A Different Kind Of Tears For Obama

Commented Dec 01, 2009 at 11:20:55 in World

“You are obviously a naive idealist. Having been there myself, I know the path ahead of you will continue to be fraught with disappointment. Eventually you'll learn that change comes slowly and painfully and only in retrospect looks inspirational. Obama is a pragmatic idealist, taking on a daunting agenda and having to deal with real world politics and politicians in order to do so. Stop thinking you know it all and keep trying to understand. You'll feel better eventually.”

charlot replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 12:50:35

“That is true, but there is a decent number of things that he could do with a stroke of a pen, in seconds, which would satisfy some of his promises and get lots of people off his back. He chooses not to, and we are all left disappointed.
Nobody expects him to clean up Georgie-Boy's eight-year, disastrous mess in one year, or even two, but there are some very easy and fast things that he could do in the meantime, and he's not doing them (like end DADT, for one glaring example).
As with all politicians before him, he is throwing under the bus a great deal of people who put him in the White House.”

“The nature of these 'guests' have turned this into an entertainment story. This is a major security story. These folks could have easily been assassins. We need to know what the story with the Secret Service is. I am aware of no such major problem in their ability to protect the president...this casts incredible doubt on the level of scrutiny they are using with this president. If the response of the American people writ large is reflected in how this is being reported and commented on in HP, then the much more serious questions will go unasked. What is wrong with you people?????”

“If every Democrat had such moxie and understood that as a party they could revamp healthcare, energy policy, economic policy, immigration policy, and 21st centry education policy in a truly centrist way as the party works to address the full spectrum of beliefs under their tent, then we would truly have an American renewal that the party could take complete credit for. Why oh why can't they see that? Or, perhaps they do and just can't articluate it in those terms. Only the wheel of time turning will tell.”

WinterParkMom replied on Nov 22, 2009 at 15:18:12

“I wonder that every day, unfortunately politicians are never altruistic and even if they are when they start, they end up giddy on the power. Then it becomes, no longer how I can help my constituents have better lives, it becomes, how many powerful people I can get to fundraisers and take pictures with. How much money can I make for my retirement.”

“This book left me speechless. I read it when it first came out and wondered what it came out of within the author. A firm believer that fine art is the precursor of reality, I looked at today through this shrouded lense for hints of a future that would so strip us. A humbling and disturbing experience. Read this book.”

Obama To Give Interview To Fox News

Commented Nov 12, 2009 at 12:17:54 in Media

“Here's the actual viewership numbers from last week: Fox news: 2.6 million, NBC news: 9.5 million, ABC news: 8.3 million, CBS news: 6.2 million. While Fox wins the cable news ratings game, Fox, CNN, MSNBC and other cable news outlets together amount to about 4 million. Americans overwhelmingly turn to the major braodcast channels for their news. Fox gets boasting rights only in cable land but when put up against all news outlets, they pull about 9% of American viewers while NBS pulls about 35%, ABC about 33%, CBS about 28%. Fox is far, far from #1 news in America. Perhaps more truth telling about these polls (as well as lots of other things) would help.”

CNN Paradox: Organization Thriving While Primetime Ratings Fall

Commented Nov 11, 2009 at 16:08:37 in Media

“CNN's focus on 'breaking news' throughout the day trivializes their efforts to be perceived as a serious news source. There are many, many stories that need in-depth reporting and other than 60 Minutes and PBS, there are precious few TV outlets giving us those in-depth, behind the screen, beyond the sound-bite looks at reality. Because they have tried to retain a non-partisan view, they are in a good position to re-envision the news they deliver. They might start by recognizing most of us are discerning, smart, thinking folks who are looking to understand what is happening and could care less about the latest car chase on some interstate.”

“These figures show that what happened to our economy last year verged on a complete collapse of our whole economic system. Actions like TARP and the stimulus stemmed the tide but the effects of something that deep unfold over time. Many views expressed here are a product of the naive inpatience evident in American thinking about a lot of things. Life is not a reality show like Survivor that unfold and come to a winning conclusion in 10 weeks. Time to get real. Things will improve, slowly if no new actions are taken, more quickly if some new energizers are put into the system. The sky is not falling, we are not going to collapse into anarchy or dictatorship. Life is not an action movie.”

“Since the first night of this series, I have been thinking the same thing. “The continual use of the word "silly" is inane in this environment. Surely in an administration of word crafters, they could do better in calling out the utter nonsense going on while not inflamming the situation. That said, the decision to post lesson plans having kids write essays about what they can do "to help the president" was just plain ridiculous. Talk about feeding the enemy! Where's the smarts I thought was in such supply?”
