Please, Cut Obama Some Slack

“He got off on the wrong note with me almost immediately with his choices for his financiail team - Wall Street Hacks who had gotten us in the mess we were in. It was mind boggling to me.
Then there is his sweetheart deal with Big Pharma. Sold us down the river there, selling us down the river on health care too. In the end it does do a few good things but more than anything it's a bailout for any industry that doesn't need one. An industry that does nothing for our health but suck money from us, an industry that is superfluous to the health care equation.
The reality is that he, like Bill Clinton did before him, takes his progressive base, for which I am one, for granted - and we're beyond sick of it. If he had any spine and was for common folk he would have proceeded much differently than he did this first year. Is he preferable to Bush/Cheney? Of course, but that bar is almost below ground it's so low. Is that what we should settle for?”

'Silent Epidemic': Number Of US Children Going Hungry Soars

“Whatever the reason children should not go hungry here or anywhere. These are very difficult times for so many of the non privileged. Economic/War policy since Reagan has enriched the already well off and left a few scraps for the rest of us.
Yes, some parents are irresponsible but that doesn't mean we should punish their children. None of us had any control over our parents and circumstance. People have an equal chance of being born with a silver spoon in your mouth and being born in the slums of Calcutta.
We must feed the children and worry less about mollifying Wall Street bankers who are scamming us right and left. That might actually be the case if we can get the money and the whores out of Washington.”

Sherrod Brown: Obama Focused On Main Street, But Not All His Advisers Are
Commented Nov 22, 2009 at 16:15:17 in Politics
“A major reason why Obama is slipping some in the polls is due to true progressives being upset that he's largely governing center right. I know the wing nuts love saying that America is center right but that's dead wrong - maybe among a good majority of older white males and some others in southerly directions but that's about it. Young people (other than brainwashed "Jesus Camp" victims) overwhelmingly just don't care about all the social wedge issues that the republicans have successfully used since Tricky Dick.
Watch what happens to his polls numbers if he ever starts doing what he said he would do while he was running - though I'm not holding my breath for that.”

Health Care PASSES: The Scene In The House When It Happened

“This is better than nothing, some things are in there that are good (or really less bad) for a few of us. That said there is no reason on this earth why we need for profit insurance companies when really all we need are bookkeepers. Insurance companies perform no health services for us, they are superfluous, nothing but leeches, sucking the life out of us while robbing us..
I'd love for anyone in Washington to explain to me why we need them. What does a CEO making millions have to do with keeping any of us healthy? We go it this way, capitalism run a muck, pretty much alone among modern countries.
Once again, the big truism is that real, serious, systemic change, change we need to level the playing field among Americans, will only come to be if we go to public financing of elections and curtail lobbying/bribery. Money is the prime reason this bill is so watered down, and it will be the reason it will be further watered down in the mystery box know as the US Senate.”

The focus on the stock exchanges instead of Main Street is because major media is corporately owned just as enough of Washington is controlled by big money to stop the copious fundamental systemic changes we desperately need.
It's a sign of the times in the US that, other than sometimes at MSNBC, we must go to Comedy Central and the BBC to get any real, probing news at all .
The encouraging news is twofold ; we have great legislators like Senator Sanders and Rep. Grayson who are stepping up and speaking unadulterated truth to power, and there is a palpable unrest among the populace, some of it misguided but it's there.”

A very energized American electorate voted for a Democrat majority in Congress and overwhelmingly for Obama, who ran in part on a health-care reform platform. By more than a sixty-five percent majority, Americans support a public option, among doctors, the number is higher.
The public did it's job by voting to declare the need for national health-care reform. Don't blame the victims. The problem is that, unlike too big to fail healthcare, financial and pharma institutions, voters, however organized can't overcome monopolies that can afford to spend billions of dollars a day to lobby and threaten Congress. Ten percent of voters are out of work, thousands die daily because they can't afford insurance, how can they compete?
The problem isn't complacent voters, it's outrageously wealthy vested interests with no interest in reform who can make or break candidates, and politicians more concerned about their re-election coffers than the coffins being filled by Americans without health insurance.”

