“Maybe if I was Evangelical Christian and wanted Government in my bedroom maybe I would be a Conservative also.
But I am not Evangelical and my religion is not on there favorite friend list either. So Why would I want to vote for one of those peope that would cause MY life to be a living H*** in the future.
RELIGION has NO place in politics and all those that flaunt they are this that or the other thing. Media reporting that this will be the first this of that Religion to be a whatever.
That is now what our Government is supposed to be about. It is supposed to be about what is best for ALL our Citizen and not the chosen few of the particular Religion that happens to be in power.
Open your eyes and actually see what direction we are headed into.
I am building a bunker and starting my own Country if this crap keeps up!”
“I knew when the first Walmat opened my area it was going to kill small business. It slowly happend. Then I moved to RURAL Maine and saw the FULL effect of what Bog Box stores that offer the lowest priced stuff.
They put those other options for us out of business and now the prices at Walmart have gone higher. So you have to pay that if you live in the Boonies like I do. There are NO other options at all. We do not even have a big Walmart. just what is called a "Community Walmart" and they reduced much of the other stuff to put in Frozen food cases to sell up precessed foods to put the one Hannafords Suppermarket out of business. I have to go the this Walmat since by the time I drive the 30 miles to get there I end up having to drive 60 miles in the opposite direction to get the item I really needed. And that broke the first time I used it.. Cheap can opener made in China.
Olympia and Susan have worked hard for Small Businesses in My State of Maine!”
“Do not count you chickens before they are hatched. Not all of Maine is liberal as is alway implied. The upper half is much more conservative and has much more in common with the bible belt then you may think.
There is more to Maine the lobster and a rocky shoreline.
Deep woods full of hardworking people stuggling to make a living (not to mention the Black flies are horrible too).”
“As an Indepentent voter, I was a little concerned when I moved to Maine with the 2 GOP Senators that represented the Maine people.
What I have found is that both of the GOP Senators actually listen to the people of the State of Maine and put forth legislation that is in the best interest of the people of Maine.
I did not see that in my former State of CT at all.
There once elected you usually did not see them again till the next election.
However Olympia and Susan both keep us well informed on issues (if you chose to be so informed...as I like to be). I think Olympia has served the people of Maine and deserves much praise for her hard work.
I do not like that term RINO, to be a republican does not mean that you have to be HARD RIGHT. There are many many Republicans out there that are in the middle and there is not a thing wrong with being in the middle at all.
Three Cheers for common sense politicans we need more of them!”
beherenow54 on Feb 28, 2012 at 18:30:57
“You're quite right, you don't have to be hard right, or hard left, to be good for the country. You shouldn't be, actually. The middle is where most of America lives. It's too bad she's leaving.”
cindync on Feb 28, 2012 at 18:28:32
“you are correct. the repub party has no middle anymore. it is too bad, because govenment needs a thoughtful, respectful dialog from differing perspectives to work properly. this climate now is toxic for everyone.”
cruisedoc on Feb 28, 2012 at 18:28:17
“Snowe is a VERY bright women if you listen to her. I too find RINO (and DINO) derogatory. A senator is elected to rep their constituency - their state ....not to toe the party line.
As a dem (at the time) I was appalled at senators from states that oppsed the HC bill by 2/3, voted for the bill in spite of their constituency.”
cptbfhrt on Feb 28, 2012 at 18:26:02
“Really, republicans in the middle? I've been listening but their silence is deafening.”
“The power of a religion of any type is not to the benefit of the masses of people. Those Left Behind books give a snapshot of what could happen with one person one religion one nation. Not a good thought at all.
Religion has no place in politics at all. I am not an Athiest if that is what you are thinking. No I am a person that believes in what America stands for.”
“A Pagan is not a hippy or a bunch of children. It is a religion and is older then Christianity!”
Tsvi1 on Dec 25, 2011 at 06:58:38
“As a history student that is plain wrong. The neo-Pagens pull some things from ancient pagens but there is no continuation between the two. The beliefs and rituals of modern paganism aren't related to those of old pagens in general.
Its the same with the Jewish Kabbalah, they claim to start with Abraham but they were invented in the 1400s.
Please people, be intellectualy honest. There is no problem about admitting that your religion is made up, they all are. As long as it encompasses your moral/metaphysical beliefs and values thats all that matters.”
Gary St Lawrence on Dec 24, 2011 at 10:53:43
“But ... how can that be?!? Christianity has ALWAYS been around, forever.
And the entire world is only 6,000 years old anyway. That's when the Christian god created it. So how could anything be older than that?
[sarcasm mode off]”

“its the way of life that is returning very soon...the judeo-christian "blip on the screen" is almost washed away at this point. 3000 years in the dark age....over soon.”
“England like to draw maps and place the differing ethnic/religous groups in an area to cut down on the fighting that was always going on. So when the Colonial period ended the middle east was all cut up into the countries we now as Iraq, Egypt etc. However there was another problem.
After WWII there were millions of Jewish people with no homes, families etc. All they had was the promise by God of a Homeland Isreal. So the English made it for them.
