60+ House Democrats Say "Any" Health Bill With No Public Option Is "Unacceptable"

Commented Dec 24, 2009 at 18:23:47 in Politics

“You damn Progressives!

Upset about the Health Care Bill without a Public Option because it won't actually solve the problem. Upset about the Copenhagen Agreement because it won't actually solve the problem. Upset about the Bank Bailouts because they don't actually solve the problem.

Wah, wah, wah.

Why can't you let us Centrists simply pass the legislation that we can pass without causing any real trouble? Why can't you simply be happy as we compromise our healthcare, economy and environment into complete collapse?”

“Actually, Sama, I think that we are in absolute agreement...although my comment may have been too cryptic which is why you didn't understand.

The disappointing outcome of the Copenhagen conference, coupled with President Obama's failure to capitalize on the opportunities presented above to make any real change in combating carbon emissions, means that we have absolutely failed to make any meaningful progress on halting climate change just at the time we are being presented our final chance to do so.

Thus, what I meant above by "we WILL be living in a carbon-neutral world shortly enough...one way or another" is that if we choose not to take the necessary actions we WILL fall into economic catastrophe, civil disorder, mass migration, chaos, violence and death bordering on the extinction of humanity...and that that will be happening far sooner than most people think.”

“I'm beginning to wonder just how many posters, plus a pundit or two, took and PASSED a basic High School Civics class. The President can NOT pass laws by himself.

Does anyone still remember Kyoto, sure Al Gore signed it but the test vote in the Senate showed it would not be ratified in an actual vote 99 out of 100 Senators voted against ratification. Had Obama done what Ms Klien wanted in Copenhagen the same thing would have happened. Do you REALLY think 100 billion in payments to developing nations would be agreed to or funded by Congress? Do you think the American public would support it given our current economic conditions?”

“Yes, this President (whom I still regard as by far the best possible choice from any of those in the running this past year) has been presented numerous opportunities to make positive environmental change a priority in solving other related issues and he has failed miserably.

Regardless, we WILL be living in a carbon-neutral world shortly enough...one way or another.

Frankly, after the examples above and his irrelevant back-room deal with the Chinese this past week in Copenhagen, I am even more convinced that change will not come by choice.”

sama3033 replied on Dec 21, 2009 at 18:48:44

“Sorry Joshua but I strongly disagree - we won't be in a carbon neutral world any time soon because Wall St deems that it can make money from a cap and trade system that does more harm than good and Obama, in his wisdom, seems to have put the same British woman (and I am British btw) who is largely responsible for the sub-prime mortgage disaster in charge of carbon-trading. I'm not a natural born pessimist but something tells me that, unless we relearn civil unrest on a massive scale, Wall St will drag civilization to the precipice - somebody has to bring reason and no small measure of anger to this debate and Obama just doesn't seem to have the balls for it.”

“Normally I would agree with you. Unfortunately this is a problem so severe that the very fate of humanity hangs in the balance and thus small progress is really no progress at all.

That said, we WILL be carbon neutral by 2100 or so...one way or another. After this week I am, unfortunately, even more convinced that it will not be by choice.”

“Look, I have hopes and expectations like everyone else and I have not given them up. I am referring specifically to the context of THIS ARTICLE. I agree with the author that ON THE SPECIFIC POINTS MADE ABOVE our President has failed.

I have NOT given up on the President and your assumptions that I "did nothing of the kind" regarding working toward his election are completely unsubstantiated.

Furthermore, I am NOT saying that I want a dictator (and neither is the author of THIS article). She, and by extension I, am merely saying that on these points I am sorely disappointed in his actions as they COULD have been SO MUCH MORE assertive and in keeping with what the nation and the world as a whole NEEDS from the US in terms of leadership on climate change.”

How can you support a President for less than a year, when most of his agenda hasn't even been passed or enacted. Perhaps it's because most people don't know how the government works. It takes time for things to change. Pres. Obama is not a magician, now is he a dictator.”

“I think this is a faulty bill. I think it does not do what we REALLY need done.

That said, it will help people and it is the best thing we have now and so I continue to support it.

My ideology IS helping people. I do not support "leftist" causes because they are leftist. I support them because they are the right thing to do from an ethical perspective.

Of course, this article is referring to the blown opportunities in a far more serious area of our lives (yes, even more serious than health care, as we can always introduce a new healthcare bill in the future and fix things for future generations but we MUST act now if we plan to save our species as we know it at all) and on these points I wholeheartedly agree with the author.

We, and specifically our President (whom I supported with my vote, my time, my energy and my $$$) are massive failures.”

"Get the Government Out of My Social Security!" Inside the 9.12 Teabagger Rally

Commented Sep 14, 2009 at 18:14:40 in Politics

“NO! I am NOT in favor of either the previous administration's horrendous bank bailouts nor of this administrations lesser abuse of this same corporate waste.

I have been speaking out about this for YEARS...you Tea Party people are neither new nor novel.

But health care is another issue altogether. We are already paying for all of you uninsured people who go to the emergency room for treatment. We need to get control of our healthcare situation and we need to do so NOW. A Public Option would be no more intrusive than Medicare or Social Security is now.

Oh, sorry, you and your ilk don't believe that those are government programs (like the military, VA, most water authorities, federal highway system, etc.).

How sad for you.”

“I too worked hard to get this President elected and I completely agree with this article.

Personally, I fought for the "hope" that we would pursue "change" by addressing specific policies; like healthcare reform with a public option (which was part of his platform) and a real stimulus package (much larger than the puny one that was passed) and aggressive climate/environmental legislation and financial regulation and disentanglement from foreign wars and funding of a new green energy grid.

People may have criticized the President during his campaign as being vague or an unknown...but that simply wasn't true. It was all there on his website.

All I'm asking for now is that he live up to the goals set forth specifically in the campaign.”

I have made weekly phone calls to my congressmen and others. I have attended town hall meetings and knocked on more doors and contacted others by phone and e-mail. I have not stopped fighting for the things the POTUS laid out in his program and I expect the same from him.”
