“She's up against some very deep pockets. Why else would cell carriers have been overcharging us for voice and sms traffic for so many years?

But then, if what I've been hearing about Google is true, the predominant cell carriers have a hell of a lot to worry about. Supposedly HTC is building an Android based phone for Google and they're planning something big. Buy the handset, don't pay month to month for service, or extremely cheap service plans.”

“It's not just in airports. This is the concept of the up-sell. I note the Walgreens near me has 'specials' at the register that they HAVE to offer. It's usually some kind of candy or cookie treat but still, it's irritating.

Same is true when dealing with broadband and cable tv providers, can we up-sell you to this package that is going to cost you $20 a month more. I know people who are paying upwards of $140 a month for phone, cable, and 2 digital tv boxes. Me, I ditched the CATV side and the phone service comes through different VoIP providers. $85 a month total. With net video I'm not missing much.”

President Obama and Gay Rights: Forgetting the Lessons of the Campaign

Commented Nov 05, 2009 at 16:41:29 in Politics

“I am all for holding Obama's feet to the fire. Don't go saying you're a fierce advocate and then backpedal. And quite honestly I'm not very please with the Democratic party over these past years. It's become increasingly more apparent that they're bought and paid for, just like the Republicans.

Lets dump our money into a NEW political party that isn't beholden to the corporate interests. Then maybe we can make some progress.”

Not another dime to the Dems for me with the exception of the odd progressive candidate who proves to me that they are not a coporate sell-out and really will represent ME, a tree-hugging, anti-war, pro-education, anti-television, gay, vegetarian, social liberal, fiscal conservative, who appreciates the role of socialism in meeting people's needs.”

Mr. President, Will You Lead Us to Greatness in Space?

Commented Oct 24, 2009 at 22:45:49 in Technology

“Heavy lift is a must but lets toss some $$$ at VASIMR technology. You know, the one that is estimated to be able to get us to Mars withing 39 days instead of six or more months using standard lift vehicles. In fact the VASIMR technology could be used for 120 day missions to what, Europa, Io, et al. Wouldn't that be grand.”

ancientmarinader replied on Oct 25, 2009 at 01:47:02

“Vasimir is great but to get that 39 day trip to mars, you'll need a nuclear reactor to power it. To date only the russians have put nuclear reactors in space. We might have trouble doing that due to the anti-nuclear activists.

I read there is some effort to use a solar powered vasimir to help boost ISS but I'm not sure if there will be enough remaining shuttle flights to get it up.”

“Yeah but where did those who called themselves Republican go to? That's the increase in independents. Which in one respect is good.

Here in RI a new party is rising up, it calls itself the Moderate Party of Rhode Island. They pretty much adopt a liberal social view, and a conservative business view.

Me, I'd like to see about 12 parties. Then it would force the politicians to build coalitions as well as deter the influence of business on government. Right now with just two parties (or three) it's easy to buy favor. You just fund everyone. But spread it out and it become impractical.”

“Now this is a surprise. Why? Didn't they try to toughen up the bankruptcy procedures because too many people were filing? So they added in the credit counseling mess. That's turned out well.

Yet we still have record bankruptcies.

But what annoys me most about the reform act is that they started treating unsecured debt as secured debt. That's a serious no-no.”

Protea32 replied on Oct 03, 2009 at 12:18:55

“"So they added in the credit counseling mess. That's turned out well. "

Not sure about that. I know there are many, many providers for the counseling. The one I went through did a really good job of showing the benefits of a credit free life, and explaining games banks play (constantly referred to as 'the sharks'). The banks can't be real happy about that. They may come to regret the 'reforms' in a few years when they decide that too many people are telling them to take their loans and plastic cards and go away. Not to mention the folks with good credit that are going cash and carry.
Could a 'credit strike' work? What happens when the banks want to lend and nobody wants to borrow?”

“Very good analysis of what is going on in the United States at the moment. I want the Democratic party to slide left and stop trying to be just like the Republicans.

But I know that will never happen. Or at least it won't happen until we assert ourselves as citizens and once and for all tell the corporations that we are not theirs to control.

You really want to modify a constitution, insert these words in the 14th Amendment "These rights do not apply to corporations." Seven simple words but it would change the whole political environment.

We can do it, the Obama camp showed us how with one of the best fund raising machines ever. Except we the people do our own, and get our own people obligated to us alone into office. We can do it, and we'll have to pay for it but the payoff is immeasurable.”

“The boyfriend of a friend of mine thinks that allowing gay people to marry will make his taxes go up.

It's that type of thinking that's pushed by the religious wingnuts. That taxes will go up, that the children will be irreparably harmed if they find out it's ok if two men or two women can marry, etc. The anti gay marriage bigots are harping on those issues alone.

The reality is, none of their straight constituency has felt any harm from gay people getting married.

And the anti-gay marriage bigots, it's the religious crowd that pulls the strings. They'll always complain about how it infringes their religious rights. The thing is every same sex marriage bill or judicial decision has carved out exclusions for religious institutions so that they won't be getting hit with lawsuits if they refuse to marry a gay couple.

It's all ridiculous because here's what is happening. Little by little churches are learning that you attract more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. And the Catholic leadership needs to be particularly careful since they are very out of sync with much of their congregation.”

Democracy can work in Persia, but the U.S. cannot force it to happen. It has to come from the people and that surely seems to be the case in Iran.”

“I'm going to go all Freakonomics on you here. He posited that the reduction in crime in the 90's had to do with the legalization of abortion in the 1970's. Less people in poverty, less crime.

And what did neo-cons do in the 1980's and beyond, but restrict abortion even further. So we're going to see an uptick in crime, mark my words.”

rexx18 replied on Sep 05, 2009 at 15:32:13

“The followup to Freakonomics was errors in his formulas and some debunking of his idea; he himself blogged on the matter and admitted to the error and that it weakened his concept. Not to mention that the homicide rate for teens aged 14-17 tripled in the late 1980s and climbed up through the early to mid 1990s (even though abortion was legalized for over 25 years).

As for the "neo cons"...whatever. One doesn't have to be a neo-con to think that killing unborn babies is a bad thing.

As for an uptick in crime---well, abortion is still legal. You are going to see an uptick because the economy is in the toilet and the youth of today expect everything to be free. They expect free music downloads and handouts from the government.”

As a baby I'd scare the crap out of my mother. I'd spike high fevers, or sleep for days. Off to the doctor. Weird birthmark, doctors, specialists to find out its nothing. Frequent ear infections, strep throat a bunch of times up into my early 20's, etc.

Luckily my parents had health insurance. As an adult I've rung up about $8,000 in visits, scans, etc. for recurring ear issues. Thankfully at the time I had a generous state provided insurance plan.

But now I'm running my own business and I want a public option available if only to keep the over 1,800 insurance providers in the country honest.”
