Funny, the tree is not one of the sites mentioned in the Gaza-Jericho Agreement of 1994, which explicitly mandates Palestinian responsibility to allow free access to all religious sites in Jericho and singles out for protection the Byzantine-era Shalom Al Yisrael synagogue with its beautiful mosaics that used to be a major tourist attraction. (Article II, section B,15 (a) and (i) ) Oh, but wait--almost exactly 10 years ago, on Oct.12 2000 Arabs desecrated the synagogue building & damaged the mosaic--there goes that holy site...”
