“It is troubling that in this country we give food stamps to working Americans. This creates confusion as to who is being supported with public funds.

When an employer pays a full-time adult worker so little money that his family cannot eat, we should view relief afforded to the worker not as welfare to the individual but as welfare to the corporation.

Honestly, what kind of s!ck tw!sted society strategically pays people a wage that is inconsistent with Western standards of human decency and then stigmatizes those people for being on the dole?”

yemaya replied on Nov 29, 2009 at 16:50:48

“Our wages have been stagnant but everything else rose. False economy. People that have no disposable income cannot support a capitalistic system, simple. The attack on unions and pro business policies of the last 30 years or so led to this.”

“The left's idea of activism is to refrain from shopping for a day?

How about a total reorientation of our consumerist mentality and a commitment to work fewer hours, spend less money, and spend more time with friends, exercising, enjoying nature, reading etc.?

How about congregating on K Street and in front of the Capitol until Congress gets the message that corporate interests are overrepresented in our political culture?

How about doing anything that requires real passion, real commitment, real vision?

What do you say, fellow lefties?”

hark replied on Nov 27, 2009 at 10:05:08

“How about building the 21st century, instead of consuming what's left of the 20th?

How about ending these wasteful wars that are dragging us down?

We desperately need a solution to the energy problem, and the fact that 6.5 billion people are now competing for scant world resources. Our standard of living is going to decline inexorably as global capitalism seeks out the cheapest labor and opens up markets in the undeveloped world. We are being swept out to sea by this tide, and doing nothing about it.”
