“actually the "new yorkers" that you probably had contact with are those tourists from locations noted above. New Yorkers are some of the kindest and most aware people, there is a spirit of camaraderie in this city that eludes those visiting and being annoying tourists clutching onto their purses, pushing their way through crowds and being rude. That is not nyc. Those are tourists.”

"Women Don't Go to Movies" -- Huh?

“Also look at the showtime hits of weeds and, the newest addition, nurse jackie. both female leads programs that have a huge following and why this household pays an extra $10 a month for showtime. We are also big fans of the rachel maddow show - also female "lead" hosted.
Further, I know more women who go to movies than men because, let's face it, men are cheap and movies are expensive.
On Saturday, I was near my local movie theatre and thought of going to see one. Not a single one appealed. Instead we met friends for dinner and drinks. Take that.”

“are you kidding? marriage is soooo property law. ie - in california, a spouse is legally entitled to 50% of shared and otherwise noted property of their spouse upon dissolution of the marriage.”

“This is where I would agree with you. I think it is on his radar, I think it is important. but Obama is a strategic and intelligent man who is advised by equally strategic and intelligent people. taking on same sex marriage could tank '12 more than anything else. I believe it is unconstitutional, I believe it is morally wrong and being touted by the same fear mongerers who say killing dr. tiller was right. And for these reasons, it is better than O stay lukewarm about it. It will do no good in the history books for him but a pleothra of other things will. Sad but true - I would rather have obama at the helm fighting for my country than for my right to marry my girlfriend. I think this too shall pass and am active in legalizing marriage in my state of new york. When that happens, we will marry. And once 2012 comes and goes, my tune will change dramatically.”

When the People Are Wrong -- A Son's Defense of His Father's Gay Marriage

“Oh jeez, you are right! how have i been so blind! Jesus was only about the rule of law, He was only for the people on the inside! He preached hatred, fear, anger, that judging was ok.
And it certainly was NOT the rule of law that killed Him. The screaming crowds - the majority of people who showed up that day - condemning Him to death and not the murderer. And certainly not because he challenged the rules of the day, the structure that had been in place for indeed THOUSANDS of years.
He never broke bread with people outside of the accepted norm - sinners, gentiles, prostitutes, lepers, tax collectors. He NEVER said, love one another as you love yourself. Or judge lest ye be judged.
Tell me, if you are a true believer in the gospels, tell me how? How is it possible that my 88 y/o italian catholic grandmother who refuses to even date anyone since my grandfather passed away 14 years ago because of her committment, a woman who starts her days saying the rosary- how can she accept me and my partner and our love and you can not? How can she ask the question of her priests and those who preach hatred, "Are we not all children of God deserving of love?"
What, I ask, does that say about YOU?”

“Agreed, my father went on to marry another woman. It is she who has and will reap any benefits of the business that my mother struggled to help him build, the money given by her father to buy and open it. Yup, his ss will go to her, too. She struggled working 2-3 jobs at any point in time to raise 3 children solo flight. She was discriminated against when she tried to rent us a place to live after he overbid her at the auction for our family home and we found ourself homeless. She was told, "We don't want trash here".
She is now alone, living on a small pension, a smaller social security, she lost most of her savings in the crash. The business - though suffering in this economic climate - is still thriving. You know what? Boo hoo - she is fine, she is loved, I help her when I can as do my siblings and LIFE GOES ON. though my parents still do not get along very well (it goes in fits and starts), when she got the ok to move into a retirement home, she gave her beloved dining room suit to my stepmother's daughter and husband. They are helping her move in a few weeks. And she is freer and happier than ever.”

“Actually, while the media does not do it, Jennifer Beals' current character on the L word on showtime constantly refers to and struggles with this issue - her being half black and half white - and does it very well. I realize it is a "lesbian" show but there are many issues that are brought to light and discussed thoughtfully while intertwined with the soap opera.”

“I appreciate so much the risk that Melissa took to say -"ok people, high road one more time and we can win this thing our way . . . which is not through hatred but tolerance and love". Which come on, that is what we really want right? And based on some of the things written, it was a risk. But I respect her for sharing her story . . . all of her stories. I agree that there are many people who don't get it, don't want to get it, outright refuse to get it. We stomp our feet and say, "Well, so what, it isn't yours to get." And while that is true, is it working? Survey's says - a big fat NO. And one of the most liberal states in our union, one of the most accepting and tolerant, voted to give them the right to say, well, since I don't get it, neither shall you. There it is. It stings. bad. But there may be something in this whole thing. I don't like that Warren was chosen. I felt betrayed, cheated, like a chump. But, a guy like this and say, well, clearly he is a fan of two things: fame and je$u$. Perhaps the more he's in the spotlight, the more he will be forced to deal w/people like melissa and her family, the less he will not get it and maybe, just maybe, he will find the tolerance and love that je$us preached.”

“it isnt a case of ridiculing supporters. it is a question of saying - this is the reality that a large part of the tax paying and military serving populations live with. it is unconstitutional, archaic, and based on fear. and if it takes screeching and threats to get equal rights for everyone in this country, so be it.”
RockySoldier replied on Nov 21, 2008 at 18:12:36
“screeching and threats only alienate you from potential supporters. even soldiers like me who support the repeal of DADT would abandon you if you cannot be more political and professional and less dramatic about being ok with threats.”
