“Nice story, and nice that she left money to these different organizations, but, too bad she didn't know about it sooner, she may have lived a more comfortable life, and possibly invested this money wisely so that it worked for her.”

“Not for those of us over the age of 50. With over 30 years experience in my field and a college education, it is impossible to even get to the first interview. I have been at this now for over 6 months, had two interviews and no offers. In the last three years the only work I have found is part time minimum wage retail work. Age discrimination is alive and well in 2013.”

Commented Dec 6, 2013 at 17:35:47 in Los Angeles

“Good! Citi Residential Lending totally bungled the short sale on my home in 2008, resulting in a foreclosure instead of a short sale. Within days of totally screwing up my attempted short sale with three buyers, they sold the servicing of the loan to yet another lender. BTW, all three prospective buyers withdrew their offers after Citi sat on them for months. The resulting foreclosure sale netted the lender who held the mortgage much less than they would have netted with the short sale.”

Black Friday Spending Falls Despite Record Crowds

Black Friday Spending Falls Despite Record Crowds

Commented Dec 2, 2013 at 10:48:41 in Business

“Well duh !!! Of course people aren't spending. The Great Recession isn't over yet, and many people have learned to live on a lot less and are living in fear of losing their jobs if they haven't already. The last few years have been very difficult for many people, and they still don't feel comfortable spending. I have been looking for a decent full time job since 2009, but all I find are low paying part time jobs that you cannot live on. No one wants to hire someone over the age of 50 anymore, regardless of how many years experience you have in a field. As for spending, I only buy what is absolutely necessary, and continue to drive a 12 year old car. I still see people losing their jobs, and many who have just given up looking and retired earlier than they had planned.”

“And this is why I stopped going to Wal Mart period. A few months ago a nasty customer accused me of cutting in line in front of her at the deli counter (I didn't), there was a drug related shoot out involving the police in the parking lot, my neighbor's purse was snatched, and other assorted bad acts. Maybe Wal Mart will learn their lesson and stop opening on Thanksgiving Day. Personally, I will be so glad when the Holidays are over!!!!”

“I stopped going to the Wal Mart near me in Florida after there was a drug related shooting in the parking lot involving the police, another argument over a parking space in the lot, my neighbor had her purse snatched in the store, and a rude customer accusing me of cutting in line in front of her at the deli counter (I didn't). No thank you, I will shop on line, if at all. The great recession of 2008 hasn't ended yet, a good friend of mine just lost his job, and I have been looking for work since May. My family stopped exchanging gifts years ago, taking a lot of the pressure off both mentally and financially.”

Rob Chapman on Nov 20, 2013 at 21:57:43

“Exactly. I'm 41 & my credit is bad (and no, I don't blame anyone but myself for that). Every time I apply for a job (second job, that is), IF I get to the interview stage, I don't get hired. And EVERY single time, I find out that the position was filled by some 16-20 year old with no job experience or skills or credit history (let's face it, 16 year olds haven't had time to build a credit history). Because THAT'S what employers want, young kids who will just say yes to everything & won't question their boss if they're treated wrong.”

“It isn't just Wal Mart. I recently worked for a large supermarket chain in Florida. The pay is barely above minimum wage, and almost every employee is part time with no benefits and no extra pay for Holidays or weekends or nights. Many of my co workers had to work a second job just to get by. Management doesn't seem to be phased by the fact that they have such a high turnover rate of employees and all they constantly do is train new employees who will leave in a year anyway.”

aviationr on Nov 19, 2013 at 08:00:02

“Sounds like Publix. Same story there as well. George Jenkins built it up and now the family only wants to bleed it dry. Turnover is terrible and it used to be a great company to work for.”

“Ah yes! How many millions did Obama care steal from medicare? How many insured are losing their insurance? I feel bad about your leg. I have uninsured kids in late 20's that need medical care. Obama's government is not helping them. Again why do we think the govenrmnet needs to supply our needs? If medical care is a right. Then food on the table and a roof over your head is a right. Transportation is a right. I am starting to feel like mom and dad should still be taking care of me. NOT! Before government take over in the form of a welfare system alot more people were involved in charities. Now government is our biggest charity.”
