“I think that every year, reporters could find someone saying a quote like that. But this year, the reporter chose to quote that person. It seems to me that reporters report what they already have in their minds about the economy.

When/if the economy gets better, remember that Americans have a short memory. They'll go straight back to credit cards. And reporters will no longer quote the people who use cash.

But hey, I agree with you about cash vs credit.”

“I can't believe the number of people here who criticize the Secret Service for not being tougher on ordinary Americans. Is this still a free country? The White House belongs to the people, not to the president! Since when did it become a crime to enter the White House?

If you want the Secret Service to be tougher, remember that our country has been slowly sliding toward fascism since 9/11, and Obama hasn't really made much change in that.”

overcat replied on Nov 27, 2009 at 13:54:36

“So since "the White House belongs to the people", anyone should have absolutely unfettered access no matter what, otherwise this will no longer be a "free country"? And this absolutely unrestricted access you advocate should apply to any govt. facility? Anything short of that would represent fascism?

Are you high?”

“When Abraham Lincoln was president, ordinary citizens could go to the White House and speak to him about their problems.

In Sweden today, you might run into the prime minister on the street.

Why is the modern White House so high and mighty that these people who crashed a party there face criminal charges? Is this still a free country?”

“This decade will not finish until the end of 2010. Time Magazine ought to learn some math.

The first year in history was not the year zero.”

ComicBooksandPolitics replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 23:26:08

“Just as the "80's" ended in 1989 and the "90's" ended in 1999, our current decade will end 10 years later in 2009. According to your logic, our culture considers the "70's" as 1971-1980, and the "80's" as 1981-1990. Anyone living in America for more than 2 days knows that is nonsense. Time magazine is right, you are wrong.”

LisaLisa1234 replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 23:22:35

“My initial reaction was similar, but you know, even though this is true, it's not the way most people think. So New Year's Eve 1999 was a big deal, New Year's Eve 2000 not so much.

I think Time Magazine is just going off that vibe.”

KristaJulieva replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 22:49:52

“A decade equals ten years. Any ten years. 1998-2007 was a decade. 2000-2009 will be a decade. If you want to talk about the first decade of the first century of the third millenium, yes, that would be 2001-2010. But people don't talk that way. They usually refer to the group of ten years that have the same three numbers at their beginning.”

lippy63 replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 22:48:44

“The new century began on January 1st 2000. Ad 10 years and you end up with January 1st 2010. You are wrong, Time is right.”

FantasticFourFan replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 22:47:54

“I doubt one more year is gong to make up for all the damage caused by the past nine (or eight). I can't fault TIME for being in a hurry to get it over with.”
