Eleanor Parker Dead: 'Sound Of Music' Actress Dies At 91

Commented Dec 9, 2013 at 21:50:16 in Celebrity

“It's kind of sad to me that it's Eleanor Parker's Sound of Music supporting performance that ends up in the headline. The woman was a STAR. In the 1950s she acted opposite William Holden, Frank Sinatra, Robert Taylor, Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, Dana Andrews, Stewart Granger, and Paul Henreid, among others. She also had a role in the short-lived but ground-breaking '60s TV series Bracken's World. Even in forgettable studio films she delivered solid performances and she was very beautiful in an understated way. My condolences to her loved ones.”

“I understand this movie was filmed in Braddock, PA (as was much of 2009's The Road). But do they give the location a name in the movie? In any case, a fimmaker who finds a part for the great Pittsburgh stage actor Bingo O'Malley (he plays Bale's father) is alright with me. I hope this film brings some attention to the plight of returning vets who suffer from PTSD.”

“Those who are paid millions to entertain the public put themselves open to criticism of their work. It's part of the deal. For anyone from a classical musician to a foul-mouthed comedian to assume they are exempt is absurd. I can't decide if her assumption that her contributions to show business would never be criticized is immature or downright crazy. And to bring Jesus into is is laughable. I'll bet her management team is mortified at her lack of professionalism.”

“I agree. But I honestly don't think nearly as many Americans watch the news as watch comedy shows. The daily bed-time talk shows have an unbelievable influence on public opinion. It's one thing for them to poke fun, but it's another thing entirely to spread lies. Anthony Weiner, for example, never sent a naked picture of his junk. He sent lewd photos and messages, but not that. However, the vast majority of people believe he did because the comedians refer to his "naked pictures" all the time.”

“It's in the freezer section. Two tubs to a package. They have other flavors, too, although I favor the tomato basil. Thaw, stir up (it separates a bit in the freezer), and heat. Even my elderly mother, who lives with me and will eat very few things that aren't refined carbohydrates, loves this soup. If you just need one bowl at a time, it tastes the same heated in the microwave as on the stovetop. One warning: Don't give this to kids ... once they eat this, they'll never eat canned tomato soup again. Holiday greeting to you and yours, too.”

“I generally consider this to be a weak excuse from any public servant. Boo hoo, the media hates me. But I think the president has a legitimate complaint against the comedians of America. In the interest of a cheap joke, they have spent the last six month lying about whats going on with the ACA. A mere exaggeration is the best you can expect. Usually it's far worse. Some of the memes they spread are far, far from the truth. I wouldn't care a bit about this, except for the fact that they are much more likely to be accepted as purveyors of "news" than the news media.”

“In the 1960s, unskilled workers earned what is the equivalent in today's money of more than $13 an hour. Why has the Federal minimum wage not kept up with inflation? Because it has not, people are expected to live on HALF of what minimum wage workers lived on fifty years ago. Is that fair?”

“The minimum wage is (when adjusted) lower now. However, the rate of pay increase has also increased, as have fringe benefits at work. Ask how many people back in the 60's had company health care. Ask how often they got raises. Ask what the percent of people on minimum wage was back then compared to now. Ask how many illegal workers there were back then keeping wages artificially low.”

“Speaking as someone who has been a super-broke low-salary worker, I disagree. The employers making record profits from these people's labor should be paying a LIVING WAGE. It shouldn't depend on customers — many of whom can only afford "fast" food themselves! — to bring their salaries up to a reasonable amount. Not to mention, those of us who pay taxes are also supplementing the income of many of these people who are encouraged by their cheap employers to take advantage of government aid programs like food supplements and emergency medical coverage.

In 1968 (when Dr. King visited Memphis in support of striking sanitation workers who wanted $2/hr) the Federal minimum wage was $1.15 per hour. In today's money, that is more than $13! Today's Federal minimum wage should be twice what it is. Why are people expected to live on half the money they were expected to get by on in 1968?”

MyWeimaraner4Pres2016 on Dec 5, 2013 at 23:20:45

“The "living wage" will soon become a un-living as the prices of products & services begin to rise because they must pay their workers more money. I don't believe that many of the these people are willing to do more work for that higher rate of pay so the business can run using fewer people. Business owners will make their profit one way or another or they may just close up shop all together.”
