“Ah, now that's easy because we started by doing that to the US President in 1996.

Social wasn't a good word to use at the time. After that, the nonprofit world seems to have adopted the expression social enterprise as a rebranding, whereas we've always seen social enterprise as essentially a profit for purpose endeavour.
In more recent times we've seen CiCs in the UK, B Corps and L3Cs in the US.
These are new forms of enterprise which is social in purpose.
The funding method is outlined in the founding paper synopsis above.”

“Same here in the UK, regrettably. Our social enterprise investment fund (SEIF) for healthcare turns out to be limited to nonprofit orgs.
Now let me show you the call for a social enterprise investment fund that was channelled to US gov in October 2006. It's the product of an American author and his UK registered "for profit" social enterprise. It starts by defining the broadest known spectrum of social enterprise to be included and goes on to identify clear social objectives with the proposal that it should be done "under oversight of an independent board of directors, particularly including representatives from grassroots level Ukraine citizens action groups, networks, and human rights leaders."
http://en. for-ua.com /analytics /2007/08/0 9/110003.h tml
This is what they got instead, a new foundation. Americans should perhaps be asking why.
http://www .eef.org.u a/en/148.h tm
The model we apply as a business investing surplus, financial and intellectual capital, in social objectives derives from a white paper delivered to the steering committee to re-elect the President in 1996, offering an alternate economic paradigm to co-exist with orthodox capitalism.
We generate our core funding by supplying UK government and corporations which has allowed us to leverage some of these social outcomes. For example in advocacy for reforms in childcare and adoption.

“Agree Steve, that we need to change the values.
One of the downsides of the sudden clamour for changing capitalism is that progress already being made is being overpainted. The web has a history, however.
Last night I was blogging on the GIIN and the concept of a social impact bond as described in The Economist and how the concepts described in the article had been seeded in the Clinton camp 13 years ago with a paper on social capitalism.
Based on a fundamental predicate that people are not disposable, as a people-centered model of economics it was then almost heresy.

Microfinance as a Solution: Beggars, Thieves, AIDS and Prostitution

“Vivian, I'm one of those who see microcredit as an important tool but perhaps not a panacea in it's own right.
For example, in the strategy paper described as a microeconomic 'Marshall Plan' which was delivered to US and Ukraine government 3 years ago we described the vicious cycle of poverty. We describe how children are institutionalised out of poverty to be exploited and neglected, are turned out to a life on the streets, where the majority find themselves involved in prostitution, street crime and drug abuse. They help fuel an HIV epidemic and provide the raw materials for the trafficking industry.
The solution proposed included microcredit, social enterprise, investment in childcare reform and broadband deployment driven by a social investment fund such that together, in Yunus terms the more than full cost recovery components offset the less than full cost recovery ones, to yield nil overall cost and with corporate investment enhancing government funding by means of investment in the social fund.
Though microcredit has yet to be deployed, we know that so far this has leveraged influence and action as I describe on our website in the business model with a social ROI.

I tried to help. Recalling the theme of a Capra movie 'Meet John Doe' where a reporter played by Barbara Stanwyck who in an effort to save her job, invents a 'John Doe' who protest against an injust political and social system and threatens to jump off city hall.
I pitched a pastiche at an ABC News reporter, inverting the roles, but she dropped me like a hot brick when I described what it was about.
]"Nice try" wrote Terry, "But the powerful sponsors of ABC won't want to hear any critiscism of capitalism, she'd probably lose her job".
It's the point at which I decide to enter the world of social business, launching P-CED as a UK based social enterprise and in an interview with a diaspora leader, he describes the aims of our work
The following year, Senator John Edwards, who like John Doe had been making a call for social justice in his One America campaign opened the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity in that same North Carolina town where Grameen Bank now aims to open up for microcredit”

And this may also be interesting. It comes from a speech 52 years ago recorded by the BBC of the founder of one of the UKs most successful retail organisation describing his concerns about capitalism:
"The present state of affairs is really a perversion of the proper working of capitalism. It is all wrong to have millionaires before you have ceased to have slums. Capitalism has done enormous good and suits human nature far too well to be given up as long as human nature remains the same. But the perversion has given us too unstable a society. Differences of reward must be large enough to induce people to do their best but the present differences are far too great."
"The dividends of some shareholders exceed their own highest hopes, hopes that may have been much too greedy, and the incomes of the more fortunate of the captains of industry are many times as great as would have caused the same persons to work just as hard and for just as many years if, instead of going into business, they had happened to become, say, lawyers or doctors. This is quite wrong."

