“I see plenty of reasons why Americans can not have single payer right now. Most of them are dollar bills, the rest are uninformed, ignorant voters who will believe anything the people collecting those dollar bills tell them as long as they play to the fear and hatred of those voters.

Change like this does not come overnight.”

Patriot86 replied on Dec 20, 2009 at 19:57:09

“This bill does not change anything for Americans we still have to buy insurance from corrupt insurance cartels...oh wait there is a change now we are mandated to buy this garbage and will face stiff financial and possibly criminal penalties if we don't...we were handed over to the insurance cartel on a silver platter by our elected officials...by DEMOCRATS . Who would have ever believed they would do this.”

“It is pretty clear who the winners in this debate are...the health insurance companies..this will not be effective marginally or any other way...it will require people buy overpriced insurance that they can not afford and then when they can't here come the fines and possibly jail. This bill is a disgrace and an insult to all of us who worked our tails off to elect Democrats this year. I am bitterly disappointed and the glass is half full argument is untrue...there is nothing in this bill for Americans. Do you think insurance stocks would be up so high if they did not believe this bill was a lovely Christmas gift to them and a knife in the back to us fools who actually believe pres. Obama enough to work our hearts out for him?”

“Yes, the majority of people enrolled in Medicare are white. That's because there are more white seniors than there are black or hispanic seniors. It's not because Medicare is denied to anyone but white people.

It's very true that there are still very serious issues in this country regarding race. But don't blow it out of proportion with false reasoning.”

“I think that people who believed that we would get strong healthcare reform the first time around were living in a dream world. It has been obvious from day one of Obama's Presidency that the Republicans would oppose everything that he put forward regardless of the idea or the goal. The fact that they voted against funding the military currently on the ground proves this point beyond a shadow of a doubt.

And it has been obvious from day one that big business interests were going to fight this tooth and nail, buying every vote, Republican and Democrat, that they could, regardless of the cost.

The fact that we have any bill left at all is a miracle and a testament to the few fighters in the Democratic party who still believe in this project.

I believe that this bill can be effective, if only minimally. Once it is in place it will be a stepping stone for new provisions, new regulations and new addtions and, eventually, single payer. Without it, there is no hope for decades of any kind of relief for the American people.”

“So much corporate power has been able to influence our government since the Reagan years, that our very democracy is a feeble relic of what it used to be. Yes, it is almost a miracle that any healthcare bill has been passed at all, considering the vast wealth of the medical insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industries have virtually attacked Washington with their lobbyists.
One can only hope that gradually, step-by-step, health care reform and even our own democracy itself, will eventually be given to the people.”

Talmageb replied on Dec 20, 2009 at 19:23:30

“I hear this same tired diatribe from people over and over again. Social security and Medicare were expanded we can do the same thing with Health Care Reform. The reason that approach is flawed is simply that all of those bills extended rights, privileges, and guarantees to citizens.

While this bill has some basic regulations (though I am skeptical they will be effectively enforced...see every other piece of regulation that is supposedly enforced by the federal government) there is no right to health care extended. There is no guarantee to be treated appropriately as a citizen. What we have is a huge unenforceable bill that mandates that Americans buy insurance from corrupt corporate cartels or suffer hefty tax penalties. There is no extension on which to expand so why pass this bill? If there were a modest public option, or a trigger, or a medicare expansion...I could see the point. But this is just a bad bill. Poorly thought poorly drafted and poorly executed.

in June 2003, Obama said: “I happen to be a proponent of a single-payer health care program. I see no reason why the US cannot provide basic health insurance to everybody. A single-payer health care plan, a universal health care plan. And that’s what I’d like to see.“”

Waltfl replied on Dec 20, 2009 at 19:15:38

“You think we are living in a dream-world because Americans, whose treasury funds Israel's universal health-system, hoped to get what other civilized nations successfully apply? It's a stepping stone? Do you expect Democrats picking up seats in 2010 after this piece has passed?

Public option was not brought down by Senate-Republicans, it was sabotaged by corporate Democrats, who could not be brought in line, because there is a leadership problem in the democratic party.

I have to say, Republicans have their party in check. Even in the minority they walk straight. Their goals are possession of power and money, nothing more. Still, for 8 years it was: Dubya gets what Dubya wants. Period. If you dared to go against the President, you got crucified.

Reid needs to get his party in line, and Obama needs to learn quickly, or it's going to get ugly in 2010 and 2012.”

“I can't imagine that people don't take into consideration the fact that the Republicans and to a degree Moderates, would never agree with fundamental change in anything. Obama, like all of us, like me as a mother, homeowner, professional, has to deal with the world as he finds it; deal with the people as they exist and in the process, extract from them the best possible outcome.
I am comfortable with that.
We need to get this pass now and little by little, out think the opposition as time goes on. As someone said down below, attach changes to other bills as they come up. I fully believe that there is hardly a straight line to a solution. Obama's finest quality is his ability to out think and out maneuver his opponents. He'll do it. He's a closer.”

At this point I'm not about to get my hopes up for much but I'm also not going to start blaming Obama for Baucus's screwed up bill. Not yet, anyway.

What I have done is let him and my Senators know how I feel about this bill - in no uncertain terms.”