But God was aways punishing the Jewish people and taking away there country, and they ended up all over the world as a result of not following God wishes. That is in the Bible to.
So was it right of England to carve a Country for the Jewish people, maybe God still does not think the deserve it yet.
But who am I to say what is real or not.”
“Hey my ancesters were from the original French Settlers in Canada. They were here longer then the English that settled what is Mass and VA.
But the Indians were here before us. And in Washington they tell the Indians if they are or were a recognized tribe or not. I have even seen them tell a tribe that they had died out hundreds of years ago.
So those poiticians like to pick and chose what is made up or not...no facts will change their minds.”
“I would like to find out what the reason for becoming a Catholic really are. There must be some big time financial gain there. He always has a motive. I will always remember him standing on the steps of the Capital telling us about the "Contract with America". I did not vote for that and there was nothing in it that would benefit middle class me. I have not liked him ever since.
Apparently many in this Country felt like I did and voted the idiots all out.
So now those corrupt people have figured out a way to get back into office and not get any votes from us. That is the direction we have gotten into now.
The question is How Do We Get OUR VOTE Power back from the Lobbiest that own the politicians? Since we do not have the money of the lobby groups our issues and concern fall on deaf ears. This is what the Framers of the Constitution were afraid of. an Elitist Govenment taking care of the needs of the priveliged few. And the Politicians are connected by blood back to the Mayflower or some other President (even the Royal Family in England). So based on that we have to vote on them having the right to power through blood lines.
I do not think that was the intent of the Framers either.”
“I have been doing rice so far. I have to learn about the other grains and beans yet. Also I have been looking for metal cans for storage (the mice and other animals get into even the hardest plastic containers. I have been using the old storage room above the garage for food storage (in the event of a EMP or if 12/21/2012 is the end of life as we know it who knows)”
“The paper is Mon-Sat, and the coupons are unimpressive up here in the woods. I tried to get some deals with online stuff. But there is nothing really offered in this part of Maine. Things were different in the other State I used to live in. Here the options for shopping are crap and crappier.
No doubling here at all. And Who wants to buy 10-15 cans of soup and get some 15 cents off. The store brand is a better deal.....except for the increased salt content.
But for the most part I buy 1/2 a cow and split that with a friend to cut on the meat for a good long while. Fresh fruit and Veg are the next big thing on my list. I try to stay away from processed foods totally.
Mostly you have to try a product till you find one that works for you and is versitile. Then stick with it. It works when it comes to toilet paper.
I remember living in Germany and having to go to the market for toilet paper. It was hard and corrigated recyled paper and rough on the back side! But it worked better then newspaper! (Late 1960's this was)”
“Since I cut out buying a newspaper. I get no coupons that way. The ones you get on line are mostly worthless since I do not use those products. Also the way the coupons are marketed with expire dates of about 2 weeks is not great either.
Fixed income you buy store brand most of the time. Can't afford the names.”
Jeanette DeBella Bogue on Dec 11, 2011 at 09:06:29
“I shop using online coupons, and my store loyalty card. No coupons from newspapers, and I am saving 25% on my groceries.”

“Bulk foods can be super cheap too, if they're available in your area - brown rice, beans, split peas, oats, etc. are all really healthy and inexpensive.”

“You can buy the Sunday paper (the one with coupons) for under $2.”
“You are right, It has nothing to do with free speech, just dollars and (no sense)! You can destroy a company with a low rating. It is a business like any other and if you pay enough, just like polls. Depending on how you read them or they are presented can say whatever you want them to say! Not a good indicator when you think about it!”
“this is just sickening. What do they say about murders.....they start with killing small animals then work their way up to killing people.
The people involved have some serious issues. A little slap on the hand and a chuckle is not the correct response.”
“Thank you for pointing that out for me. I never thought of it in that light. Good point. Just be happy to give the gift from your heart. Receiving a gift of thanks should not be the object of the giving.
Just like an anonomous gift that you secretly give someone without them knowing it. You may or maynot see the result. But just doing a "good service" should make you feel good.
That makes me feel better.”
“Oh how I miss the Blue Laws and business closed on Sundays.
One of the sickening aspects of all this commercialness is that Big ticket things get the oohs and ahs.
I remember making a Full size Afghan for my Mom one year. It took lots of time and effort to make it perfect. The material also had a cost. When Mom recieved it ...she was like looking for the next gift to open. No thank you or this is beautiful of how long it too to make it. I could have gone an bought some flimsy piece that would fall appart in the first wash. She did not care.
Gone are the simple pleasures. like that Christmas story of the wife who cut her hair to buy a watch chain for her husband .....and he sold his watch to buy her a beautiful hair comb. In the end they gave up something precious to buy something to make the other happy. Isn't that what the season is about . Doing onto others without thinking of what you get in return!”
southingtonian on Nov 21, 2011 at 07:58:31
“I remember those days, too. The street were so quiet, we could rollerskate up and down the hill, and out onto the main thoroughfare with no interference.”
Kristin Talbott on Nov 20, 2011 at 18:17:26
“I appreciated the spirit of your post enough to fave it.
