President Obama Will Likely Dump the Public Option, and Here's Why

Commented Aug 19, 2009 at 18:45:39 in Politics

“Well...I'm busy (working in the health-care industry)...so I'll just take assertion #1 first- Does the average taxpayer earn more than $250K a year...because if not...than it won't cost te average taxpayer.”

bbbear replied on Aug 20, 2009 at 19:16:08

“Also, as it stands our profit driven health extortion racket cost the tax payer over $7000. per person. That includes the 47 million who don't have health care insurance and count on ER's., which is an enormous sum, paid by the US Tax Payer. US health care is rated number 37. On the other hand, the Canadians do it for $3000. per person and everyone is covered. The French cost about the same, but are rated number 1...
The UK does it much cheaper, but it's a true socialist system.. It's not as effective as the French, but better than the USA. So hell yes, al but fools know that Single Payer health care would save billions per year and everyone would be covered. Oh the other hand, if we get a Public Option it will most probably be geared to fail and drive more sheeple into the slaughter house of the health care extortion racket.
That is, this is probably more posturing on the part of Dems. Both factions, dems and repubs of the one Corporate Party. Since dems and repubs already know the outcome, it's probably just much ado about nothing.”

“Any one who thought sweeping change could be achieved quickly is disillusioned I think. The best Obama can possibly achieve are baby steps.”

jmyoung666 replied on Aug 14, 2009 at 04:03:10

“Why? He had a chance to push through a lot more than he actually did. Look at ho much Bush pushed through in his first few years.

The problem is Obama is more concerned about getting support rather than simply doing what he believes is right.”

DocTwain replied on Aug 14, 2009 at 03:15:21

“A plutocratic lie.
Anyone who says "baby steps" is an obstructionist.
We can get single payer in September.
It's what the majority of the American people want,
it's what the majority of AMerican physicians want,
it would save more than $400 billion a year, enough to insure all of the uninsured.
http://www.pnhp.org
Eliminate the private health cartel, and without our economy spending a single penny more on health care than it does now, our health care crisis would end instantly.
The mere existence of the private health insurance cartel and its alliance with the other cartels are the primary and secondary causes of the crisis.
Fight the cartels, and there is no longer a problem--you solve both the uninsurance and costs problems in one blow.

It is NOT too late for victory, whatever Brenner says.
THose who say it is too late are shilling for the plutocrats.
WE are telling the narrative, and the narrative is that the GOP is irrelevant, the Democrats have enough votes to pass any bill they want, and if the Blue Dogs and centrists don't pass single payer, they are corrupt agents of the industrial cartels, servants of the plutocracy, not democrats, and we will kick them out of Congress in the primaries.”

kemstone replied on Aug 14, 2009 at 02:52:20

“I disagree. He went into this with huge Democratic majorities in the House and Senate and overwhelming popular support from the public. He could have been a LEADER and called on the people who got him elected to stand up and make their voices heard, putting pressure on the Blue Dogs not to compromise away our only shot at real reform. Instead, he's spent this entire process making back-room deals and barely making more than a half-hearted attempt to explain to people what real reform would look like and why it's so desperately needed.

I believed that if any president could possibly get it done, it was Obama. But he's made demonstrable errors in his handling of this issue and proven himself an ineffective leader. Many will suffer and some will die because he failed to stand up and fight for them.”

alk123 replied on Aug 14, 2009 at 02:46:12

“This is wrong-headed. If he blows this chance, it will be a long time before we get another one. Incrementalism is fine in the academic environment of the Judiciary, but the demos are fickle, and shifts in Congress have to happen quickly.”

RobertFromMN replied on Aug 14, 2009 at 02:40:54

“If the best Obama can do, even with a fillabuster-proof majority in the Seante and the strong support of the American public, is accept a series of compromises which save some political face but fail to deliver any genuine, substantial reform, then the American system of government is fundamentally broken.”

California attempted to allow Medicaid recipients to "choose" by allowing competing health firms to bid for the lives in managed care. BIggest mess in the nation. A complete cf....I handle insurance billing for private practice physician groups in 4 states. The California managed care system is the worst and the main reason is middleman profits.

Terrible idea.”

The other two are good singers, but he's a showman with a huge upside. Last night, Simon said he might be a Freddie Mercury inheritor and I think he's right on target.”

“I live 5 miles south of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. My husband and I drove down to the grange hall down the road this morning and walked in. Saw a couple neighbors we know (including the one from next door who is running for local office as a Democrat). We were already registered so we walked by the same day registration table, had our names found in a book and signed next to them. We were given paper ballots to bubble in and walked right over to a booth...(there were about 10 of them with 2 open when I chose). It took about 5 minutes to fill out my ballot and then I waited for husband over by the wood stove in the corner. It was a little brisker than last Presidential election, but no waits. This is one of the reddest areas in the nation - but more Chuck Baldwin, Constitutional Party signs than McCain in town. Everyone cheerful and friendly...
We voted for Obama as is our 19 year old daughter in her first election and my 24 year old daughter and her boyfriend and our 26 year old son (it's his birthday) and his wife.

Keeping my fingers crossed and on pins and needles all day.”

“Well...I dunno...at least he didn't give HALF a MILLION DOLLARS to Khalidi.

During the 1990s, while he served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars.
A 1998 tax filing for the McCain-led group shows a $448,873 grant to Khalidi's Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank. The relationship extends back as far as 1993, when John McCain joined IRI as chairman in January. Foreign Affairs noted in September of that year that IRI had helped fund several extensive studies in Palestine run by Khalidi's group, including over 30 public opinion polls and a study of "sociopolitical attitudes."”
