“There's "cheating," having an an affair, then there's obsessive, serial phil_andering; someone who from the day he was married, seemed incapable of controlling his behavior; incapable of passing up one single chance to "indulge" with anyone who happened to catch his fancy; strangers. He clearly was less concerned (if at all) about his wife's feelings or needs, his children's needs; it was and I'm sure still is, all about Tiger and what he needs and wants, moment to moment. Why get married? As he told one of his paramours, it was all about boosting his image. He's a phony.”

Why Hasn't There Been a Progressive March on DC?

“Do you have a link for that? Ending rescission is a big part of the bill, which includes the ins. companies not being able to discriminate regarding age, gender, medical history and pre-existing condition. To charge more for a pre-existing condition would be exactly that, discrimination.

We will also be entitled to a rebate should the ins. company not provide services for fees rendered, in other words, they have to pay out or you can file for a refund.”

“Do you buy fire insurance for your home AFTER the fire and expect the insurance company to rebuild it?

Do you buy flood insurance when your house is under 3 feet of water and expect it to be repaired for a small deductable?

Do you buy comprehensive car insurance after your car is totaled so the insurance will fix it?

Insurance is designed to have people buy in BEFORE they need it, to cover them just in case. It is NOT a pile of money that responsible people pay into so irresponsible people can reep the benefits without any of the expenses.”

And as a critical care nurse, having had to deal with more than my share of distraught families, frightened not only over the illness/injury of their loved ones, but the frustrating, devastating financial ramifications to boot, I can well relate to that man (or woman) standing at the foot of the bed/let's talk health insurance, scenario! All my best to your mom-in-law! :)”

Why Hasn't There Been a Progressive March on DC?

Commented Dec 21, 2009 at 17:45:11 in Politics

“I've been posting this very question here for weeks now and have gotten slammed for it, and lost "fans" because of it. Seems too many are content to sit behind their keyboards and "voice" their opinions; whine and complain and keep score rather than get up and take to the streets.

Meanwhile, this summer the part of h8, the tea people in all their des pick able glory, took to the town halls, the streets, the Washington Mall, supported by their party officials; they owned the dialogue, and the MSM.

We took to the streets in massive numbers to help pass civil rights, women's rights, end the w@r in V-N; some shed bl_ood or gave the ultimate sacrifice. Why now so silent, fellow progressives?

In autumn there was an attempt to organize a march on Washington; sketchy details were posted here with little interest shown. I offered to drive within 200 miles of my home to pick people up and drive them to Washington if they needed a ride; no responses. One fellow posts here trying to get progressives to join his FB group which is planning a march on D.C.,Jan. 15th; no one replies.

Some of the most prominent "progressive" pundits took to the airways and poo-poo'd the notion of a march saying, "No progressives, that's not the answer! Now, pick up your cells and let's take a poll. How disappointed you are in the POTUS...90 or 99%?"”

“Yes, while the opposition was mobilizing, marching and mis-characterizing HCR, with their party's support, liberals were sitting at our keyboards "voicing" our opinions, and yes, whining. To get women's rights and civil rights en-acted people marched, in the 100,000's of thousands; some shed blood. To help end the war in V-N, people marched in the millions and stood outside the WH day and night shouting their opposition; young students protesting at Ken_t State lost their lives. Sorry, not impressed with how liberal "activists" dealt with this, especially this summer. The tea people took over the conversation; owned the debate and the MSM, and won over those Congressmen and women sitting on the fence. Too little too late. Harwood and Nate Silver are right.”

samjones replied on Dec 21, 2009 at 18:33:32

“also, I don't understand how you can claim that only liberal activist need to deal with the false rhetoric teabaggers made. Aren't you involved in this process too, why didn't moderates go out and correct the falsehoods? Your answer to all this is to accept the process and take the medicine fed to you.”

samjones replied on Dec 21, 2009 at 18:27:20

“If you are not impressed with how liberals are dealing with this, why don't you read the Manager's Amendment that came out last night. You will see that there has been quite a bit of improvement in the bill, in addition to concessions to Nelson. Russ Feingold got some stuff out of it too. This would not happen if liberals kept quiet. Continued pressure will result in a better bill. Your suggestion of rolling over and dealing with it seems overly optimistic that politicians will do the honest and upright things to benefit the old and poor.

So please call liberals whiners, because we will continue to whine, to question the powerful, and to vote our conscience. We will compromise, but when it overreaches and is one side, WE WILL WHINE! While you roll over to the whims of swaying politics.”

“A little trip down failed Hillarycare lane, courtesy of Wallysmom, on another blog.

1. The doomed plan’s signature component was universal coverage.
2. An individual mandate required all eligible U.S. citizens to purchase health care,.
3. An employer mandate compelled all businesses, of all sizes, to provide insurance for their workers.
4. The bill bundled different groups and employers together in their search for the best insurance chosen by an alliance board from a selection of a few large companies.
5. Limits on premiums and incentives for cheap alternatives like generic drugs, in order to lower costs.
6. Abandoned any attempt at a Canadian-style single-payer system.

