“I think the point is that someone who gets a job at a higher end restaurant is supposed to be the best and gets compensated for being thought of so highly. It's like any other service though the restaurant did the hiring and not you. Let's say you wanted piano lessons. Don't you think Billy Joel would command a higher rate than my cousin who's talented but not famous? Maybe my cousin would teach you better or the same but that's not how it works.
If you got your hair done at a salon, there are jr. stylists who make the least and the owner or lead stylist making the most. Well, there are servers at the Cracker Barrel and ones at the Russian Tea Room. It is thought the ones at the latter should be better and thus get more. Certainly, the job has more status than working at the HoJo a few blocks away.”

“You missed the point of my comment.
I never said anything about different kinds of restaurants, I made a comment about the prices.
I can go to Hooters and get a $3 dollar beer or a $100 bottle of Dom Perignon. They carry both.
Billy Joel makes more money because he is more talented and has a bigger fan base. The same amount of talent is used to open a $10 bottle of wine as opposed to a $100 bottle.”

“Not his server, no, but those folks work hard. They are not on par with a fast food joint and if you cannot see that, you got a problem. The point of the system is to reward people who give good service; I don't know if it's just but it is to motivate that person so they don't act "entitled. " Only in large parties will a gratuity be included, since the bill may be split and the server probably had to do a lot.
Just because you got a problem with the system doesn't mean you should hurt the ppl who serve. They are taxed at a rate that presumes what tips they received, so again, they have incentive to please.
I get the feeling based on your inability to distinguish fast food from sit down and targeting resentment at the wait staff that you're a shoddy tipper.”

“You still have not answered my question as to why I should pay more money for you to walk a $50 steak out to me from the kitchen as opposed to a $10 burger.
If you open a $10 bottle of wine for me, or a $100 bottle of wine, you did the same amount of work.
Best Buy got rid of commission and pays their workers a flat wage and guess what, they are number one.
By the way my first job in high school was a bus boy at Old Country Buffet and I worked twice as hard as a traditional restaurant sever and we got no tips except for the occasional customer that felt sorry for us and tipped us.”

“I'm sick of ppl feeling sorry for this guy. He doesn't have a Constitutional right to endorsement $$$. He eff'd up and in more ways than one. For every server he's stiffed, I think this is his karmic reward. And yet he still has more money than I'll see in at least 10 lifetimes. He made his bed.”
AngusC replied on Dec 31, 2009 at 15:07:57
“Were you a server that was stiffed?
How do you know that is true?
On a related note, a lot of servers are entitled jer ks.
If you being me a $10 burger or a $50 steak, you still did the same amount of work.
Why should I have to pay you more just because it is more expensive?
I think restaurants should have to pay their staff's salaries and not nickel and dime me and ask me to pay them on top of my expensive meals.
McDonalds, Taco Bell, Qdoba etc etc have shown that you can run a restaurant profitably and pay your staff's salaries.”
