“They know. It's done according to how much they can make off you. If you have enough in there to cover a bunch of little debts incurred first, then a big debt comes through - they will pay the big debt off and charge nsf charges for all the little ones. Maximizing their profits at your expense-literally.”

“I just had Chase reverse $150 in NSF fees they were trying to charge me. They tried to tell me that they wouldn't reverse it unless it was their error. I said that I didn't appreciate the sudden reordering of transactions that had already been paid for according to the previous two day's logs on their website when I made a large deposit. I said it was usury and I wasn't going to take it sitting down.
Now, I'm not positive if they really found an error on their part, or if it was my rather curt manner - but they got back on the phone with me and reversed all those charges effective immediately.
I rarely overdraw my account - this is such bs. I'm shopping for a CU.”

“Most banks will "reverse" NSF fees since they realize it's really not their money to begin with; just don't call them every week. The banks are simply taking advantage of the fact that people don't/can't keep track of their exact balance.”

“That's a good idea really. Think about it. Why are overdraft fees so much money anyway? With automation and computers it probably costs pennies (if anything) is business cost to deal with an overdraft. Seriously, we should have revolted long ago.”

That said, for banks to not only make obscene profits from the inevitable mistake - but to also engage in practices designed to create those mistakes (reordering desposits; reordering transactions; holding deposits to maximize their profit, etc) they most certainly do not deserve the defense attorney treatment you are giving them.
No one has a problem admitting they made a mistake and paying a reasonable fee accordingly. That is not how it goes anymore and that is just not ok.”

“What's disgusting about the banks (and too many other corporations) is that once they have discovered a cash cow, they alter everything ("costs" of doing business, bonuses, et al) to reflect that. Then they pretend they NEED that income they did fine without before and jack up other areas to maintain that artificial and obscene level of income.
When the rest of us get reduced income, we adjust our lives around it no matter how much it takes to run our homes and take care of our families. But somehow these overpaid do-nothings have no idea how (read: no desire) to do the same with billions of dollars to work with.”
