Why the Washington Post Was Right to Publish Sarah Palin

Commented Dec 09, 2009 at 22:49:38 in Media

“I moved to London after the re-election of "W"- I am in the states for Christmas visiting family and was able to cancel my parent's subscription to the WaPo. They agreed that the turn toward Murdock journalism and the decline in credibility and quality had gone far enough. Yet another poorly written Op-Ed by Palin (or whomever), a political celebrity instead of someone from either side who could lend more info and insight into the issue is just another example of what has gone wrong.”

“What a wonderful opportunity for his daughters. And Obama acknowledged that. All the children of our presidents have taken advantage of those travel opportunities. God help us when a peace sign is so "controversial"! OMG- which of us are against peace? Oh, never mind...I have an idea..hence the article”

“Yes, it as a wonderful opportunity for his daughters - it's a shame it had to be politicized by many.”

“I'm glad to see that the PEACE SIGN is making a resurgence. I wish everybody would
make it a point to support this young lady by wearing such a T-shirt on Friday.

I wore a PEACE pendant during the 60s, an odd piece of jewelry for a Republican.”

“The Freeper site has been a warehouse for crazy, creepy ,ignoramuses for many years. I am torn as to whether they should be in the spotlight, as rather than feeling chastised for their lack of evolution and literacy, they will simply be delighted for the attention. Their little worlds have surely been turned upside down since the election! They are ugly, hateful and should be monitored as some really appear off kilter, delusional and potentially dangerous. BUt this has been their status quo for many years. Surely they are suffering in their ignorance and inefficacy. Perhaps we should just leave them to their imaginary world on the internet.”

“NO doubt this is just to get more exposure on the national stage and to bail on Alaska because they will soon be feeling the pinch too. Her magic wore off. Maybe she will be satisfied to be some right wing face to extreme right wing causes until she can feel her way back to a national stage as an elected official (her dream)-she will not give up her celebrity-regardless. There is the possibilty of someone brokering a deal as I am certain there are skeletons in her closet still. Has she been on the Appalachian Trail?”

“Aa an American ex-pat in London, my husband and I have used the NHS for 4 years now. Love it. We have seen a doctor the same day every time we have called for an illness (with only one exception, for an allergy issue). The hospitals don't resemble hotel foyers, but the atmosphere is very familiar to me as I grew up in a military family, but the process and paperwork are much less. When we were in the states we watched out deductibles rise, our premiums rise, our benefits fall and medical decisions were being made by boards of for-profit corporations with little input from medical personnel that weren't involved in the management hierarchy. Insurance and HMO lobbyists (and their political beneficiaries) have done such a good job of spreading lies and fear to Americans.”

Samalabear replied on Jun 15, 2009 at 09:10:21

“I go to al-anon meetings that take place in two hospitals, and let me tell you, plush is the word that comes to mind. St. Charles in Port Jefferson is an incredibly beautiful hospital. It is a Catholic Hospital with humble beginnings. It is no longer humble. It is drop-dead gorgeous. Mather isn't far behind and much of Stony Brook University Hospital now looks pretty cushy, too. Why?”

schatsie replied on Jun 15, 2009 at 08:36:40

“That is an interesting comment abut the hospitals looking like hotel foyers... The last time I had a a mammogram, I thought I had walked into the Ritz Carlton and I did not feel good that my taxpayer and health insurance money is going to DECORATING....”

Commented Apr 30, 2009 at 04:37:42 in Politics

“Glendon merely caved under all the pressure of outside groups and to have taken this long to do it seems almost like an orchestrated attempt to further embarrass Fr. Jenkins the president of ND and to diminish the next recipient of the award's honor. Of course she could have taken the opportunity to respectfully address the issue with the object of their disdain just feet away-but to pull out less than 3 weeks before the event and to post her letter first on a religious website before faxing it to Notre Dame has more of the PR smackdown effect.
I do believe she is probably a very good person who feels strongly , but I also believe she became a pawn.”

Michelle Obama's Lost Her Mind! 3 Reasons She's Suddenly A Fashion Disaster

Commented Apr 03, 2009 at 04:47:10 in Style

“The people here in London LOVED Michelle and her style and touching the Queen was not a misstep at all! The Queen initiated it and the when that was made clear, her subjects are elated that Liz could loosen up a bit! MO's style is sometimes hit and miss but it is because she isn't the cookie cutter political wife that apparently some would be more comfortable with. No the world doesn't think we have a conehead for a first lady-they think we have a bright, warm, articulate, young woman for a first lady and they think we are lucky.
Ms. Fuller makes some points about whether some choices Michelle has made are the most flattering for her, but really, sometimes it's about having fun. I'm sure Michelle's choices f J. Crew and young unknown designers has kind of rattled the traditional fashion scene. This review was borderline a little snarky.”

Notre Dame is Right to Welcome Obama

Commented Mar 26, 2009 at 12:52:03 in Politics

“Seriously? After Obama I think the next most popular choices would have been J. Stewart and S. Colbert! Commencement speeches about motivational people who hopefully can offer either humor or prestige for these kids to remember. Being the first Black president isn't enough for you? ND has had many Presidents come-even Bush at the same point in his first term-what had he accomplished?
Kudos for ND-kudos to the administration for hanging firm and the honorary degree is thanks for coming. I will guarantee that not all of the actual graduates who get real degrees would pass the litmus test Obama is being held to (especially since almost 18% of the student population isn't even Catholic)”

huffnpuffn replied on Mar 26, 2009 at 13:25:54

“Is popularity (fame) the key measure Notre Dame should base its commencement speaker invitations on? That would be disappointing. Being the first black president is impressive, but all that says is, again, that the man won a campaign. How much we honor President Obama ought to depend on his record as president. More to the point, how much a Catholic university honors President Obama ought to depend on his record as president. That record is pretty short and achievements are few. Achievements a Catholic university should be honoring are even fewer.”

The mix of ignorance and fear has been a recipe to the GOP successes...maybe the economy will bring folks around around as they usually end up turning back to the Dems when things get too bad, and their prayers and guns aren't paying the mortgage and putting their kids through school...”

“Bullsh!!-this crap about "Biden has to be careful"...hey-if she can't take the heat...! Palin has been able to dish out all the sarcasm and flippant remarks as she goes-let Joe hit her hard with facts and dare her to lapse into her vague pontifications. He needs to expose her for the illusion that she is. I agree he needs to not go overboard time wise and needs to try and be as succinct as possible, but he doesn't need to pander nor pull his punches..
Obama needs to be a little more unequivocal where he can, and needs to get the force back to his voice he had at the convention. I hope they both make McCain and Palin cry like babies-I've had it with worrying about perceptions when their rise in the polls was based on lies and distortions. Let's knock them down with the truth”
