House Pushes Forward On Estate-Tax Break, Pushes Back Jobs Bill

“I am afraid the Senate is determined to reinforce the idea that they should ALL be voted out of office and as soon as there are enough new people to start re-writing the laws, we need to get rid of a lack of term limits. They all get too comfortable and too greedy and they lose sight of the fact that they are supposed to be representing the needs and interests of the people.

Bernanke Channels Willie Sutton In Assault On Social Security: 'That's Where The Money Is'

“What is unsustainable is the attitude of these b@$#rds who have never gone without anything in their lives when it comes to Social Security. The same stripe of people have prevented a national health care program such as enjoyed by civilized peoples worldwide. They have rewritten the rules and tweaked the game until no one can get ahead unless they come from the same corrupt brand of thieves as those in our "elected officials" ranks. There is no way the average person can rise through the means of simple hard work and saving. The thieves have made certain there is nothing left to save once the bare necessities have been taken care of.
Some people have lost everything for reasons not of their own making. I lost everything I had worked all my life for to the dirty tricks pulled by my ex and his lawyer. My ex had the money to pay for legalese, I had nothing and was in no emotional shape to defend myself due to death of my child. Social Security is all I'm going to have and it is going to be $611 a month. Know any Senators or Wall Street fat cats who would like to trade places with me?”

Bernie Sanders Moves To Block Ben Bernanke's Confirmation

“I have to agree that President Obama's nomination of Bernanke was another of his foolish mistakes. I must say that if things don't turn around soon, I don't plan to vote for him again.
By turn around, I should clarify that I am talking about his nominations. His appointees have thus far been pretty much losers. I had hoped for much better from this man.
I am in no position to know whether things would be better if the repubs were not such pure beasts about blocking every single, solitary thing on the agenda, every judicial appointment, every cabinet appointment. Still, more common sense and less political kow-towing would be the first thing the President should address, once he evaluates his first year in office.
At this point, we, the people, have a lot of questions and very few answers.”

“Since President Obama is very intelligent person, one is left to conclude from objective evidence that those are indeed his personal values and perception of problems and solutions. His key appointments (Summers, Geithner, Bernanke) spell "continuity", not "transformation". He is NOT a transformational president. He is an "incrementalist", taking whatever incremental steps he perceives to be possible, pragmatic or doable in the prevailing political winds. A truly transformational agent of change starts by changing his own internal beliefs, sets his own compass, and then charts a course to transform the prevailing beliefs and prevailing political winds.
Somebody like Mahatma Gandhi is a transformational leader. If he was not, he NEVER in his wildest dreams would have believed that such a physically small frail-looking man would have dared to believe that he would challenge the prevailing political orthodoxy among the Indian political ruling class and imperial power of the British Empire, and believe he could succeed in gaining independence for the Indian nation, and MAKE 400 MILLION ORDINARY INDIANS BELIEVE IT WAS POSSIBLE. THAT, is transformation. He did it through the most unconventional power to move people to change. He did it without firing a shot. He did it through 'satyagraha' --- a philosophy of nonviolence. He TRANSFORMED colonial British India. He succeeded. India succeeded. He transformed, not because it was easy, but because it was necessary.”

Geithner and Bernanke have to go, they are bred-in-the-bone Wall Street, and these top jobs must go to people with the intelligence to evaluate the situation. These people should also have had to budget, go without, and dream, so they know what the average person does just to stay alive.
New credit laws must be enacted IMMEDIATELY. By giving the greedy a timeline well into the future, they have seized the chance to grab as much as they can before the law goes into effect. My Sears Mastercard representative told me that in exactly those words not half an hour ago.
The people have taken as much as they can.
You might also offer as an idea to the President that mortgages should be forgiven, loans for modest homes made even without a down payment, since many of us who have dreamed of a home of our own have been hurt by the "new" tighter rules governing loans that aren't being made. Everyone needs something to hope for, even at 65 years old. When those raking in the fat bonuses provide for those at the lowest end of the financial situation, I'll forgive those multi-million dollar perks.”

