“Define what you mean by seeing color. If we say we don't see color, then we are blind and or we are erasing one another. What we need is an ability to see a human being who is black, white, hispanic, asain, or whatever color. Saying that we don't see color is a very loaded statement which will not bring a progressive solution.”

“I have questions... in the movie, when Bruno and Steve? were kissing, what do you think made the crowd stay and watch, plus what makes the men so angry about two men kissing? Although I believe that SC was over the top with some of the content. Let's say two men showing moderate affection, I wonder if that would cause the same amount of fury and if so, what is that?”

"The officer informed the group it was illegal for two men or two women to kiss in public, de Leon said. The five were told they could be cited for homosexual conduct "

“True, but Queer as Folks played into the sterotype of a great deal of sex going in the culture. To be honest Human sexuality is human sexuality and the physiological changes that happens with heterosexual couples happens to gay couple and just human.
I know many gay people who are celibate and waiting to meet the right person. Gay people who choose to discipline themselves and not give out their body as if it is a piece of bread.
However, our society has promoted sexually contented lifestyle and sex sales! You can barely find anything that does not promote sex. Barely are the groups that I am speaking of are represented in any arena. They prefer to promote the down low people who are another story for another day. The down low people are so unhealthy that this also creates a negative image. For instance Larry Craig. Yes there are some gay men who meet others men in bathroom, but not all. Queer as Folks really showed these bathroom scenes to not end. I just wish other gay life styles are presented.”

“I completely get your point, Jenny42. QAF had a lot of sexcapades going on between the characters; way more than most people have in reality, I'm sure... BUT...

it is a soap opera. And even the more traditional soaps on network TV have tons more sex happening than probably any average single straight person (in real life) has!
Would anyone watch TV soaps or any other kind of program if it was really a true to life example of "boring" normal lifestyles? Even so-called reality TV isn't really reality.

I still get what you are saying though...”

“In all honesty, I live in Az and have never visited Vegas, but if I did, my children would definitely not accompany me. Besides, never been there, I have no idea of what is kid oriented.
However, gay or straight, I have always assumed that Vegas is for adults. Mij13 has a right to his/her belief, but I just believe that boundaries are needed to help in a child's development. The brain is not developed until age 22-25 these kids can barely understand simple things, exposure to such things is just too much in my opinion.”

“I was born and raised in Alabama, it did not do us justice either. I have passed through Cullman, and being black we were told not to ever stop in that area, but once we were almost out of gas and had to stop. I have never been more afraid in my life. The shell station was full of men and when we went in to get a snack, they all stopped talking and were watching us. The cashier threw the change at us and told us not to come back again. It was horrible. That was in the early 90's. So I was really afraid for this guy when he was there, but I laughed and was happy that acting like a gay man he got out alive.”

“Mij13, see, I knew that we were talking about different things. The gay culture to me is about something totally different. I am attracted to females. I am a woman who loves women. Not all women, but those who makes my heart quiver. :o) I don't have to prove anything to anyone because I KNOW who I am. The gay culture to me is a culture of persons whose identities are already known and secured within their minds. It has nothing to do with sex or sexual behaviors. Sexual orientation is about our state of being who were are persons who are attracted to the same gender or sex. Now the best thing I love about our gay culture that people are not seeing because of all of the promotion of sexual behaviors, is that we are an intelligent, hardworking, spiritual, artistic, electic group who brings many gifts to the world. Our gayness is not the sum total of who we are. We are parents and we want our children to have healthy lives by presenting them with healthy options. Exposing them to men in leather gyrating with each other.. come on! Most of us could not deal with our orientation until we were much older. We needed to be taught more than just a sex act to understand who we are. Perhaps if our perspective of ourselves grew, some of the dysfunctional things might disapate as well.”

Mij13 replied on Jul 11, 2009 at 20:39:56

“Jenny, see, the think I love about our community is that everyone in it is not the same. Does not try to force their puritan views on each other. At least, not most of the time. Sex and nudity are not dysfunctional, just because you think the kiddies will be offended by it.”

“Thank you Peachykeen, I am a black woman and gay, I am proud of being who I am and I would love it if there was such a parade where we could show more of who we are and less genitalia or sexually contented parades.
I don't like being called gay for this reason. The gay population that is out front and center, normally does not represent who I am and how I live. Perhaps I am just dull, but I love my dullness and do not want, not just my children, but anyone's child exposed to this behavior.”

piul05 replied on Jul 11, 2009 at 20:15:43

“Very good post - it all goes back to the question of identity. As Foucault, pointed out in his classic "History of Sexuality" the construct of a "gay" person (i.e. sexual orientation being the main identifier/affiliation of an individual) is a modern one and definitely not a universal one; in many cultures you have men and women (just as it was back in XIX century Europe) who have sex with people of the same sex, but that doesn't define who they are.

And, reading the posts here, proves the point; people who prefer their own gender can be conservative or liberal; they can be racist or believe that all people are made equal; they can be religious or secular; they can be family-oriented or a loner; they can be sporty or a couch-potato; they can be extrovert or introvert; they can be tolerant or intolerant...the combinations are endless.

So, it's no wonder that, sometimes, movements and often, films such as this, alienate the very community it seeks to represent, for people are far too complex to have themselves defined solely by one banner.”

peachykeen replied on Jul 11, 2009 at 19:56:12

“Thank you jenny42 for your reply. Your view makes total sense to me. I'd like to see a reply from someone who believes it is fine to represent the gay community in the manner these parades do and they don't mind their kids seeing this type of behavior. There must be those opinions out there because some of these parades have hundreds of participants.”

“Come on Mij13, just because one orientation does it doesn't mean that the other has to do it. We are talking about modeling what is appropriate for children. Do you have children?”

Mij13 replied on Jul 11, 2009 at 19:59:17

“No. I never saw the need for them! Seriously, are we supposed to make the entire world "appropriate" for people who insist on bringing their children everywhere? I hope not. Because usually what is deemed appropriate is actually what adults think is the right things for their kids. Adults who are screwed up themselves by things like Christian fundamentalism, for example. Given the choice, I'd say let the gay pride parades stay as they are.”
