If you had read the story, it's very detailed and there were a no of preceding reports (in legitimate news sources) of the father complaining about how little money he had received for his daughter's part in the movie.

This man had also been complaining about the trust that had been set up for her when she becomes 18. It's clear that he is motivated by greed. So it's not that far fetched that this story may be true.”

There is a huge disparity between the rich and the poor. The extremely rich live in pockets of the island and seldom visit the rest of the island. However, there is a booming middle class.

Trinidad looks like it's overwhelmed by poverty, because the government doesn't properly invest in the development of the country. Most of the streets, gutters and rivers are filled with litter and trash. People are not required to maintain their residences. And crime is on the upswing, because government has been slow to address some of the social problems and invest in funding safety measures

But at the same time, Trinidad has a high literacy rate, low unemployment and a well educated population. Many of the people are well travelled and have higher rates of disposable income proportionally compared to those living in the US and a higher rate of savings.”
