How to Talk to Your Daughter About Her Body

Commented Aug 13, 2013 at 10:08:31 in Parents

“I can understand that the negative comments that parents can make are incomprehensibly damaging, but I don't see how the answer is to say nothing. I feel that, by saying nothing, you allow those who ARE saying something (media & friends) be the only voice she hears and never your loving, encouraging, supporting, unconditional voice of acceptance of her body. A mother who has built up love & trust can say to her daughter, "I noticed you look like you've gained/lost a little weight. Is everything ok? Are you feeling ok? Is there something bothering you that we can talk about?" and cause no damage to self esteem b/c she is going to the root of what shapes our image (and remember: there is already built in trust - that takes a long time to do, so let's start early!). I watched the small video blurb and it seems like this post was an over-reaction to the unfortunately large amounts of parents w/ hurtful comments to their daughters. I don't think the answer is to go to the other extreme pretend you don't notice your child's appearance by never mentioning it. It's my opinion that, in this situation, it's wiser to choose words carefully than to choose no words at all.”
