Except that this kind of intimidation is regularly visited on the gay community without Newt raising a peep.
But you're right that the knee-jerkers can't seem to understand that their White Knight Henrik could be horribly wrong and just simply admit it and move the heck on.”

“I don't see how you are responding to what I said. It is not naive to point out that one of your team mates just ran the ball back into their own end zone. Try viewing the video from the point of view of the average American and honestly ask yourself how you think Hertzberg really came off.”

“I'm not a rightist, I'm a leftist. But even leftists have to be responsible in how they write. It is not a "minor mistake" to delete what propels your opponents' argument and then say there is nothing propelling his argument.
And Hertzberg could've dealt with it so easily! He could've pointed out that to compare the acts of a few queer hot-heads with the violence visited on gays every day of the week is such a sick and pathetic argument. But Herzberg was just too lazy and glib to make this easy point.”

“Here is the relevant part of what Hertzberg said http://www.newyorker.com/talk/comment/2008/12/01/081201taco_talk_hertzbergg):
"Like a polluted swamp, anti-gay bigotry is likely to get thicker and more toxic as it dries up. Viciousness meets viscousness. “Look,” Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker, said the other day (on the air, to Bill O’Reilly), “I think there is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us, is prepared to use violence. . . . I think that it is a very dangerous threat to anybody who believes in traditional religion. And I think if you believe in historic Christianity, you have to confront the fact.” For diversity’s sake, he added that “the historic version of Islam” and “the historic version of Judaism” are likewise menaced—which is natural, given that gay, secular, fascist values are “the opposite of what you’re taught in Sunday school.”"
Hertzberg left out the context of (alleged) violence. This was dishonest of him and O'Reilly called him out on it.
Also, he was unable to tell O'Reilly's guys that he had actually seen the segment. This made him look bad.
I podcast Hertzberg, and I like him. But he has a tendency to be glib, and this was an instance of this.
O'Reilly's attack was quite effective to those who don't live in the left/liberal echo chamber. It should be a warning to liberals to stop preaching to the choir.”

“Calling their opponent "dishonest" is fast becoming a favorite tactic of the right for some minor mistake. It is laughable in view of the fact that gops are notoriously dishonest about anything that will bolster their point.”

LexLuthier replied on Dec 05, 2008 at 19:11:53

“Are you that naive? Newt is definitely up to something. "Drill here, drill now, pay less." Now this. He is doing what he did at the beginning of his career; he is appealing to the lowest common denominator and hoping to ride their indignation into, into, sheesh, I don't know what. Watch this guy. He is totally without principles and will do anything to taste power.”

“I am not claiming Krugman had a conflict on interest and maybe I should have made this more clear. I am claiming that Krugman is naive about the nature of crony capitalism and the government's tendency to make economic problems worse by putting the interests of the investors and management over the taxpayers and health of the economy.

I quote Krugman in the "Great Unraveling":

"I was no more perceptive than anyone else; during the bull market years [of the late 1990s] some people did send me letters claiming that major corporations were cooking their books, but - to my great regret - I ignored them. However, when Enron - the most celebrated company of its time, lauded as the very model of a modern business enterprise - blew up, I immediately saw the implications: if such a famous and celebrated company could have been a Ponzi scheme, it was very unlikely that the rest of U.S. business was squeaky clean. In fact, it quickly became clear, the bubble years were both the cause and effect of an epidemic of corporate malfeasance."”

“OK, tell me if I missed something.
She is pro-life but does not favor outlawing abortion. Didn't I just hear her say that?
She wriggled around the question of the morning after pill until the reporter forced her to answer it.
She believes in teaching evolution as an established fact. But didn't she say earlier that it should be taught alongside creationism? If I believe that modern chemistry is an established science, do I advocate teaching about phlogiston?
The reporter could have nailed Palin better if she'd carried around some of her earlier quotations.
Is Palin stupid or devious or a stupid person being devious?
I used to be afraid of Palin. But she's just the gift that keeps on giving.”

Kerris replied on Oct 01, 2008 at 03:42:03

“To be fair and not rabidly partisan, looking at her actual record of what she believes vs what she has been willing to do once in power, Palin has shown that while she is willing to raise issues ("why is that book there in my library?") she has been hands off in really making moves to get a dirty job done (banning the books). She ran for gov on her rabid pro-life platform, but has not tried to do one jot to actually implement a platform of changes... I think she is a bit more ambitious than she is "principled" in that sense and would not do those things that would nudge her out of favour, even if saying them when she is trying to get elected gets her votes.

What would make her scary is if the Repub base gets more and more powerful and she realises that doing something like reversing Roe v Wade would be to her advantage politically as well as religiously... then she would run with it. But if it caused her power to slip (i.e., if liberals and independents grew some balls and stopped cowering in front of the religious right each time they rear their nasty heads) she seems to be the kind of politcian who would see where the wind blows. Power trumping principle when it counts in her favour, I guess.”

Was the good Obama did for his community more important than the others on the board? Did Ayers and Obama hang out together plotting against the government? Did Obama's views change significantly toward overthrow of the government as a result of listening to these people?

I will stay away from the, "Well your guy..." stuff which is just as bad.

“Well, it's a wee bit more complicated than than.
The Left knew no more about Pol Pot's intentions than the Cambodian people as a whole, who were just as surprised as the rest of the world when they were ordered deported from the cities to the countryside. When the atrocities began, the Left as a whole dropped him like a hot potato, with the exception of Maoist cults like the Revolutionary Communist Party.
But it was the Reagan administration which supported Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge after the Vietnamese (who I guess are part of the Left which was supporting Pol Pot... huh?) threw him out.
So: The Left supported Pol Pot when he was an unknown resisting a brutal air war against the Khmer people.
The Right supported Pol Pot after the world knew what he was made of.
Oh, and...
There was the American secret bombing of Cambodia. A quarter of a million tons of bombs dropped on a peasant society. Two million peasants displaced and hundreds of thousands (exact number disputed) killed, arguably driving the Khmer Rouge into more extreme positions. ("Journalist William Shawcross and Cambodia specialists Milton Osborne, David P. Chandler and Ben Kiernan argued that the bombing drove peasants to join the Khmer Rouge. Chandler writes that the bombing provided "the psychological ingredients of a violent, vengeful and unrelenting social revolution.""--Wikipedia) Prince Sihanouk was no friend of mine, but if we'd left him in power, none of this would have happened.”
