Taibbi, Kuttner Debate Health Care Bill On

Taibbi, Kuttner Debate Health Care Bill On "Bill Moyers Journal" (VIDEO)

Commented Dec 19, 2009 at 12:02:44 in Politics

“Pass or not pass, the Republicans have already won. As for public image, a veto is the only way for Obama to save face. Without it he looks a defeated socialist to the Republicans and a weak, milk toast form of a leader to his base.”

cyan Alaskan replied on Dec 19, 2009 at 12:45:36

“I fear you are correct. Despite a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress, and a popular Democratic President, the right wing has out-maneuvered and defined the terms of the debate. So despite overwhelming support for true health care reform, we're faced with a bill that addresses uninsured by making it illegal to be uninsured. Despite the economic folly of fee-for-service health care that will result in 20% of GDP on health care, that system will be buttressed by subsidies to the insurance industry. Whether the bill becomes law or not, we will leave tens of millions without health care but spend more than enough to provide health care for all. No one is going to reward Democrats for that outcome! Once again Dems confronted a pernicious fearful mean right wing ideology with timid bureaucratic tinkering; once again bad vision beats no vision.”

Awake-and-Sing replied on Dec 19, 2009 at 12:24:18

“NEWSFLASH:

What do you think is happening to his base. The fact that the President sold them down the river without standing up and fighting already makes him look like milk toast.

What do you think tens of millions of middle and working class Americans who will now be forced to buy for-profit insurance at extortion level rates, under heavy tax penalty if they don't, with no competition, cost controls or choice of any form of public option will do? The subsidies are a joke as it is. Do you think that being forced into monthly choices of (A) paying hundreds of dollars (at least) for a for-profit insurance policy or (B) buying food and clothing for the children and going into hock with the IRS will make people vote more Democratic?

Do you have any idea how many swing voters are in this group? Then there are the tens of millions who can "afford" it will passionate resent it.

Only a Republican mole could have come up with this policy. And it is a violation of the President's campaign promise against a mandate in case that matters.

As we've seen from NAFTA, this bill won't be revisited. It will cause long-term incalculable damage to the Democratic Party and to the progressive side of politics in exchange for an ocean of corporate campaign cash for Rahm Emanuel to roll around naked in.”

“I'm finally there. - To anyone personally concerned (not that I'd expect you would be), I renounce my affiliation with the Democratic Party. I'm done. It's over. End of game. | This is not to say that I will not vote for Democratic candidates, but that I will no longer be afraid to vote for those 'fringe' far-left candidates whom even I understand cannot be elected. - Mainstream Democrats, I'm am dead serious. Through with you.”

“What I can't understand is how any American would suggest 3 years in Iraq is not enough.”

Suthngal replied on May 26, 2008 at 23:57:50

“Hmm? Is this how you really feel, jkbowman, after realizing that we went there with false information. That we sacrificed mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters all in sake of war which was built upon lies? How can you suggest that 3 years is not long enough when we should be in Iran and not Iraq?

Can you look a mother in her face and tell her that her daughter/son has not done enough? Can you look a wife in her face and tell her that he husband has not done enough? Can you look a father in his face and tell him his son/daughter has not done enough? Can you look these soldiers in their faces and tell them that 3 years isn't long enough for you to continue fighting a war that should have never been? Can you?”

mari2JJ replied on May 26, 2008 at 23:27:38

“True but if the kids are not yours, if you have plenty money, and if you are sucking it up to the neocons who think the military is just for their own benefit to drape themselves in the military's sacrifice but still, you think they are expendable, then it is easy to understand. His anti-GI Bill thoughts puts a lie to his claim he cares anything about them except them serving in this disgusting war. So if you like someone who talks one way but acts diabolically different, then McCain is your man. He drove his Straight Talk Express into the ground.”

Korea is a waste of taxpayers money (as well as a lousy posting) while the Germans have enough $$$ to take care of themselves if they get rid of their conscript army.”

American citizens actually care about jobs, the economy, the value of our dollar, constitutional rights, climate change (from either side), war in Iraq, the deficit, education, and health care.

Shame on ABC.”
