“I think that left as is the health care system would be create another economic catastropy. So, perhaps that is the reason it was tackled now. Wouldn't it have been great if Bush would have had some foresight when dealing with the economy? I am no economist and I knew they had created a housing bubble that would crash. I over a year before the crash that the subprime market was going to cause serious economic problems. Yet, nothing was done because there was no will to do it and many people are just plain greedy.”

“That's the reality that exists for people today who have pre-existing conditions. They might have health insurance but the deductible is so high they can't use it. Others can't afford it in the first place.

So, what is the answer?”

cyoohoos replied on Dec 22, 2009 at 13:03:07

“Why don't we ask Ireland, Portugal, Canada, Israel, etc. They found the answer, it's called CUT OUT THE MIDDLE MAN and get single payer.

Now I'm not naive enough to think that the President could implement single payer this year. However, a public option would have been a strong first step to forcing the insurance companies to spend money on health care and not shareholders and salaries. Without it, we are at the mercy of the insurance companies just like we are at the mercy of the bankers. The government subsidizes them and BEGS them to make sure they spend the money on us. Whether or not they actually decide to spend the money on health care or not is really up to them.”

“I wonder if those who are mandated to purchase will be thankful they did when they get sick. I have lost two brothers to this crappy health care system. One didn't get the test he needed because the insurance company decided 40 years old was too young to get colon cancer (they hedged their bet and he paid with his life). The other worked at a job for 12 yrs and felt he couldn't afford health insurance. He didn't make a lot of money, but decided he was young enough to live without health insurance. He used what little money he had left over for other things, and he paid with his life.

So, I do see this as progress forward. Those can't afford health insurance will get help. Pre-existing conditions will no longer rule out affordable healthcare for many.

I know you are all hung up on the mandates, which may or may not even be in the final bill. But, everyone needs to take some responsibility in this reform and that means if you can afford healthcare you should be buying it.”

Angela Green replied on Dec 22, 2009 at 11:54:28

“What makes you think it will be affordable at all? Especially to those of us with pre existing conditions? This bill is going to take insurance away from those of us who have it now, but can barely afford it. There is nothing in the bill to control premium, co pays or deductables. Telling people they have to buy insurance, but refusing to control costs or coverage is BS. Just because the insurance companies will be forced to provide insurance, does not mean in ANY way that it will be affordable, or will change AT ALL in what it covers. A policy does not = coverage for everything a person needs.”

My life experiences are different from yours. So, I come to my conclusions based on them. Don't discount them and think you somehow know more. I happen to have seen a lot I like from Obama on all fronts. He immediately stopped the gag order which helps women in developing countries get the health care they need. He lead on hate crimes legislation. The economy is turning around. Job loss has slowed dramatically and the economy grew last quarter. I don't know what to say to you. But, I will say that the leader you want doesn't exist, and if that leader did, he/she would never get elected in this political climate. Kucinich tried. Dean tried. Perhaps we will move left, but the reality is the country is closer to the center.”

What a great solution. Let's give health care to poor people and make the middle class pay for it when they are living paycheck to paycheck and getting even less out of the reform bill than the poor are.

What a great gift to the very people who got you elected!”

cyoohoos replied on Dec 22, 2009 at 10:48:35

“Health insurance does not equal health care. You can have health insurance but have a deductible and co pay so high you essentially can't afford treatment even AFTER you pay your premiums.

I don't want to be too hard on the President, but what I see is a large middle tax coming in 2010 to pay for a program that noone will benefit from until four years later. And if the Repubs win in 2012, you can best believe that they will kill the 'reform' while keeping the new tax.”

“What makes you believe that? I hear people from the left complaining that Obama has surrounded himself with those from the Clinton Administration. Yet, you have decided Hillary is the answer to hcr reform. How did that work out for the Clinton's in 1993? That's right. It never even made it to a vote in either the House or the Senate. Do you also believe that Hillary has a magic wand that would make Lieberman, Nelson, and the GOP fall in line?

I think a lot of people thought Obama had some special powers. Now we see that others believe it's Hillary, McCain or even Howard Dean that have special powers.”

The current GOP wants to obstruct and will do anything they can to insure Obama's and Dem's failure. Did you know they actually voted to delay the funding of the troops in an effort to derail hcr? The MSM and HP won't tell you that, but that is the extend they will go.

Read this and tell us again about the great ideas of the GOP.

Is Obama perfect? No. But, he has accomplished more than many give him credit for. He's one year into a four year term. He's had no help from the GOP in Congress who want to obstruct at every turn. He is a president who respects the three branches of government. Would you prefer he govern like Bush and extend the executive powers or would you prefer he govern as the Constitution intended?”

Helping women and young girls in third world countries is the most effective way to forge change. Educating girls decrease birth rates signficantly. Supporting women and creating structures where they get paid for all of the hard work they do (women do much of the work in these countries) elevates their status within their families and their villages. Keep supporting this young girl. That is how these countries are changed. (one woman or girl at a time).

In the meantime keep speaking out about this dispicable law. If it weren't for you and Rachel Maddow I would know nothing about it.”
