Where's the outrage?”

“If your business plan is contingent on the use of illegal labor to survive, you deserve to lose your citizenship and to fail.

This is not about farm labor shortage, this is about a near-slavery labor shortage.

Hire American and pay a good wage. I for one have no sympathy for anyone undercutting US labor with this idioicy.

In context with the population growth, agricultural jobs have been dropping since 2000. The entire reason illegal labor is imported is not to fill jobs, but to depress wages for US Citizens.”

“The US is a sovereign country, we decide who gets in and who stays.

We will have the rule of law. If you don't like it, self deport and take your children with you. You are responsible for them, not the state.”

Klabb on Oct 15, 2013 at 01:44:25

“The US is a sovereign country. But WE don't decide who gets in and who gets to stay; the government decides that.

Sovereign country, sure, you're right. But not a free country, which may be more important. The moment the government abridges my right to private property by dictating who can and cannot stay on my private property, one of my most basic rights are being negated.

If I have to find some other country to live in in order to ensure this most basic of freedoms, well, then will hold the government responsible.”

Stacy Vincent Martin on Oct 16, 2013 at 01:16:57

“Amen. That is how I feel exactly. Very frustrating for immigrants to want to take a piece of their country with them to this location. If you are coming here for freedom, etc., then you need to assimilate with the crowd, not against it, don't try to change the things you don't like. This country was founded on many beliefs. If they don't agree with yours, then leave. Make your homeland the place you want it to be. Not begrudging people making a life here, just irritated that we are expected to accommodate others' ways. Example: school parties no longer called Christmas parties but Winter parties??? Really?”

“Absolutely. However, all data must be put in context and that is what is sorely missing from the analysis these days. The data is "spun" to suit the ego of the spinner.”

Rich Velay on Oct 13, 2013 at 01:17:54

“Indeed.  And even such an idea as "data" in and of itself is losing ground - there is a widespread belief, it seems, that there are ideologically based facts, i.e. your facts and my facts.

In this sort of environment, if I say my facts support this or that contention, then any facts you might use to argue against my conclusions are simply wrong, i.e. they are, by virtue of not agreeing with my facts, therefor not facts at all!  Insane, I know, but.....

When people accept the idea that there can be "Republican facts" and "Democratic facts" then the possibility of communication, let alone debate, is virtually nil.  When you can identify a fact by ideology, you have left reality behind... IMHO, anyway.”

“That would be too hard and since economists are the only course of study which does not have a code of ethics you can pretty much be assured that what ever they say is opinion and not fact.

You are entitled to your own opinions, not your own facts. A widely known fact that is lost on ALL economists.”

capdemocracyisasham on Oct 13, 2013 at 12:51:59

“Economics instruction in America is ideology in its purist form.

It begins with its conclusions and then tautologically proceeds to prove them correct. It is self-referential and circularly reasoned baloney.”

Rich Velay on Oct 12, 2013 at 22:11:15

“Yeah... the manner in which Economics is taught and argued, does not give one much confidence in the validity of their theories or models.  Seems to me to be more of a "Faith" than a science...  ;)

However, that being said, one can try to limit the information one uses to draw conclusions about economic policy to that which is as close to factual and objective as possible.  One can, I think, draw some conclusions about how economics works in practice, based on historical evidence from agreed upon economic indicators... if one really tries.  :)”

Every white voter in the country who is a member of the Democratic party needs to read up on what happened in Travis county during redistricting to know that when it comes right down to it both parties will work hard to deny a white voter who is a Democrat of representation.

“The U3 metric is a measure of optimism, not of unemployment. If you are using the wrong metrics you will never have the data needed to correct the problem. The average length that a person is out of work is 39 weeks. The median is simply the mark that separates the higher values from the lower values. Let's put the median value of 14.3 into perspective, it is triple what it was in June 2006 and double what it was in 2008. Furthermore, in 2010 through 2012 it ranged between 18.6 and 25.8.

None of these numbers indicate a healing economy. How do I believe the books are being cooked. Look at the definitions being used. 4 million US CITIZEN workers are being dropped out of the count to skew the numbers lower.

The data is being manipulated.”

“He's right on the mark. The current U3 number is NOT a representation of unemployment, but rather a representation of employment optimism. If you are looking for work every week, you have a fairly high expectation that there are jobs to be had. Once you get to the realization that the economic machine has been purposefully broken to keep interest rates low at the expense of employed US citizens, your optimism drops and while you may look with the same frequency as before the length of time you are out of work grows no matter what you do until you hit the blackball mark of 27 weeks.

The system is broken starting with the metric used to assess it. Unlike Mr. Hall who believes that the books are not being "cooked", I fully believe that they are.”

MiddleMolly on Jul 19, 2013 at 23:58:59

“The median length of unemployment right now is about 15 weeks. So half of the people who are either laid off, entering the labor force, or re-entering the labor force are finding work before 15 weeks is over.

If you keep looking for work, ONE effort a month, you continue to be counted among the unemployed.

How do you think the books are cooked? Do you think the Census people change some of the answers? Do you think the BLS computers and/or spreadsheets are programmed to just shave a few million people off of the unemployment counts? Who is doing the cooking? (A related question: Do you know how they count people as unemployed? If not, you may want to check this out:
