WE must not get complacent - every single vote is important and anyone thinking of sitting it out because it's "in the bag" and they don't want to bother standing in line for five hours - think again! A mandate requires everybody's participation!”

“This explains the now de-bunked myth that McCain does so well in a "townhall meeting" setting. It is probably the reason the Obama campaign refused McCain's offer for those 10 "townhall meetings" - you have to wonder how much control over the audience McCain's camp was demanding? Makes you wonder..”
MaryanneAZ replied on Oct 09, 2008 at 14:14:29
“Obama's campaign did attempt to set up "town halls" with McCain, but the McCain campaign balked at having audience members who were not pre-screened and using a longer 90 minute format. They thought that Obama's team was just trying to "show up" McCain's age with their request. They never did reach an agreement that both campaigns could live with. McCain tries to make it sound as though he never got any response from the Obama people (another lie).”
Grunty1 replied on Oct 09, 2008 at 13:57:20
“No need to wonder. McCain had two objectives at those town halls:
1) Get people to actually SHOW UP at his events since he can't get crowds alone.
2) Force all lines of questioning into right wing talking points.”

“I've thought that for a long time--the only reason that town hall meeting settings suited McCain was because the attendees were pre-screened. I'm sure that's why he wanted Obama to join him there. Just one town hall meeting in front of an unfriendly crowd and the resulting anti-Obama commercial would be running all day, every day.”

“These are the same tactics used in the Bush campaigns. People had to sign loyalty oaths!!! They scoured the parking lots for any bumper stickers that were not for Bush, and made people leave! One young couple were arrested for wearing anti-Bush tee-shirts. This is how we got into the mess we are in now. Well, that and stupid people who thought he would be fun to drink with. Rove tactics will not work this time. The "genius" got behind a losing team this time, all the dirty tricks in his repertoire will not work for them. “Good post. I'm canvassing this weekend in Portland (for ILWU - Obama) and looking forward to it. I've been carrying registration forms in my purse and badgering people for months about it - they are very tired of me I think, but have found no one (except my sister in Medford and Palin took care of that!) that is pro-McCain. Portland is such a diverse city, despite our reputation for being "liberal" you can find every political persuasion here. It's a shame when people won't even discuss Obama as a choice and the woman who is voting for McCain because Palin is a mother...w ell, that's just intellectual laziness which is at the core of what's wrong with our country.”

“The problem for Palin is not delivering the talking points and one-liners, it's knowing when to STOP! A parrot can be trained to deliver "lines", that same parrot can't be taught how to analyze and respond with an intelligent, cohesive answer. Palin has certainly proved this over the last several weeks.
Maybe I'm not giving the parrot enough credit; a parrot actually might do better than Palin in a debate.”

“Troll much? You sure have your talking points down. And rewind the tape on those "I agree with John..." - listen to the big "But" after each of those statements. McCain has hit a wall the last two weeks and tonight was not exception: McCain is excellent at memorizing talking points (the Repubs answer to real discourse). He is lost when he has to give any real in-depth answers of any substance. The difference between 2008 and 2000? We, the voters have gotten very good at recognizing talking points and have had ENOUGH!”

“McCain did do better than I expected - but my expectations weren't high. Obama came out on top because he showed he is not "ready to lead" but is already a Leader. McCain consistently failed to answer the fundamental question and resorted too often to talking points. Obama had clear, concise answers that proved his ability to both lead and inspire this country back to greatness. My only real disappointment was that when McCain brought up his support of veterans, Obama didn't go after him. McCain has an abysmal record in this area and Obama shouldn't have let him get away with claiming otherwise.”

“Colin Powell has a HUGE weakness: he failed to stand up to Bush/Cheney's lies about Iraq and in fact went before the UN knowing what he was telling them was lies. Colin Powell needs to just stay out of this - which he probably will - he's been very close to coming out for Obama and probably would if he didn't think his own duplicity about Iraq would hurt Obama.”
Despite Media Narrative, Obama Leads By Over 100 Electoral Votes According To Independent Groups
Commented Aug 05, 2008 at 10:09:31 in Politics
“It's very simple: individual state polls tell us who leads the voters in a particular state so who will most likely get those electoral votes. It's not about the polls themselves but the actual electoral votes each state has up for grabs. In the case of a state like Arkansas, where McCain has been substantially ahead in the polls, right now he is being credited with likely winning the 3 electoral votes for that state. Obama, who holds (and has almost since the moment Hillary got out of the race) the lead in Pennsylvannia, will most likely take those 21 electoral votes. And we elect the president by those electoral numbers, not popular vote. So a Gallup poll that says one day Obama is up by a few points and the next day he's not is pretty irrelevant - not to mention they are not polling the cell-phone only voters, of which there are a lot of (me, included). Check out fivethirty eight.com - they look at all the polls and come up with trends and averages which gives us a pretty good idea of where Obama really stands right now.”

