Call To Change Senate's Filibuster Math Grows

Commented Dec 18, 2009 at 12:28:24 in Politics

“That would be nice but the filibuster (talk till you drop) rule has been changed so that talk is no longer necessary, it just means someone calls a filibuster and then the Senate takes up other pending legislation. I just googled "Senate Filibuster rule" and learned a lot..... including how the current "quasi filibuster" rule can be changed back to have some teeth and pain in it.”

“Thank You, Elizabeth. We can always count on you to speak the truth and stand up for "We the People"

If ever there was a time for middle class mobilization to fight back, it is now. We could start with Moveon.org while at the same time continue to lobby our representatives in Washington.

Does anyone have some ideas for effectively fighting back NOW and not just when election time rolls around???.... by that time the idea of consumer protection could be dead and buried.”

“we have been talking about violence against the President and others; the question of violence in movies and video games is a different, though related subject and of great importance.

I am sure KO would be happy to talk about that as well but right now he and this article is addressing a much more focused subject. How about staying focused!”

“Sorry, VikingQuest ~ in this case (fighting against those who incite people to act on their worst fears and hatreds) is not just a preference issue ..... it's a matter calling out those who are our democracies worst enemy.... a person who advocates violence!”

So movies and video games that make violence cool are also a discussion on Olbermann or just Beck because KO is losing in the ratings?”

“BIG DEAL, so he "insists that protest of every kind MUST be peaceful" ...... that's a risk management ploy pure and simple. But even if it were not, that plea would not deter a wing nut from taking up the challenge and going the distance.

Every president has groups that disagree with policy and we live in a country that respects that right. However it is not a license to stir up hatred and incite people to violence. We saw how that works when MLK and RFK were killed..... that both men who pulled the triggers were acting on different motives, the end result made a lot of people happy..... people who hated what these two courageous men stood for.

Before I believe you on the polls, I'd like to know which ones, asking what questions and by whom.”

smpj replied on Nov 20, 2009 at 11:42:02

“Stir people to violence? And where has it occurred? You just want to shut him up. He deserves a place at the table just like Olbermann & Maddow.

And relative to the polls you asked about, I was talking about Beck's Nielson television ratings, which just came out and are up. It seems, the afore mentioned Olbermann & Maddow's have declined.”

“Bravo for a wonderful pick and a thought provoking post!!

I haven't read or heard of this book but can assure you, it will be shortly. Although I am retired and have slowed down considerably from those long executive management days of multitasking. Now I often think so much energy was wasted doing the wrong things for the health care organization employer and patients. While my primary responsibility was Quality Improvement and Risk Management program oversight, my own QI and RM was in need of retooling. Had someone suggested adding a bit of slowdown to my professional days, I would have heard the words, agreed with the words but would have been too busy to step back and understand how it might make a difference in the outcomes of our QI and RM programs.

Now, with hindsight I can see what I couldn't as I multi tasked through my days at work and often at home. My new employer ~ myself ~ requires slowing down. I'm a photographer ~ not a photojournalist but a fine arts photographer attempting to see clearly and capture the images that speak to me. The best book I have for this new passion is The Tao of Photography.

Thank you for the time you took Arianna, scoping out and then writing about this new aspect of HP!!”

“NO, JEP57,, it depends on the words you use.

Ability to disagree and protest is one of the treasured hallmarks of our Democracy.

When the words are clearly inflammatory and perjorative about a persons race, then that is over the line. Spewing racial hatred and bigotry is also over the line.

If such words or related cartoons were used against Rice or Thomas then that was equally over the line, particularly if done by large groups of people with intent to discredit them based on their race.”

Sunday Roundup

Commented Aug 30, 2009 at 11:01:09 in Politics

“If we learned anything from Kennedy's example it is to be pragmatic, negotiate but not on core principles. Today, anyone who cares about getting effective health care reform legislation needs to do the same. Deal with the hand we have at the moment and work hard to change what needs to be changed.

As for me, that means not to give up home but to join a phone banking group in order to gain support for the legislation... not once but consistently until the legislation is passed. I did this to get Obama elected and I can do it again. I need to prepare. It will help me to have a picture of Senator Kennedy on the front of my working folder with the preparation materials and facts inside

Let's all do what we can with the resources we have and let's stay in the arena until we are successful!”

He has proven himself to be a self server in this role and what the nation needs is someone who is willing to tell those who elected him and those who have funded his campaigns that his highest obligation is to make sure his committee does what is best for the American people!!

He has no seniority right to the Chairmanship ~ he's there at the pleasure of his party and it can be taken away at the pleasure of the Party.

This issue is so important we cannot have people who lack courage and integrity leading the charge!”

CBS had the good sense to not mess with him ~ we like him like he was. And I liked Christiane the way she was ~ it was part of the trust thing.

Why does every woman anchor on TV have to be sexy?? Having said all that, I'll await judging until I find out if she still has the character and courage she had before...... I think she will but then this is CNN!

PS: I know you were joking ~ my comments are just to the world at large :+)”

What about the small children ~ how does this media buzz she is fostering help them?? What she tells them in the quiet of her home is one thing but to intentionally put her family mess in the cross hairs of the media frenzy mode is the most uncaring thing a mother can do. For what purpose?”

Media Literacy 101: The Ethics of Photoshopping a Shirtless Obama

Commented Apr 21, 2009 at 18:16:58 in Media

“Yawn away Roger but there is a very large difference between your "adjusted the contrast,, tone and sometime even focus to best sell the story" and the photoshopping done here..... although it too was done to sell a story.

Here the editor wanted to play up the hunk/sexuality factor of the President. A president who a segment of the population working hard to discredit and trivialize. The sexy, black hunk image plays right into their hands. It is insulting and demeaning.

Your bias may not allow you to look at the two images and see my point. The fault is not with the person who did the photoshopping ~ it is with the editor who wants to sell magazines so fiercely that he will take add fuel to the fire.

Editors can cartoon his policy decisions; his actions as president all they want ~ but when they start playing to the prejudices of the like of Rush for no reason other than to sell magazines, it is pretty sick!”

The only change I would suggest is: Since The US Government owns a majority of the company, we should fire the CEO, not ASK him to resign!! This greedy SOB doesn't respond to "asks". In addition, his personal assests should be frozen until an audit of the books is complete..... oh, and his passport should be turned over for safe keeping.”
