“All I'm saying is that it is an example of Christian architecture just as Gothic architecture is. It expresses design elements favoured by the church of its time. That's what it is, it's not up for debate.”

“I am speaking of the history of the building which is irrefutably Christian. The design of the building was in response to what was wanted by the church. That does not translate to denying brilliance in secular building designs. I believe it should remain as a museum.”

“Excuse me but this building was born out of Orthodox Christianity, it would not exist in the form it is in today without Christianity. Every group that turns into an institution has bad people, it's the result of politics not religion per se.”

An Thrope on Dec 4, 2013 at 17:38:19

“Yes, it was built with a religious purpose, but it's not as if you need religion in order to have inspiring architecture. I think it would make a great library; at least that way it would not be used for promoting an excluding religion which calls all outsiders heretics.”

ohiotechie on Dec 2, 2013 at 17:45:57

“I'm not advocating that at all but I also don't believe that simply because someone puts a label on something that it's true. I don't have the time or ability to hunt, grow and gather all my food so I am just as affected as anyone. To the extent possible I buy from small producers but that just isn't practical for everything so a lot of what I buy comes from a grocery store. That store is being supplied by a world wide supply chain that includes thousands of suppliers, all of whom are driven by profit and self-interest. Do you seriously believe that pears that come from Brazil or Argentina are grown pesticide free? Do you seriously believe that fish from producer A, and which has been sold and resold maybe a handful of times before it gets to my plate is really organic or is pollutant free?

All I'm doing is pointing out the reality. The article makes it seem as though you can simply look for this or that fish for this or that reason and I'm saying that the producers will tell you it's whatever they think you need to hear to get you to buy it.”

“Here is another quote, this one backs the 97% rate I quoted above. AGAIN I did not embellish anything.
FGM/C dates back some two thousand years in Egypt, and
remains widely practiced. Among the worst affected group is the
one of women of reproductive age in Egypt: data from the
forthcoming 2005 Egypt Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS)
indicates that the prevalence rate among ever-married women aged
15-49 is 96%. This values is similar to the one observed in the
2003 EIDHS of 97%.

“There are varying statistics reported by different bodies, here is a quote which mentions a 96% rate of FGM, I have read 97% before and did not intend to embellish anything.

An older meta-study on "female sexual castration" presented in 1989-MAR showed that five surveys conducted between 1977 and 1985 estimated that 80.5% of Egyptian women in Cairo and Alexandria had undergone FGM. 4

During 2007-JUN, Ahmad 'Aliwa, a women's rights activist, described one finding that shows the near universal practice of FGM in Egypt, noting:

"The Center for Social Studies conducted a survey which showed that 85% of the prostitutes in Egypt were circumcised. There is no relation between female circumcision and the girls' behavior." 5

A 2005 report by UNICEF suggested that 96% of Egyptian women between the ages of 15 and 49 who were married or had been married in the past had undergone a form of FGM or circumcision. 6

“I don't think the removal of the male foreskin compares to the removal of the female clitoris and in extreme cases all of the labia. It isn't the same. Maybe if they removed the entire shaft of the penis with a vestigial hole for the urethra it would be comparable to the most extreme FGM. (Of course that is unthinkable to men). They don't even remove the glans of the penis where the concentration of nerves for sexual stimulation is the highest, that would possibly compare to removing the clitoris where a women's concentration of nerves is the highest. That doesn't mean I condone male circumcision, I do NOT.”