“While I think Bayh would be a pretty good choice, I'm thinking Obama's up to something else and Bayh is the "red herring" meant to keep our attention away from his real pick. He feels very strongly about not letting the proverbial "cat out of the bag" and let's not forget the whole Hillary meeting in June where he literally left the media in the dust. He may be preparing a huge surprise for everyone (and no, I'm not talking Hillary as VP-not after Bill's most recent remarks). It wouldn't surprise me if his pick is someone not even on our radar right now. Then again, Bayh wouldn't surprise me either. But I cringe at the "Obama-Bayh" stickers - as in "Bye Obama"....”

“Did you even read this article? Have you looked at the state polls? We don't elect a President by popular vote, but by Electoral Votes and Obama has a sizable lead, one that will be very difficult for McCain to overcome. That's the REAL reason he has gone so negative so early in this campaign. He and his team pay attention to the state polls, even if you don't and they are getting very desperate.”

“I've wondered what the McCain campaign is going to do for an encore during the rest of the election cycle. If they've already trotted out their hate and attack arsenal in July, then what are they going to trot out in October? I think it would be very difficult to keep the same attack lines alive and pertinent over the course of the next three months. American voters tend to have short attention spans and are easily swayed by the next new thing. I just think it is going to be a real uphill battle for the McCain campaign to continue on when they've already shot their load and their message becomes old and meaningless. I admire the Obama campaign because they have remained on message, stayed positive, stuck with the facts, avoided personal attacks and sensationalism. The Obama campaign has been amazing--just like its candidate Barack Obama. That is leadership I can believe in!!!! Obama '08”

“The MSM narrative is wrong only in the sense that a close national poll doesn't tell you much because in states like KY and OK, McCain is pulling away from Obama, which helps McCain in the national polls but doesn't get him more EVs. However, look close at CO, IN, OH, FL, MI, VA, NV, and NM. Obama needs to cut out a path to 270 through a combination of those states... All of those states are very close.”
For Obama, The Latest News Is Not Good

“A voice of reason, finally. I have come to believe the reason we aren't hearing more about the actual EV polling is that the trend is so heavily in Obama's favor, that the MSM won't have anything to talk about. Talking about "close polls" gives a false picture of what is really happening in the individual states and what the true EV polling is at this point, but it makes a BETTER story for the talking heads, etc. For instance, why aren't we hearing anything about PA, where Obama holds a solid lead over McCain in nearly all the polls? Fivethirty eight.com has the current EV poll at 303 to 235 and gives Obama a 66% chance of winning the election. Everyone needs to chill out and remember: WE DO NOT ELECT OUR PRESIDENT BY POPULAR VOTE. National polling numbers are meaningless. Watch the state polls and look at the whole picture. That's why national polls are can be so wrong come election day.”
Clinton Calls For "Cathartic" First-Ballot Nomination

“Actually, according to fivethirty eight.com http://www .fivethirt yeight.com /2008/08/o bama-outpe rforming-k erry-among -nearly.ht mll), Obama is out performing Kerry in every demographic except one. The myth that Obama needs Clinton is over. If we truly want to unite against McCain, we cannot afford to show anything but a fully united convention - one that is 100% behind Obama. This won't happen if Clinton's name is put into nomination - it's like painting a target on our party for the Repubs and then handing them both the gun and the ammunition. Clinton ran a tough campaing and she deserves kudos, but it's time to move on! Which is more important at this juncture: electing a woman or beating McCain? If you look at the numbers on fivethirtyeight (and it IS all about electoral votes, just like it was all about delegates in the primary), Obama has a substantial lead in EV's and he is doing well in - guess where? PA - where many people claimed Obama couldn't "play". Let's get it together and OVERWHELM the R's at our convention - show such unity that they will crawl away into their corners, suck their thumbs, and cry for their mommies!”

“Five Thirty Eight is a pro-O pollster. It doesn't really matter if he's outperfoming Kerry in most demographics. He's under performing by 9 points in the one that counts: Democrats. He's getting 9 percent LESS of the registered dem vote than Kerry. Get it? O is down in every swing state and tied nationally. He would have to be at least 10-12 points up as there is always a 5 point upwards readjustment for the Repubs on election day. In other words, there is no way he can win the general.”

“Exactly. I think the fact that she chose in particular the 1968 election is the most telling part of this entire thing. And you really can't even use 1968 as a valid reference as the primaries were on a completely different calendar back then (I believe they started in March - anyone got the figures?), so there really isn't any comparison. In addition, if she did want to use it as a comparison, why bring up the A word? Why go there? Unless you are either 1) sending a subtle message or 2) subconsciously hoping something terrible will happen to your opponent.”
