I disfavor obstructionism as a governing philosophy. My point was that the GOP is drooling at the prospect of winning Congress not at all imagining that the tactics they're used to stop the legislation from functioning will be used against them as well. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. As for reading complex legislation, remember the Patriot Act? No one read that either. Those are just two examples of Congress in general abdicating their authority to staffers. As for ACA, the GOP hasn't made a single attempt to improve, unless you consider repeal an improvement. The "keep your plan" bit is a well worn stretch of the truth. The plans canceled were the type only renewed every 1-2 years. Insurance companies did not have to cancel them, but after the 2 years were up would have to offer a plan that met the law's minimum requirements. We can get into games of semantics all you like, but allowing such plans would counter the goals of the bill, and allowing them to expire was the government's goal. Canceling them proactively was the decision of the insurers. All that said, I won't re-litigate ACA for your entertainment. Just know that if the GOP wins the Senate, the same tactics they used to thwart the will of the people will be used against them.”

“Ever wonder why Fox has the largest viewing/listening audience and the others outlets can’t or don’t compete. Of course, liberals will deny this fact. Could it be most of the viewing public sees the liberal media for what it is? You know a propaganda machine controlled by the Administration. The Administration can’t control Fox and the other conservative outlets so they attempt to discredit or trash them through cutouts, government agencies, and even restrictive legislation attempts. Didn’t I read somewhere that the current Administration wanted to embed a representative in newsrooms and other outlets. Maybe this indirectly has already happen. Somewhere I saw a flowchart of liberal media linkage right back to the White House. You know via relatives, old employer/employee relationships, past Representative and staff relationships, major supporters, and the list goes on. Don’t you believe that attempting to silence the opposition via government crackdown, intimidation, or cutouts smacks of communism and/or dictatorship? It is a sorry day for journalism when it can’t be trusted to be unbiased and/or won’t investigate and report the whole story no matter who it upsets.”

“So much to take in but I'll address this one. The administration did not want to 'embed' a rep in newsrooms. It was simply a survey, to be answered by the producers and associate producers to determine how the news is delivered. Are the producers directed to push one type of story over another? Is that story in the best interest of the general public? Are they being 'urged' to manipulate information to fit a particular narrative? But if a person listens to only ONE side you would never know this was implemented by the Bush administration. OK, I'll answer one more. Conservative talk programs are offered FREE to radio stations. Fox comes with basic cable packages, MSNBC is offered with more premium packages. Of course, conservatives will deny this fact.”

If the media was doing the job it did in past instead of catering to political agendas, much of the crap would be shut down and the media could be reasonably believed and trusted. As it is now, only Fox and a few other small outlets present the opposing views. And yes I know they leave out stuff that doesn’t fit their agenda JUST LIKE THE LIBERAL MEDIA DOES. Everyone has access to health care, no one goes broke due to medical bills, and senior citizens are guaranteed a comfortable standard of living.

In socialist countries, people get a free education. Everyone has the skill to be productively employed. By contrast, many Americans can't find decent jobs. and many are saddled with student debt.

In Scandinavia (and Uruguay) there are wealthy people, but they don't complain about high taxes. Instead of class warfare, the people of those countries share a communal sense of nationhood.

You seem unaware of the downward mobility of our country. People who used to have decent jobs, with benefits, have seen their jobs shipped overseas, or their employers go bust because consumers have less money to spend.

American taxpayer dollars pay for food stamps and health insurance payments for many people who work full time, so profitable corporations don't have to pay employees a living wage. Is that capitalism or corporate socialism?

It's not my job to tell you what socialism is. My explanation of socialism is no substitute for your own education. Do your research, cultivate epistemological rigor, and then try to prove you're more logical and better informed than I am.”

“Oh yes give the criminals a free ride while real citizens are denied. This was tried once before and we see the results of that initiative. The floodgates were left open and supporting laws were never enforced.”

“So far in this country, everyone has the right to express their opinions, agreements, and objections. Note I said so far. The liberal mob and supporting politicians are constantly looking for ways to shut the opposition up. Right now the queue card is ‘racism’ and administration’s pressure on the opposing media along with using government agencies like the IRS. If some folks believe being gay is a sin then that is their right and have every right to express it just like those who believe otherwise. Me I don’t care either way and I sure don’t agree with gay bashing; however, I do believe in free speech. All this political correctness is BS and is just another way to censure the opposition. It is getting to the point if you even say a whole sentence it offends someone. If you say a whole paragraph, someone will cherry pick it to make it mean something totally different from the real intent.”
