“First the right hollers that government competition isn't fair for the corporations. Now you complain because the Senate bill doesn't contain that competition. Ever wonder why the left doesn't take you seriously?”

“Well said!! Tiger's personal life has absolutely no impact on my life or my involvement in the game of golf - either playing or watching it played. TW never promised me he would be faithful to his wife, he never set himself up as a moral leader and he's never tried to tell me how I should live my life. I'm not going to try and tell him how to live his, either.”

Fire Robert Gibbs...Or At Least Make Him Apologize to Howard Dean

Commented Dec 18, 2009 at 13:23:13 in Politics

“Ridiculous. When Gibbs slams a Republican for making an opposing remark we all cheer. But when a Democrat makes an opposing remark the WH is supposed to roll over? This is politics at it's ugliest but that's all it is - politics. Dean has a lot of pull with many House Dems as well as many voters. The WH doesn't want the bill killed, although it does want it improved. So, the WH will naturally do what it can to nullify the effects of Dean's remarks.

All this whining about apologies and firing people is simply childish.”

hp blogger Miles Mogulescu replied on Dec 18, 2009 at 13:38:14

“There's nothing wrong with the White House criticizing Dean's position on the merits. What's disturbing is their attacking his character and sanity for having the termerity to disagree with the White House.
That said, I think you nailed what's really going on: "Dean has a lot of pull with many House Dems as well as many voters. .. So, the WH will naturally do what it can to nullify the effects of Dean's remarks."
OK, tell us why you think Dean's wrong. Don't tell us that Dean's crazy.”

Are You There Barack? It's Me, David

Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 18:31:18 in Entertainment

“When Oprah asked Obama to give himself a grade a memory came to mind of Barbara Walters interviewing Bette Midler and a couple of other "It" girls 20 or so years ago. She asked each one to rate themselves on a scale of 1 to 10. All the other little cuties gave their cute little smiles and said, "I'm a solid 7" or "I think I'm and 8 and a half" and other pap. Bette Midler said, "Hell, I'm a happening girl. I'm a 55!" I thought that was a killer answer to a totally stupid question. I wish Obama had given himself an A++++++. After all, anything he said would have been pounced on and derided by the right.

As for the rest of your beautifully written post, I can only say, you have put into words the way many of us are feeling. I'm sending a copy to the White House. I hope lots of people will do the same.”

“So, everyone is being asked to stick to the 10 minute rule - and I'm guessing this probably has a lot to do with the windbags that have held up legislation for so long that the Senators are facing having to work through Christmas (poor, poor babies) - but Lieberman and McCain think they should be given special privileges. Wa-wa-wa.”

“It didn't sound like motodude understood that. As for the likelihood of Obama signing it with improvements, your guess is as good as mine but I would think it would depend on the improvements. This bill does not sound like the one that Obama has said that he wants.

At this point I'm not about to get my hopes up for much but I'm also not going to start blaming Obama for Baucus's screwed up bill. Not yet, anyway.

What I have done is let him and my Senators know how I feel about this bill - in no uncertain terms.”

“That makes no sense at all. No one that is making a profit is going to stop making that profit just for revenge. Besides, that would mean they would have to start up a new business every year, because consumers don't take a vacation from wanting products and services. And start-up costs are astronomical when you have to woo back your customers from a competitor.”

“What is really irresponsible is mandating that every American buy private insurance without putting mechanisms into place to control the cost of that insurance. Following Dean's advice regarding a majority vote for the public option and other portions of the bill would make a lot of sense.”

“You are missing one very important thing. The Senate bill, which I am completely against, by the way, is not the final bill. IF the Senate bill passes it will then go into committee along with the House bill and the two will be reconciled. That's the bill that will go to Obama.”

“This fails to take into account the rise in premiums that will come about over pre-existing conditions - as much as 50%, and the rise in premiums for older people. And those pre-existing conditions don't have to be major conditions in order for the insurance companies to raise premiums. A history of high blood pressure, depression, even mild hypothyroidism will be grounds to gouge the consumer.

In addition, Aetna recently announced that they would be raising rates in 2010 because the company's profits were down - not just to offset inflation. Considering the power insurance companies will have over people under the Senate bill's mandate, adjusting for inflation does not seem like the most reliable predictor.”

Deja Vu: Haddad Is Another Beltran

Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 11:04:40 in Los Angeles

“As I was reading this I thought back to the case of the daycare workers in Bakersfield that were charged with the sexual abuse of the children in their care and the demonization of these people over very shaky evidence. At the time, I thought the evidence sounded like somthing out of a bad B movie, I still do. But there were more people who were not only willing but, seemingly, anxious to believe the totally over-the-top tales. Years later, most of the children have recanted their stories and the methods used to elicit those stories have been called into question by expert after expert.

Now, it seems that one extreme has led to the other. Instead of demonizing a person without clear evidence, people are refusing to accept any possibility of guilt no matter how much evidence they are presented with. I look forward to the day when people can show some objectivity and restraint instead of immediately freaking out with an extreme opinion that lacks any basis in fact.”