“Hi mebble,
As Vivian hasn't responded to past comments on this subject, may I introduce you to the concept of a business leveraging development funding to be used as investment capital. Proposed as a model in 1996 to source the Tomsk initiative in Russia in 1999 which ran from 2000-2004 and applying the Grameen loan circle principle to create 10,000 small enterprises with repayment > 97% and 95% survival of more than 1 year.
Applying the same concept, now from the UK it offers the microeconomic 'Marshall Plan' strategy which was delivered to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in Oct 2006. This strategy designed for nil overall cost scales up from Tomsk to a nation and proposes a mix of microfinance, broadband infrastructure investment and social enterprise. we suspect that the US might now find it useful too.
http://www .p-ced.com /projects/ ukraine/na tional/
We determined in 2004 that it would be viable to foster democracy and eliminate poverty for one country at the cost of what was being spent in Iraq over a week. This is explained in the paper's summary.
The entire effort is the work of a man I found homeless in Chapel Hill NC in 2003 who remains invisible. At the time I tried a 'Meet John Doe' pastiche on ABC News, but the journalist didn't imitate art.
So please, if you get through to Vivian, let her know that readers are trying to respond.

“Peace is our business. That's what I woke up thinking this morning and this article seems very apt as the first thing I've read.
There's an article I hope others will read. It's an interview with the leader of an Islamic disapora in which the founder of a business about peace describes his 'swords to plougshares' efforts in Eastern Europe of the last decade, by sourcing and advocating for microeconomic development in contrast to funding weapons.
http://www .iccrimea. org/schola rly/econom icdev.html
It began in Chapel Hill North Carolina, moving to England in 2004 with a clear objective, to demonstrate that for the cost of a week spent in Iraq, democracy could be fostered, with poverty and it's vicious cycle of despair eliminated.
As with an historical act of peacemaking which preceded it, it was delivered as a 'Marshall Plan' two years ago to the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.”

“Alex, First let me congratulate you for being the first journalist to engage with his commentators. That lot at the Guardian will be envious.
When the people-centered model was first proposed, it was seeded as an idea virus first on campus at Chapel Hill and then on the web. The objective being to create an "idea virus" of how business could be modified for better social outcomes. At the time Bill Gates had been know to utter that "poor people don't need computers".
That position has changed radically, as we know and resemblance between creative capitalism and the 12 year old virus isn't surprising.
I tried to join in with the discussion on the Creative Capitalism blog, which launched the book and may yet be the screenplay. Economic experts around the world simply didn't want to know about success, in Russia.
We began the final paper, the 'Marshall Plan' strategy with a clear object in mind, to demonstrate that for the investment of what was being spent in a week on Iraq, it would be possible to foster democracy in another country at nil overall cost.
At Davos this year, the one US response so far in the launch of the East Europe Foundation, came as the result of this earlier invocation of "creative capitalism"

I suppose if they can't accomplish seceding Alaska from the United States, the other option wold be to annex the rest of the United States to Alaska, and then we could ALL live in Alaska!!”

“How odd to read this now. Years after BP were called upon to explain their position with the Kremlin. When as part of TNK-BP they helped create a fuel crisis in Ukraine in line with Kremlin dictates. Then they had no answer.
Now that CEO Robert Dudley has been ejected by Russian oligarchs, he calls on UK courts to sequestrate property of their London based billionaires. That, presumably includes the retreat of Moscow's mayor and his wife's recent purchase, a 90 room mansion in Highgate.
Are we being called on to storm the Winter Palace, again?
Lets remember that we were perfectly willing to dance when there seemed to be opportunity, Haliburton trying to step in to fund after TNK had tried to eject BP earlier in 1999. Even now, we have Vanco Energy trying to pull something off with Ukraine. A strange arrangement where the Rothschilds as financial backers somehow get replaced by Russian oligarchs with bearer shares and a company registered in the British Virgin Islands tax haven.
Get the picture? Our greed motivated capitalists are setting up deals with theirs and all of us working folks get the pain. For our Londoners it's polonium poisoning, you Americans have what the article above describes and worst off of all are the people of these former soviet countries. Ukraine for instance where the gulf between rich and poor is so great that they started handing out bread cards this month. lest people drop dead on the streets.”

“Very much a part of the vehicle for our activism to launch social enterprise in Eastern Europe put the soft power concept onto the map, through the dairy of US Expat Ukraine.”