Like the disaster of Iraq, this is the doing of the cheney/bush debacle, and the American people will be paying for it for the remainder of this century, or until the United States is broken up into smaller, more manageable countries. It is too big, too corrupt, and too disfunctional to remain in its entirety. The nation is already beginning to come apart with the total division on the cause of party, race, and financial standing.

There was a time when if one party took over the top job, there was some grumbling and nursing of hurt feelings and ruffled feathers, but after a couple of weeks everyone got down to work and worked on the nation's business. These days the rethugs have flatly stated they want nothing more than to destroy Barack Obama. They do not speak out against the stripped-thred wingnuts who scream "Kill him!" because 99% of them are HOPING that one of those wingnuts will do just that. Then they can shed crocodile tears and say "We told you he wouldn't keep you safe! He couldn't even keep himself safe!" There will also be the ugly ones who are open about their rejoicing.
Unless you have the skill and the knowledge to solve the problems, do not cast stones.”

“RadCenter, the problem is not that the bailout (although I am DEEPLY suspicious of ANY proposal that originated in the bush empire) took place, the problem is that what was suppossed to happen did NOT. President Obama made a huge mistake in choosing Geithner and Summers and still does not seem to recognise that fact. This is going against him and will continue to do so until these two are fired or they resign. They SHOULD have the decency to resign, since they must be aware of the public anger and unrest they are causing.
ALL of the top CEOs and upper level of management on Wall Street should have been fired and their assets seized. New people should have been brought in, and great minds abound in this world, some of them choose NOT to be associated with Wall Street for the very reasons that are destroying the nation, it is corrupt.
A major benefit for the nation would have been actually GIVING the little people, making less than $75,000 a year, a generous monetary allowance upon which they could draw UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. Buying a sensible house, not a "McMansion", starting a small business, paying off their mortgage on their residence. By freeing the working class from the burden of coping with the restrictions put in place to discourage anyone from challenging the wealthy for a piece of the pie, many jobs would have been created, and people could have withstood cutbacks.
However, try telling that to speculators.”

I still am a big fan of the President, I voted for him, volunteered for him, etc., but I am out of patience with his selection of Wall Street insiders, all of whom are steeped in "the way things have been done", as advisors and people in decision-making positions. Geithner and Summers are two of the worst mistakes he has made and they need to be corrected. He also needs to get a tighter rein on Rahm Emanuel. Emanuel's personal likes and dislikes should have NO bearing on selecting the best person for a job. Howard Dean can run rings around Emanuel in many areas, and Obama needs to recognize that.”

Several people have questioned the rightness of a mere handful of politicians, fewer than 500 strong, having the ability to tell everyone in the nation what they will and will not get in the way of help from the government, medical care, justice, and opportunity.
Courage and the ability to think of the common good are things that are still out there, but they have been subverted by the brainwashing we have all taken by our government.

We need major funding for the rebuilding of our railroads. The interstate highway system was NEVER intended to be the carrying system for the nation's freight. Someone came up with the idea that loading goods onto the train to ship to terminals and then off-loading and re-loading was "not efficient." The new "thinking" was load it all onto trucks and THEY could go anywhere at good speeds on the new highways. No more railroad yards, no twice-handling of merchadise, no traveling at 15-25 miles per hour through congested areas. Trucks could fly down the road at 80 miles an hour, and deliver the load right to the retailer. Sounds good. Except that all those loading jobs were lost, all the railroad jobs were lost, and the ever-increasing weights on the big trucks beat the highways and bridges to death by forcing them to carry loads they were never designed or built to carry.
The average person must take it upon himself (or herself) to pay more attention and raise their voices until the politicians hear us. It is obscene that fewer than 500 people have the say over the lives and well-being of 300 million.”

“Well said.
However, as I live only a few miles from the 35W bridge, I have been a number of bridges in my area get reworked since then--in particular major arterial bridges in more urban settings. Though I am sure what I have seen is just a drop in the bucket of what needs to be done.”
