“Then why aren't Nother Europeans obese as well? Most of N. Europe is highly developed. They can certainy obtain food with ease. The problem lies much more within our culture than it does with our genetics. Fast food and hours upon hours of tv watching caused this..... not genetics.... sorry.”
steppenwolfsayshi replied on Nov 17, 2009 at 15:24:46
“It's true humans aren't evolved to have so much food around all the time, but European ancestry is a genetic advantage for obesity. People with Native American ancestry have a lot of problems. Genes do matter, but almost all Americans have mixed heritage, so its really hard to blame on genes.”
davidallan replied on Nov 17, 2009 at 14:59:10
“I don't know about all of N Europe, but certainly in the UK over the last 30 years obesity rates are on a par with US. When I grew up in the 1950's we still had some food rationing in UK and most working class people didn't have enough money to acquire the habit to over eat. We ate calorie laden foods, ie potatoes, cheap meats etc but not in huge quantities, so I don't think the argument between poor nutition and obesity is the cause, it's the amount of food you eat. I'm 62 and still have 31" waist, same as at 16, and it's not difficult to control weight if you've never overeaten. I'm not being holier than thou because I think it's a bad habit like smoking that's very difficult to change when you are used to it. So I think it's up to parents to start their children on good eating habits which most will retain for the rest of their lives.”
Julia Bailey replied on Nov 17, 2009 at 12:26:53
“And why are the rates of obesity in the US higher in NON EUROPEANs?
And why wasn't obesity a huge problem 100 years ago, our genes haven't changed.
The problem is that we eat more calories than we get rid of by exercise. And we now have lots of available, high caloric foods. Your great-grandmother could never have eaten 1000 calories in one sitting and still feel hungry. But you can, grab a big chocolate bar.”

“Ok that was just really dumb. I'm sorry. Trying to compare something that happened 60 years ago to something that happened 5 months ago????? The truth is that the Phillies went up to NY when the Yankees were "red hot" and took two out of three. They should have swept them if it wasn't for Brad Lidge, who by the way is perfect during the playoffs thus far.
CC vs Vicortino???? Hahahahaha. Look up last years NLDS if you're really into you're baseball history. GRAND SLAM!!! CC couldn't even get Brett Myers out. The Yankees should be afraid.”

“What's going to happen when this new party takes power??? They'll start to cave when they see the dollar bills waved in their face. I think the problem lies within our system, not the people in power. The system is based on greed. The only way to stay in office these days is to run the most expensive campaign. That means taking money from corporations and then doing bidding on important issues such as this. We need to find a way to once again make politicians accountable to the people, instead of the money. How to do this exactly??? I really don't know....”

“1. If they take corporate donations and spend too much time with special interests, presumably the party machinery will withhold any efforts on their behalf at election time. A party based on consensus over rivalry will presumably have an easier time enforcing a smaller platform and selecting representatives more naturally disposed toward that platform.
2. If such a party is the least bit intelligent they'll work the rules to limit big money influence as and when they are able.”

“Energy/Climate reform is going to face the same fate. Corporations don't want it, which means it won't happen. The only thing I think congress has a chance to get passed is immigration reform. The only reason I say this is because I don't see why corporate America would be opposed to it. In fact, I think they may even welcome it (cheap labor). Sure, the right wingers will fight it tooth and nail, but they're not the problem. We can pass it without them. The problem is that the majority of Dems are now in the back pocket of the corporations along with the republicans.”

I had to listen to fox news all week and hear her family make remarks about "Obama giving health care to all the illegal Mexicans." I was largely outnumbered so I just kept my mouth. Plus, I'm positive there is no convicing these people of anything anyhow. Sadly, these are not "hicks" or uneducated people. They're simply brainwashed b/c they only watch fox news. These kinds of dysfunctional people/families need this trauma and drama to make their lives cohesive, meaningful because they have no way out of what they are currently involved; this is a syndrome. “I agree with you. Most of these people, as the racists they are, are scared that healthcare reform will provide benefits to Blacks and Latinos. They would not be so opposed to it if it only benefited Whites, but they do not want any benefits for Black people. In one news source, they stated that healthcare reform was a scheme by Obama to provide Blacks with reparations for slavery. Again, as long as they (the Whites) are getting benefits, it is okay. But, by God, you better not give any type of assistance to Blacks and Latinos.
They are uneducated, Their ignorance is one reason why I support Obama's suggestion that children go to school longer. Instead of getting married right out of high school, some of my fellow Southerners (born in South Carolina) need to go to college and learn to think for themselves instead of letting alcoholics and druggies like Beck and Limbaugh think for them.”