In 1993, there were not enough Democratic Senators behind one *single*proposal* to pass a bill, let alone stop a filibuster. Such leadership!”

“Guess you missed Lawrence O'Do_nnell on MJ today. The political pundit and former Senate aide who worked arm and arm with the Clin_tons on health care reform; aide to the Finance Committee. He was shocked, and impressed, that Reid was able to get this through, thought it would be impossible. When asked why Obama was able to get this done where Clinton was not he said, "ego." "Obama was elected by 53% of the electorate; BC was elected by a paltry 43% of the vote and governed as though he was elected king." And according to O'D_onnell, as hard as they tried to "buy off everybody...insurance companies, pharma, multiple times (his words) we still failed." But now you expect Obama to get passed everything HC failed to get passed, in one try, one bill?”

“Lower the standard of living? The poverty level for a family of four is now $22,000. Many states require people to be well below the poverty level to qualify for Medicaid! Under this bill, 133% of the poverty level will qualify a family for Medicaid; that would be families of 4 making appx. $50,000 per year. Families 400% of the poverty level (that would be appx. 88,000 per year income for a family of 4) would be eligible for "hardship vouchers" to buy on the exchange.

Great strides in turning this into a wellness vs. sickness model of medical care, saving countless billions in treatment for preventable conditions, and lives; a huge leap forward toward improving the quality of life, and bringing HCR costs down. No more disqualification for pre-existing conditions, or discrimination due to age, gender, medical history; huge steps forward. I have no idea how you define "quality of life, " but I do know you have zero quality if you're de_ad.”

“I as well; an R.N. for 20 years, and believe this to be a great foundation upon which to build.

The original soc._sec act, civil rights, women's rights, etc; they've all been greatly improved upon after the initial groundwork was laid. Just getting the American public accepting of the notion of any form of national coverage has been a monumental task, a very high hurdle to clear; the next step will be easier, and so on. It's not perfect. But, there is a reason that no president (though many have tried) have been able to get any meaningful reform passed for 60 plus years.”

“Well said. In addition, many more will qualify for Medicaid under this bill. The current poverty level is appx. 10,000 per indiv., 22,000 per year for a family of 4. In many states you must fall well below the poverty level to qualify for Medicaid. Under this bill, those with incomes up to 133 % of the poverty level will now qualify: An indiv. making $23,000, or a family of 4 making $47,000 per year.

And families making 400% the poverty level will qualify for "hardship vouchers" to use on the exchange. That would be a family of 4 making slightly over $80,000 per year! (300% of the poverty level actually exceed the avg. median income.)

No discrimination due to age, gender, medical history or pre-existing conditions.
For certain age groups, no co-pay or deductibles for annual physicals, wellness care (nutrition, exercise, smoking counseling etc.) and all cancer screenings, free!

And one thing I, as a medical professional who lives in a rural area am particularly excited about is the Sanders' amendment, which puts up to 14 billion dollars toward the construction of upwards of 10,000 community health care clinics across the country; primary care facilities (including dental) providing quality, affordable care to anyone...those covered under medicare, medicaid, those with private insurance, can all make use of.

Just a few of the things I believe make this bill a good start, a foundation for single payer to come!”

The rest, the uninsured, by choice or not, are going to the ER to receive uncompensated, costy care, then passing the bill along to the rest of us who do have insurance; to the tune of appx. 1,000 per family, per year.”

“This was just being reported on. The concept of a public option evolved, then was embraced by the left, and was not something that was suggested, or supported by Senators Obama or Clinton. I would venture to say that a lot of those so upset about the mandates in this bill (JH being one of them) were staunch Hill supporters, who (HC) was all in on the mandate idea, strongly advocating for them.

One needed only see what was going on this summer; the backlash against HCR in any form, let alone the public option; the protests, town halls (bag hers) to know the public option (this year) was not viable. No Republican was going to vote for HCR in any form, and the tea people mvmt. scared the heck out of any blue dog Dems who might have considered the public option; in the end they were loathe if not ter_roar_fied, to support HCR of any kind. I still believe that had we, the left, come out in force early, publicly; as forcefully as those marching on Washington, we'd be in a far more advantageous bargaining position the past few months.”

Coburn didn't even have the guts to respond on the floor; cow_ward.

This afternoon, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) gave a speech in which he quoted Richard Hofstadter's 1964 essay, "The Par_anoid Style in American Politics" and accused ObamaCare opponents of inciting "vindictive passions":

"Far from appealing to the better angels of our nature, too many colleagues are embarked on a desperate no-holds-barred mission of prop_aganda, obstruction and fear. History cautions us of the excesses to which these mal_ignant, vin/_dictive passions can ultimately lead. Tumbrils have rolled through taunting crowds, broken glass has sparkled in darkened streets.
