White House Plans To Step Up Pressure On Lenders To Help Homeowners

Commented Nov 29, 2009 at 07:23:43 in Business

“Unbelievable how slow and unresponsive the administration has been on this issue. There should have been a 3 - 6 month moratorium on home foreclosures back in February and March and interest rates should have been fixed temporarily to stabilize the market and let people catch up on payments.”

Commented Nov 26, 2009 at 15:10:34 in Politics

“Not a fan of Terry, but I have to admit: the Democrats might actually have had a chance, had he been the nominee. Deeds was the most inept candidate I've ever seen in my life.”

averygard replied on Nov 27, 2009 at 13:21:11

“Just what I was going to say. I think he just didn't have any experience running his own campaign, which is why it wasn't successful. Had he actually been the candidate, he would've had a much better chance of winning (and we now wouldn't have a governor who actually says things like "working women and fornicators are destroying the family)."”

Shirin Ebadi: Nobel Laureate's Medal Confiscated By Iran, Norway Claims

Commented Nov 26, 2009 at 14:40:23 in World

“What a silly move on their part. It's not the actual medal that is important - it's what it represents. Taking the medal away does not take the honor away. It's like saying, "I'll snatch your degree away and then you won't have an education anymore."

Still, I suspect that the move is meant to be an annoyance. They can't get rid of her because she is too high profile and they wouldn't want to martyr her (especially in light of Neda). So, the strategy is to keep harassing her, and basically make it difficult for her to do her job.”

“I don't think they can kill her. She's too high profile. And, as you pointed out, they would not want to make her a martyr, especially in light of the Neda incident.

But, I suspect that they will continue to be an annoyance, and keep bothering her with tax issues and so forth. Effectively make it difficult for her to do her work.”

Obama West Point Speech On Afghanistan: Full Details

Commented Nov 25, 2009 at 15:25:19 in Politics

“Another "Big Speech". Sigh. Here's what we can look forward to:

Media: "This is IT. This is Obama's make or break speech. His entire presidency and political career depends on this speech."

Obama at the speech: "We are at a defining moment in history...blah blah blah eloquent words blah blah blah more eloquent words - by the way, I'm sending 30,000 more troops, but forget about that. Instead, listen to this this finely crafted inspirational sentence."

Media after the speech: He did it! Once again, he has pulled it out. Our faith in Obama is reconfirmed.”

Hillary Clinton Vice President Rumors Flare Up Again

Commented Nov 25, 2009 at 10:58:42 in Media

“Obviously, nothing more than a rumor, but it's fun to speculate about it.

I don't think Obama would consider it, unless he was in serious trouble, or if the economy continued to spiral and health care reform had turned out bad. Incumbents traditionally play defense, not offense. So, it would be a very dramatic move on his part, which would suggest that he thinks he's in trouble. Also, I think Obama and Biden have a very good relationship and he's not going to throw Biden under the bus (unless, for some inexplicable reason Biden actually wanted to leave).

On the plus side, it would completely energize the base once again. There are not many things that can promise you the chance to make history again, and this would be one of them. Turnouts would be massive. Plus, as SoS, Hillary is not allowed to campaign or raise money. She is essentially the second-biggest fundraiser in the party - why have Shaq on your team and have him sit out the game?”

“Who are these "lot of Democrats" that you are referring to? Hillary's approval rating among Democrats is somewhere in the late 80s and early 90 % range and has been for some time. So, rest assured, that are you entirely in the minority (if you are even a Democrat to begin with).

She also polls higher than President Obama among independents and Republicans.”

party-of-one replied on Nov 26, 2009 at 09:00:02

“Hillary's approval ratings are high because she isn't running for office, and in the watered down meet and greet SoS position, she is more like a first lady. First ladies usually have high approval ratings. If Hillary behaves, doesn't lose her temper with students, doesn't arrogantly lecture leaders of other countries publicly, or start furors with foot-in-mouth careless statements, she should have 100 percent approval. If she decides to run for president again, or vp, those numbers will take a dive. America had the chance to elect her and said "no thanks."”

Maureen Dowd: Bill Clinton Lobbied Gov. Paterson To Keep Caroline Kennedy Out Of Senate

Commented Nov 25, 2009 at 04:39:07 in Politics

“If anyone kept Caroline Kennedy out of the Senate, it was Caroline Kennedy.

Her inept handling of the situation, followed by her disastrous interview with the Times were enough to convince people that she was not ready for the prime time.

That said - in a few years, if she wants to run in a Democratic primary against whomever the incumbent is and actually prove that she deserves to be the candidate, I'll support her.”

party-of-one replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 06:25:15

“The issue is of course isn't Caroline Kennedy, it is the Clintons' legendary, vicious, grudge-and-get-even, with-my-or-my-enemy-who-must-destroyed perspective on politics and governance. We are so very fortunate that the Clintons did not regain the White House. Why can't Bill just enjoy his ill-gotten millions and try to be a senior statesman instead of eing street level political hack and hitman set on evening perceived offenses long past?”
