“I actually think that's not a bad idea. Even if Dean doesn't win, he will force Obama to the left. Without any primary challenge, Obama will drift even more to the "center".”

cleveyucks replied on Dec 17, 2009 at 11:48:21

“I was thinking about this also. Here's an interesting scenario:

The Republican party in 2012 is able to fight back the teabagger idiots enough to run a not quite insane candidate like Mitt Romney. Palin in her quest to inflate her ego until it blocks the sun runs as an independent, destroying the Republicans. Dean could run as an independent and actuall have a chance of forming a legitimate progressive third party with a good chance of winning.

He would have to run head on and unapologetically excoriating Obama for selling out to corporate interests, abandoning the core principles of law and justice, and aiding and abetting war crimes by obstructing justice and failing to uphold his duties to prosecute torturers and war criminals. By 2012 more information on the crimes of the Bush administration should be in public view and Obama's obstructionism and extension of unconstitutional Bush policies will have eroded his cult of personality to the point where real progressives can no longer support him.

The progressives are the organizers and workers who got Obama elected against huge odds and if they focused their attention on a legitimate third party... who knows?”

Graywolf48 replied on Dec 17, 2009 at 11:27:48

“Obama has been right of center since day one because that's what Rahm Emanuel and the other DLC adherents have convinced him that's what the country wants. Obama needs to move left of center or he'll lose his base and maybe his re-election.”

“Wow, it's like the Democratic establishment is declaring open season on Howard Dean.

Well, guess what? As a progressive, I trust Dean more on this issue than I do anyone else in the party right now. Keep in mind that Dean has only tried to HELP the administration and senate Democrats. When the public option was compromised away, many progressives were ready to call it a day. But, it was Dean who said that we should still support the bill because the Medicare buy-in was still a worthwhile achievement.

But, there has to be a limit to everything. We compromised on single payer. We compromised on a strong public option. We were even will to live with opt-out public option. And, now, they are telling us to give up on the Medicare buy-in too.”

lisakaz2 replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 20:15:49

“Dean is correct!! KILL THE BILL! It's an insurance company bonanza. Sure more people will get coverage, but everyone else will see premiums will continue spiral upwards. They already told us that. And what good is prohibiting 'preexisting' if to cover it they can be charged up to 3 times the normal premium? The bill is so weak in terms of protecting the already insured that it seems bogus to call it reform. What people want to see is congress TAKE ON THE INSURANCE COMPANIES and show them who's really boss and curtail their unfair practices. Every time something of any significance was proposed, even lowering the age for medicare, republicans and insurance companies threw left hooks and dems failed to duck every time.”

“This is so childish. Rather than having an actual rationale, he just opposes it because progressives like it.

It reminds me of being a child when I got into a fight with my brother. If he said, "I want to watch cartoons." I would specifically oppose watching cartoons just because he wanted to watch them. This is what five years old do.”

“I agree with you that moralistic arguments have no place in this debate.

However, I am opposed to prostitution because it inevitably leads to a degradation of women's rights. Sex work, as a vocation, has exponentially higher rates of injury and abuse compared to other lines of work. And, by and large, women are the overwhelming targets of this.

The biggest argument employed by people who oppose legalization is that it will bring women out of the back alleys and make it safer. But, data shows that this is not the case. In the Netherlands, where prostitution has been legalized, only a small percentage of all prostitutes are actually registered. The majority continue to work in the shadows. Moreover, legalizing actually helps foster the sex slave trade, which you mentioned, since traffickers seek safe haven in places where sex work is legal.

I would never claim to oppose prostitution on moral or religious grounds. But, there are other arguments that needs to be considered.”

oregon bird replied on Dec 15, 2009 at 18:26:42

“The most civilized countries gave sex workers a lot of respect. The workers themselves -- women and men -- were trained entertainers, often the only truly educated people outside of the higher classes that could afford their services.

I'd like that to return. And it can, one house at a time, if respect is both offered and demanded by the people who protect the workers. Of course, any madams that have tried offering their workers better conditions are usually the ones raided and paraded around on the news.

Not because they service exciting, newsworthy people -- those people should be able to protect the service. They get busted *because* they consider themselves, and their employees, the equals of their clients. Oh, big no-no -- how dare they consider themselves human?”

ThomasPaineWeNeedYou replied on Dec 15, 2009 at 16:46:36

“Do not disagree with any thing you said it truly is a complex and at times dangerous and perplexing subject. My main point is that it is just as degrading to a man as a woman no matter who is the prostitute.”
