I sacrificed, worked hard and did right by my child...without child support or State support. The sacrifices were hell but, did it as it was the right thing to do. Get off your high horse. Be glad you have not been in the same position.”

“Hi Red, how are you? I remember this photgraph well and it affects me now, just as it did in 1974. It seems you found your calling long ago with the loving, kind lessons lived and therfore taught to you by your grandparent and you lovingly applied with all your heart while caring for your Mother. As a former hospice nurse, it was quite the blessing to be able to be there for the one suffering; not just with palliative nursing care but, holding their hand, listening to them speak of their joys, regrets, wishes...Unfortunately at times, family members were unable to cope (which all grieve in their own ways with these things), so we listened, cared for and respected the patients. In no way, shape or form do I pretend to be a therapist yet, I feel in some small way, I understand what you are saying and how it impacted you.. Peace, Lily.”

rreggaeredkc on May 3, 2013 at 18:14:34

“Hi Lily. Always nice to hear from you. Lily, you are blessed by your work and your work is blessed by you. There are many of us...we just don't all know each other. But it starts one person at a time. As therapists, we are not as involved with hospice unless it is for comfort care ROM. As far as I am concerned....no matter what someone's multiple dx may be...when family can't do it...when friends are joining God...when the tears roll down...the best medicine is a soft smile and a hug or holding their hand. I swear it's worth a million dollars Lily. But you already know. If any of us can get a flicker in one's eyes...we have done our jobs well. Have been sick Lily, but will tell you about another time friend. Smiling at you.”

“We have a voucher program here as well. You are right, it is not fair. I did give credit to teachers, et.al who go above and beyond. I do feel parents should be involved because their children are the ones being educated in the schools, not as helicopter parents or bullies, but show up for confrences, go to PTA meetings, etc.,I was also one of the parents helping with supplies, etc.

My disdain was geared towards those who do not do their job, stoop to rigging of tests, or feel they cannot be fired for lack of performance.”

“I can't help but disagree with you. I have seen schools / "education run by teachers, counselors, a school psychologist, etc." Wasn't all that hot, actually, especially since it was geared towards their supposed superiority and lack of responsibility towards the students.

I do have the utmost respect for teachers/counselors/psychomotrists who do their job and in fact, go above and beyond. Having a "Special Needs" kid, unfortunately, I saw at least in my State, gross disrespect and negligence.

Even if one does not have a "Special Needs" kid, many schools (insert teachers and or administration) are under fire for rigging tests, so their school would not suffer a cut in funding. Teachers and all others in the educational department, should get fired for less than acceptable peformance and if you think parents should be left out of the educational system, I am more than amazed at your comment. Perhaps your tenure is at risk?”

Nancy E Skinner on Apr 28, 2013 at 22:12:36

“I can certainly appreciate your comments.  I was a school psychologist for 30 years and have seen it all, the good and the bad.  Bad teachers (and there are more than I care to think about) need to be weeded out.  The system is set up now, in such a way, that good teachers fear losing their jobs that unfortunately depend on standardized test scores.  Those teaching in an inner city school are at a disadvantage compared to their counterparts in a more well-to-do part of town.  As far parents, I didn't mean to imply that they should have no say in their child's education.  But too many times parents seem to think that because they went through 12 years of school they know everything about how a school should be run.  Too many parents are overprotective of their children, and blame the teachers when their child does poorly.  Over the years it has resulted in a "dumbing down" of the children by the educational system.  There is a saying that is very appropriate:  "The teachers are afraid of the principal, the principal is afraid of the superintendent, the superintendent is afraid of the school board, the school board is afraid of the parents, the parents are too protective of the children, and the children are not afraid of anyone!" There is a great deal of truth in that.”

“You need to come to my state of Indiana where education policy is dictated by hog farmers and florists...we have the biggest voucher program in the country and the majority of the vouchers go to Catholic and other Christian schools who can "pick their students". My daughter has to take an entrance exam to get into the local Catholic school and they get tax dollars...I am a special education teacher of student with moderate to intense disabilities and I spend nights each week until 11 pm, trying to do what I need to do for my students without any help or money to buy anything (as our state has drastically slashed funding to publics schools in addition to the vouchers)...I assure you, those private schools who are getting tax payer dollars are NOT going to accept any of my students with special needs....Thankfully my parents are wonderful and supportive as they can be and don't show the disdain towards teachers as you do....”

They picket/disrupt funerals of Veterans, Active Duty Military people who died in Service to their Country (which obviously makes one come to the conclusion the WBC is less than appreciative of nor do they serve their Country) or anyone else, due to their twisted self-righteous agenda.”

Glad he is at least offically recognized; it is wonderful others remember him for what he did.”
