Americans Are Still Delusional About House Prices

Truthosaurus replied on Oct 12, 2009 at 17:05:59

“Good point. One can still end up with "low life" neighbors even after purchasing a house, and then it can be a lot harder to sell than to leave a rental. But at least for us, the low lifes are no longer living directly underneath our floor:)”

“You are lying about the cost of healthy food. A box of tofu is about $2 and a bag of rice about the same. Today I bought 10 pears for $3. You can eat healthy food if you want to. You clearly don't want to.”

“Rice is a terrible food. very high on the glycemic index. Death for diabetics like me”

jmby replied on Oct 10, 2009 at 22:20:44

“That statement is plain wrong. A box of spaghetti in my local Kroger is .99. A pound of apples is 3.99. Do you live in the inner city? If you do, then you know that a) there are no healthy food stores in most inner city neighborhoods and b) the cost of food at those stores is often much higher than the stores in the suburbs. I have always lived my adult life inside a city, and except for New York, Chicago and a couple of other large metropolitan areas, there are no grocery stores within downtown limits. Most cities of 200,000 or thereabouts don't have them. Unless you own a car, which is the case with many lower-income families, getting fresh veggies, fruits, local milk, etc. is quite difficult. Try catching a city bus into the suburbs to get to Safeway, then carry those groceries home. The local grocery chain that opened in our city specifically promised not to charge more than grocery stores outside the city, and then did just the opposite. On top of that, the local bodegas in our inner city area have out of date food on the shelves. I challenge you to find a healthy food market in your city's inner city area. Better yet, shop at the stores that are there for one week and see what you end up eating.”

“Thank you. Flu vaccines seem like nothing more than a revenue stream for whoever makes the vaccine. I keep my immune system in tip-top shape by eating well and getting enough sleep. If I do catch a virus, which is rare, I take care of myself and it's gone in a couple of days.”

The Measure of Obama's Presidency

Commented Jun 13, 2009 at 01:25:18 in Politics

“I agree. Obama needs to swing for the fences and not worry about a second term. I shudder when I think back to the Clinton era. What a total waste of time. Clinton did nothing to advance the citizenry that voted for him. He rode on the wave of the computer/Internet and took credit for a lot that wasn't down to him. That man was a disaster. I hope Obama understands this. (I'm not seeing it yet.)”

RogerHWerner replied on Jun 13, 2009 at 02:02:40

“Clinton was a disaster but not because he was a bad president or a bad person. What he did was support the wrong agenda...he supported short term gain over long term productivity. He supported corporate backers over citizens. In the end the country has suffered and it will continue to suffer.”

The Venice Beach Stereotype in "I Love You, Man"

Commented Apr 07, 2009 at 13:37:00 in Living

“Talk about stereotypes. The California "like totally" speech has taken over in New York, and it now sounds almost as terrible as California (I grew up there and feel free to judge). When I hear an authentic New York accent these days, I smile and want to shake the person's hand.”

hartss replied on Apr 08, 2009 at 08:32:09

“Joye, have you actually VISITED New York any time in the last decade? The stereotypes you so callously mention above are largely vanquished to the trash heap of history. I travel all around the US for work, and must tell you that as much as I love to visit California, its population's attitude has become (generally) more aggressive and rude over the years, particularly relating to obnoxious, dangerous drivers and indifferent, rude restaurant service. Again, these are generalities, but I mention them for a reason.”

“Well said. Some very good ideas on your list. As an aside, I had the misfortune to take a ride in a Cadillac Escalade recently. The livery driver told me it got 9.2 miles to the gallon, which I thought was a stretch. And it was one of the most uncomfortable, bone-shaking rides I've ever had. An incredibly expensive, badly made dinosaur of a vehicle, the Cadillac Escalade is a perfect metaphor for the U.S. auto industry.”

Top 10 Reasons To Pardon A Turkey this Thanksgiving

Commented Nov 23, 2008 at 12:54:38 in Living

“I agree! I went vegetarian after looking at that sad bird on Thanksgiving in 1987. I think it's great that silly old Sarah Palin's turkey slaughtering video planted the seed of consciousness for lots of people. Factory farming is a cruel, filthy business. Bad for animals, bad for the environment, bad for people (read Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation" to get an inside view of how horribly workers in the beef industry are treated). I'm not judgmental about my friends who eat meat; I just think they don't know the full extent of the horror.”

cucumber replied on Nov 23, 2008 at 14:17:47

“Unfortunately, I don't really think the video had that effect. Take a look a the comments to that story here and around the web.

Just FYI, that also was not factory farming - that was a smaller farm. As horrible as that was, it's much, much worse on factory farms, where the vast majority of animals come from.

Best.”

“And don't forget how quickly and happily those patriotic American companies outsourced their jobs overseas when times were good so they could remain "competitive." This trickle-down business just doesn't wash. Big business has showed that it is just not interested in letting any of their money trickle anywhere that benefits anyone except those in the upscale service industries you talk about. How else could we have such obnoxious ballooning of executive pay in the last 20 years. McCain wimpers that raising taxes on the richest 1% will cost jobs. Does anyone really believe this nonsense? Am I sorry to see upscale businesses fall on harder times? Um, no. Not so much. The rich will continue to spend as they always have, and yes a whole lot more of their wealth will go to support the infrastructure, education, health care, etc. of the country that helped make them rich. That's how civilized countries operate. It sounds like you'd be happier living in a place like Mexico, Brazil or Zimbabwe, where there's a tiny wealthy elite and whole lot of very poor people.”

“Nice post. Yoga is for all ages and all levels of flexibility. I believe, however, that it is very important to find a truly qualified teacher, which is why I go for Iyengar. You're right. You can start out stiff as a board and watch yourself progress rapidly. And it's possible to get the spiritual benefits of yoga without having to put up with a lot of new age babble. I've been at it for about 4 years, and it has done wonders. I expect to be a yoga practitioner for the rest of my life.”

“That annoys me too. A lot. Especially when it's us godless, urban, elite libruls who generate the tax dollars that keep a lot of the "heartland" in business. Do you think Wyoming or Alaska (or any other sparsely populated state) could pave all its roads, look after its parklands, pay for Medicare, etc. without tax dollars from Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami and so on. We in the city know we need the "heartland" for agricultural products, etc. and we know that we have to live together. I don't understand why this small-town folksy thing has traction with anyone who lives in the modern world.”
