What Happened to the Promise of 16,000 Peace Corps Volunteers by 2011?

Commented Dec 04, 2009 at 10:43:18 in Impact

“On my campus I have seen the interest in Peace Corps swell significantly. Students face no job prospects, and Peace Corps at least assures them of room and board, plus something interesting to do. A better choice for them than going into further debt for a graduate degree.”

RajeevKumarGoyal replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 12:55:21

“Good point. It's a really bad job market right now and would be an excellent decision for a young person to graduate from college and go overseas, learn a language, have the experience, and come back with more opportunities, knowledge of the world. I totally agree. That is why this should be part of the whole job creation debate that is happening as I type this email. I hope the dots connect and there is the $450 million. Please call up the White House: 202-456-1111 and leave your comment there.”

“LIkely the gluten you consumed was transferred to the child in your milk. I can't drink milk from animals fed wheat, nor eggs from hens fed wheat. People with advanced celiac disease realize that the gluten transfers and have to avoid even bacon from wheat-fed hogs. Just a thought.”

“I'm so happy for you! I have heard from my son's special ed teacher that when one family here dropped wheat from their diets, their two sons began speaking, for the first time. It's incredible. I'm so glad people are discovering the source of the problem.”

“One of the sources of the problem. There are many others. Do not expect a magic bullet here. If a diabetic child controls their sugar intake, he/she will not go into shock: however, it is only ONE aspect of interventions needed to control their health problem.”

“Gluten is key, this story is spot on. People react to wheat in a variety of ways, from constipation/diarrhea, to hives, to mind fog, to bursts of anger. ( That's why some people are angry drunks, from the gluten in beer.)

The heavy metals in the boy's body are likely from wheat, too, which is heavily sprayed with pesticides and herbicides, then stored with lots of insecticides, and eventually ground up and eaten, WITHOUT WASHING, EVER. Eating wheat ingests heavy metals from the sprays, and no one will discuss it. Too big an industry, from agriculture, on down to food processors and grocery chains.”

Lessons in Leadership: Why Obama Needs to Brush Up on His FDR

Commented Aug 25, 2009 at 20:54:41 in Politics

“FDR essentially saved us from fascism. It was more than the economy that needed redirection and leadership. Racism was rampant, jobs lost, and a series of GOP presidents had wiped out the income tax on the wealthy. In Europe and Argentina (and here, too) fascism held tremendous appeal. FDR held back the floodgates and saved us from becoming what Germany experienced. In retrospect, Social Security was a small price to pay for a sane society.”

Chopin replied on Aug 25, 2009 at 21:23:14

“Fascinating insight. Now that you brought it up, intelligent politicians should make that a positive selling point to counter and neutralize the endless cries of "socialism" and "socialized medicine". If intellectuals and ordinary folks would just tally up the tangible and intangible benefits of progressing towards a "socialized" healing society and sane nation (as in FDR's America) versus the unfathomable staggering costs of regressing towards a "fascistic" destructive society and insane nation (as in Hitler's Third Reich). A careful comparison would be instructive and a revealing learning experience. America today is at the cusp of a historically monumental choice of societal directions and national destinies, --- between a renaissance of public interests and national morality in one direction, and a spiralling degradation in the grip of private interests and predatory immorality in the other direction.”

Lessons in Leadership: Why Obama Needs to Brush Up on His FDR

Commented Aug 25, 2009 at 20:48:46 in Politics

“The big difference, is that FDR had to contend with Huey Long, who challenged him to actually put the second New Deal into place. We need a Huey Long today. Huey was hugely popular across the country, and his plan to run against FDR forced FDR to finally get programs out that affected the people. Huey's plan to tax the rich, to "share the wealth" had tremendous impact on FDR, who had saved the banks first.”

morris1030 replied on Aug 25, 2009 at 21:57:23

“Your take on Huey Long and FDR is a stretch. I lived through FDR's administration and he faced far more dire stuff than we see now. The entire economy had collapsed along with everyone's savings and the banking industry collapsed with it. There were breadlines, unemployment, hunger, suicides, shantytowns [all along the East and Hudson rivers]. Applecarts on the street manned by former teachers and professionals. Hunger. Oakies. Depression on all levels.

It was far, far, worse than now and FDR took it on by fighting like hell with those in his own party and with the GOP. The Supremes were staffed with those who could defend civill iberties and reforms. FDR one was a real leader possessed of intellect and guts whose brilliant communication skills advanced his messages that reached the common man. He also knew how to fight and proved to be a masterful politician. He also was in tune with the inner life of the american people. And most of all he passionately cared, and put it to the test.

Obama is folding for whatever reasons. Because he can't or doesn't want to fight. Because his advisors have led him into a faulty strategy. Because his naivete is so great that he really thinks he can get a first class healthcare bill with bi-partisanship? Because he intends to compromise as a way of governing inspite of his promises?
He has shamefully allowed the republicans to frame and control the healthcare debate.”

“That's what I see where I live in rural America. I sell free range organic eggs. Conservatives then either shop by price (why are mine more than the Dollar Store??) or go into their own egg production, feeding crap and charging less to try to take away my market. They don't stay in business long, but they are a nuisance.”

“I raise organic chickens, and the feed is 4 times the cost of the cheap, chemical-laden feed. People don't want to pay more for quality food, but think costly pharmaceuticals are the answer. I encounter people who seem to brag that their medications run over $200/month for a variety of mundane health problems that could be resolved with better diet. Yet, they balk at paying more for organically-produced eggs, meat, and milk. I don't have insurance, must pay for my own healthcare, therefore eat only organic foods. I take no meds; am nearly 60 years old.”

“I totally agree. I am a youngish person, who is part of a really great community that started a tradition when my husband lost his job almost 10 years ago: We all get together every other Friday night and take turns cooking dinner for the group. It is a fabulous way to stay close to friends, and it is very economical. There are so many of us now that you only have to host about 3 times a year (fairly large numbers at those times, but still less expensive than fancy dinner out for 4), so you end up getting a great, home cooked meal once every 2 weeks that you mostly don't have to pay for.”