“As the health care 'debate' continues, it has become clear to me that what is important for the 'moderate' Blue Dogs and Republicans alike is the maintaining of the status quo through inaction or through ineptitude at the expense of the citizens of the US, both insured and uninsured.
There is no question anymore as to how this issue needs to framed and presented to both Congress and the Public; and that is that it all boils down to 'humanity vs corporate rule' as you mentioned above.
So far Grayson is just about the only person in Congress to call out the Republican's for what they they are, obstructionists to the common good of the citizens.. .and he was lambasted by the right for doing so as they continue to smear, distort, and outright lie about health care reform through a campaign of misinformation and fear.
What the Left (Progressives and Dems) needs to do at this point if they are REALLY serious about pushing for a public option or single payer system is to give the neo-cons and 'religious' right a good dose of their own medicine and frame health care as a moral and ethical issue...
...What would Jesus do?
Would he help the disenfranchised, the poor, the voiceless, the destitute by kicking the money changers out of the Temple?
or
Would would he denounce the very people he was sent to save and champion the cause of power, profit, and greed?”

God bless Dennis Kucinich, Bernie Sanders, and the few other voices in the wilderness who truly work in our best interest, but there just aren't enough of this kind of legislator - those interested in the good of the people instead of being more interested in carrying water for their bag men(Baucus exhibit A). The fact is that bribery wins the day on big things like this. It's all about transferring as much money as possible from those who need it to those who don't.
It's all enabled because the networks are corporately owned. They control the MSM debate. A real media would have not allowed war hero Kerry to be swift boated while draft evader Bush got an almost complete pass, it was surreal but that's today's America. Rather tried to rock that boat and got vilified.
It will take an enormous public uprising to change much of anything, and I don't see that happening. Too many people are oblivious to what is really happening so they buy into what they hear from the corporate media and think all is well - at least until they get the big C and lose their house, and go through the agony of bankruptcy while undergoing chemo. This tragedy is being played out over and over in our once great country.
Only in America, we're #1 - right.”

Joseph Stiglitz Urges End To GDP 'Fetish' In Favor Of Broader Measures

“The cautious honeymoon was over for me when right off the bat Obama put in those foxes (Summers, Geithner) to guard the hen house. Why not people like Stiglitz and Reich?
That was the first tangible clue that Obama wasn't really going to go after Wall Street like he should. And the news and politicians keep focusing on GDP and the stock market way too much, GDP and the stock market don't reflect what's going on on Main Street.
I'm hoping that indeed the audit of the Fed proceeds and that it brings down a monumental house of cards. In essence what has been going on since the Death Valley Days president is a massive transfer of wealth from the lower and middle classes to the upper classes. We need to push Obama as hard as we can to start reversing that flow, and if he resists we need to challenge him in 2012 with a charismatic true progressive. The hour is growing late and soon it will be too late.”

A Virtuous Tax

“Taxing these transactions makes perfect sense, would raise tons of cash - but the corporate hold on Washington and MSM is such these days that they'll cut social net programs first and/or tax the middle class first. Anything so as not to trouble the billionaires.
I tend to agree with Ravi Batra who says a new golden age of populism will spring from a collapse of the super capitalistic financial system( in our about 2010) that controls about all now. He predicted the breakup (and said it would happen about when it happened) of the Soviet Union a couple of decades before it occurred.
We'll see, the evidence seems pretty clear that Obama is not the type to do serious, tangible confronting, not the type to call out the crooks, the Boss Tweed types, like the Roosevelt's did (he seems to be more into being Mr. bi partisan), but enough pressure from the public might force him to slide hard to the left.. Hope springs eternal.”

“I think industry has taken over policymaking so completely that it is only a matter of time before the revolution. What form it takes is the big question. But we just piled $2 trillion in the pockets of rich investors, will force people to buy cra**y health insurance at exorbitant rates, and we'll not ask anything of them in return--no regulation, no nothing. Will revolution come through the ballot box or the firearm? Obama and a Democratically controlled Congress are proving it won't be the ballot box.”
Little Change On Wall St. A Year After Lehman Collapse

“It may take a third party to get much changed. I hope all the liberals who were so thrilled with Obama's speech are moving back into reality a day later.
We need a progressive leader who will call this culture out, ala FDR, someone who will take on the corporate criminals, and it sure doesn't seem like Obama is inclined to go there, in fact quite the opposite. He's far from dumb so I'm sure he knows what's what, so something else is holding him back.
We could be Denmark++ if we could just get the government more about all it's people instead of what it is now, mostly all about Wall Street and old money. That's so tragic. If we have to maybe we can hang on long enough for the oldest generation to be replaced by the next generation, because younger ones trend much more progressive and most don't care about the social wedge issues that have caused so many to vote against their own self interest.”