However, if you're truly not thinking of what you're going to get in return, even your Mom failing to thank you for the Afghan wouldn't have bothered you.”
“Well, I have no money and only use my plastic for important things. Unfortunately Christmas Gifts are not on my list this year, just like last year and the year before. Just keeping the house warm and food on the table. Gizmos I do not need. But I could use some spare cash to get my cats to the vet for their check ups.”
“What gives the Lobbiest so much clout. Oh is it campaign contributions to keep these morons in office. It is ashame that the ordinary people do not have the funds to pay lobbiest. But that is not how this Government is suppose to work. The electorate has lost its voice to greed and slefish ambitions.”
“You will be hard pressed to find any wild life in my area. I own about 200 acres and can walk for hours and maybe see a crow or two. They have hunted and cut the trees that provice food and shelter for wood to the demise of the animals. Have not even seen a preditor in 8 years. The last Moose was along the highway south of me. But in this area zip. Funny how many people always remember the hunting up here.
Maybe one of them was part of a group that slaughtered about 25 deer for the boot straps (prime meat area on the deer). that was all they took and left the remains that could have feed many people to rot. Oh this hunt was out of season and at night while they were all in there eating area. Great hunters. And they wonder why there is not deer in the area!”
“I just love how many politicians love to reduce services or taxes. And in the next breath create some new Dept that cost that saving that there could have been.
Example in CT. The DEM Gov Malloy was just as bad as any GOP Gov and attacked the State workers and managed to get some savings. Then he went and hired the Former Chancelor of the U of Maine to head up a NEW dept. This dept would coordinate the services of the Community Colleges, and Univ in the State Education system.
Was that really needed or just some fluff.
Here in Maine the GOP/Tea Gov has asked the people in high learning Schools to contact their Legislators so that they would follow his proposed spending cuts to social service. In Exchange he would not cut Spending to the University System.
It is like taking food from the mouths of babies to feed someone that already has a full plate of food. Makes no sense at all.”
“In this day (in my area) I see people undercut eachother for a job to the point that the normal wages here are min or (under the table below min). People offer that they will do more for less.
You can not go to an employer and ask for a raise (that you may deserve) for fear that your position is eliminated (mostly because you are older, have been there longer and get paid more). Then they hire some young person at half your wages with a new title doing exactly the same job.
Or you notice that new people are getting hired at hire rates while you have topped out at the highest step. The new people soon are making more money then you and you have nothing to say about it.
So if you get rid of the Unions, place people in positions to influence the outcome of various boards favorable to the companies, people will have not voice. We will become no better then some illegal hiding in some back room making peanuts at the whim of the employer. The Return of the Company with all the Company owned food, housing, etc to eat at what you do earn.”
“This State does not have a Right to work and there are few Unions here. The pay stinks and there are almost no retirement programs unless you happen to work at a Mill with a Union. But even that is not an absolute.
Right to Work will not have businesses providing retirement and benefit programs. The Competition in this world is the Repeal of NAFTA and all trade agreements that have encouraged companies to make products cheaply in other Countries.
I like the loophole that Senator Susan Collins just closed to help Maine Shoe Businesses. Shoes being made overseas were made with a piece of textile (fabric) included in the sole of the shoe. This way they could import them at the cheaper textile tariff rate rather then the rate that the shoes should have been. This enable to undercut the cost of the shoe and would have continued to hurt the American Shoe industry.
The only thing we are competing for is jobs for Americans in America. As long as companies continue to use loopholes in current laws to increase there profit of the shareholder, we are lost. It has nothing to do with right to work that is just an excuse to pay American workers poverty wages with no benefits. Good Bye Middle Class.”
“I remember seeing first hand how a company hires some big name Union Busting Organization. They pay them the big buck no matter the cost.
All the money spent on daily mailing of potential consequences it you Unionize letters. Flooding the mailboxs. Then the Company workers that were on Salary were organized to go onto the picket line and incite some problems so that it would look like the Union Organizers started it. It was sickening. They would hire the same type of company whenever the contract was up for renegotiation.
They did not Negotiate in Good Faith at all.
As for Union Thugs, that is just someones idea that there is some stranger that is the Union. A Union is made up of your co-workers all working togather for the betterment of your employment. The leadership may be from away but the core of the Group is your co-workers not some Union Thugs that you do not know.
If your co workers happen to be Thugs then maybe you are represented by Thugs. But mostly they are people like you and me that want to earn a good living and put food on the table. What is wrong with that.”

“Fanned. The USA is veering closer and closer to a plutocratic state wherein the very few control the vast majority of resources and the rest are left with the scraps atop the dung heap. And the saddest part is that the few have learned how to persuade the many that this is the best of all possible worlds. Anti-unionism is a meme that has grown up in my lifetime. But was it partly because unions became corrupt and no longer worked for the joint prosperity of owners and workers? I'm sure that happened, because human beings are not perfect and think first and foremost of their own welfare and comfort, but the ideal union should not be decried and disrespected by the potential union members who thus could raise themselves into a more equal negotiating position with the owners.”
