In Defense of Bruno

“And what a total surprise! Silverman and Baron-Cohen are BOTH totally obnoxious. And there are many, like myself, who don't care to peer as deeply as you have, into whatever their high-minded satiric motivations may be. The messengers, not the messages, are flawed.”

In Defense of Bruno

Commented Jul 14, 2009 at 05:20:52 in Entertainment

“I have always suspected Sacha Baron-Cohen's more serious beliefs and motivations and, if he has any, values.

Cruelty to, making fun of, one group or another has always been a rather cheap, low source of humor. Baron-Cohen in "Bruno" has pushed this type of humor to new depths. Apparently this form of low-brow humor is gaining momentum in our severely undereducated society.

However, underneath all the cheap laughs I believe runs a streak of rather sadistic meanness that Baron-Cohen has tapped.

A straight guy doing an over-the-top gay imitation?

Again, what is his point? All it succeeds in doing is to reinforce homophobic beliefs that all gays are freaks like Bruno?

I can only hope that after this "great success," exploring the last of the only three characters he's ever created [Ali G, Borat, and Bruno] he will now stop bothering us with his witless, soulless "social commentary" that is deeply anti-social.

I think I have a pretty good sense of humor and this is just not that funny.”

“It appears the movie I went to see and one describe are different. Did you see it or is this an opinion based on something else.

As a well-educated gay man, I do not feel he was reinforcing gay stereotypes. He took those stereotypes, pushed them the nth degree to elicite an extreme response from others. Was it over the top? Yes. Was it cheap and low-brow? Sometimes. Was is witless, soulless, and/or sadistic? Not the movie I watched.”

Will We Wait Until Another Gay Sailor Is Murdered?

Commented Jul 10, 2009 at 14:25:03 in Politics

“Gosh, It's precisely this attitude that permits violence against gays to continue: that they don't "deserve" anything better.

That they are unworthy of equal protection under the law.

Maybe gay marriage is "wrong" in God's eyes, which I'm guessing is behind such opinions, but no one has God's eyes except God himself. It's blasphemy to presume to know what God thinks.

If you don't want gays to get married in Church, that's fine. But according to our own American secular history [separation of Church and state, remember?], every is entitled to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

If what gays do is "immoral" in the purview of religion, so be it. But these people have a right to love whom they choose and to organize their lives, their families, and their property as they see fit, not somebody else's church.

Racism is no different: treating people as lesser because they are considered "unclean." [See historical racial stereotyping of Jews, blacks, gypsies, etc.]

I love Mr. Obama, too, and I think he's pretty great, but he did make campaign promises he really needs to keep.

And please leave questions of individual morality to heaven and to the individual. Otherwise, it's like playing God.”

“Being a member of a RACE is not the same as indulging in perverted sexual behavior.

The fact that Americans would like to denigrate black people to a "perversion" does not make them so.

Finally, NO ONE in America cares about gays and their partners hooking up. Just not in a MARRIAGE. Yet that is what they are fighting for...not equality, but the right to destroy what others have and believe in.

No white person REALLY believes that black people are inferior - not one.”

“I personally find the idea of gay marriage to be rather ridiculous. But that's because I see the marriage institution as a social organization that evolved to foster reproductively viable relationships. Our biological nature determines our reproductive needs more than any religious text. It seems obvious to me that recognition of the biological facts on the ground are what led to the scriptural endorsement of the traditional man-woman marriage arrangement.

However, gay people certainly deserve the same rights under law as anyone else. Which leads me to question why the government has any involvement in anybody's marriage at all. Why did we free people grant this power to the state to rule on our intimate relationships?

I think the best resolution to the matter is to end the civil endorsement of marriage completely. Let people form private contracts that can be recognized by the state just like any other contract, and let churches or other private entities recognize the relationship, or not, as they see fit. More freedom, and less authoritarianism sounds good to me.”

“Great post, Jon!

A friend of mine still wants to know how it was in McCain's power to 'refuse to be released from captivity before others were' some early release offered him because his father was an admiral.

If any story needs to be exposed, it's that one. McCain's bio hides as much as it reveals.

For example, which church does he actually attend? Obama's pastor was fair game --- does McCain even have a pastor?”
